Luna laid for awhile, thinking on past mistakes and current affairs. How did Celestia do it? Even though she'd been awake for days on end, it felt like she'd never get caught up. Equestria was at peace, so at least she didn't have an invasion on her hooves... but wouldn't that have been so much easier? She would have had one priority above all else, one thing to do. Instead, she was peppered with tasks that Celestia would normally handle, as she had done for the past thousand years, and even before that. She knew so much better how to run the country. In Luna's case, there were still suspicions that she was responsible for her sister's disappearance. Luna wanted nothing more than to have Celestia back and safe. She cried herself dry, shuddering even as she hugged her damp pillow to herself. She gave a relieved sigh, feeling a bit better despite the current circumstances. She just needed a break, time away to think. But she couldn't shake the fact that she felt alone. Celestia was gone. She'd been with her ever since her return. She was the only one who had been around. All of Luna's past friends were either dead, or seemingly wanted nothing to do with her. She couldn't blame them. Then Ezreal had come along. She had raised him, like a son, or a companion... He almost never left her side. Though Luna was always telling him to go and do something for himself, she was grateful that he was so loyal. She was concerned for his well being, but he seemed in healthy spirits and body. And for some reason, after several years of the same routine, she thought maybe it could last forever. Or at least, for awhile longer. She'd hoped for some warning, at least, that maybe he was moving on to other endeavors. But his time now was no longer hers. He was his own master, really, and could do as he pleased. It just felt... almost wrong for somepony else to be the center of his attention. And now, with the two who mattered most out of the picture, Luna felt alone. ”I'm... all alone.” she said quietly to herself, reinforcing the fact. “Oh Luna. You're never alone.” A sultry voice said. Luna shot up, sitting rigidly on the bed. She looked around, in time to see a shadow past about the room as the torch fire dimmed. She knew that voice. It didn't frighten her, as it once had. But she was wary of the creature it belonged to. “I've always been with you.” Luna could tell that she was smiling, even as she manifested herself in front of Luna and revealed it to be true. But after all, Luna should have known her quite well. “It's not possible. The Elements—“ “Hah! You think some silly Elements could stop me? They may have separated me from your body, but I am not so easily destroyed. Magic is pretty powerful. Especially yours.” The wispy form of Nightmare Moon floated around Luna, giving her chills each time a ghostly entrail came in contact. “What is it you want?” Luna wasn't afraid. The presence of Nightmare Moon made her uneasy, but she knew the dark Alicorn had no power over her anymore. Nightmare Moon faked surprise. “Nothing! Nothing. I'm just here as a friend. Your one and only.” she winked. Nightmare Moon knew Luna quite well too. She'd been born of her loneliness and fear, created as a companion and listener of troubles. Every struggle that Luna had gone through, Nightmare knew. She'd listened when nopony else would. She knew every weak point, every way to push Luna's buttons. She knew what she hated, what she feared, what she wanted. That was part of what made her so powerful. She knew exactly how to get under her skin. It was practically her purpose. Luna just gave an irritated sigh. Though she may not have feared Nightmare, such an entity was hardly easy to get rid of. Especially one that could withstand such power as the Elements of Harmony. It was twice that the Elements had attempted to vanquish her. Apparently the second hadn't worked either. “Oh, come on Luna. Don't be like that.” Nightmare pouted. She came to rest on the bed beside Luna, her misty underside growing legs so she appeared more normal and had the appearance of being more solid. Though when Luna looked at her, she could see right through her. Her image bobbed and waved, floating along like Luna's astral hair. Luna just laid there and thought, her face contorting as she explored a range of emotions. She couldn't really be angry with Nightmare, since she was really just a manifestation of herself. Although she had gotten quite out of control and caused her a heap of trouble leading up to now. But, since her 'creation', it was true that she had been a companion for many months. It was odd... to love and resent her at the same time. If she were to call Nightmare evil, Luna would have to fairly call herself evil. Nightmare was just a piece of herself. “Why are you here?” Luna prodded again. “Well, it seems that once again, all your friends have abandoned you.” she grinned wickedly. “What about it?” Luna's reply was short and curt. “At least you don't deny it.” Nightmare continued to smile. Luna grimaced. She knew she was letting Nightmare get the best of her. But right now, she didn't care. She felt alone and abandoned, and any abuse Nightmare wanted to throw at her was probably deserved. She already felt bad about herself. Why did it matter if Nightmare wanted to add insult to injury? “But... I guess there's no beating around the bush.” Nightmare laughed lightly. “Why don't we... try again?” She knew Luna would get the hint. “What?” Luna whispered, giving her a curious look. “You have no friends. No ties to anypony. And with Celestia gone, there's nopony around powerful enough to challenge you.” She was making sense. She knew that Luna was smart. Being logical was a good way to get into her head. “She'll be back any time, you know.” Luna pointed out. She knew that Nightmare was right... Now would be a good time. But... she'd left that mistake behind her. Or at least, she'd tried to. Everypony still remembered and feared her for it. Clearing her name was not an easy task. And if she couldn't make things any better for herself, why did it matter if she made them worse? “So? Solidify your rule now, before she returns!” Oh yes, Nightmare was doing a fantastic job planting the idea in Luna's mind. “And then what? Be defeated again?” Luna's questions were tactical, but Nightmare was prepared. Nightmare simply laughed at the question. “You of all ponies should know that you're more powerful than she is. Even without me, you could defeat her. Isn't that right, Element of Magic?” They say that flattery will get you everywhere, but that's especially true if what you're saying is true. And to Luna, Nightmare was making all the sense in the world. If nopony was going to care for her, she wouldn't care about anypony. “What about the Elements?” Whether or not she was going to go through with anything, Luna wanted to cover all bases for any holes. Whatever happened, at least she would be aware of who or what could overpower her... and what she had power over. “They're locked up, here in Canterlot Castle. Celestia knows how to open the chamber where they're stored, but the wielders themselves are all scattered across Equestria anyway. So good luck getting them together in a timely fashion. That's even assuming Celestia will be conscious enough after a battle with you to summon them and unlock the Elements.” Luna looked uncertain, but Nightmare could see that the wheels were turning in her head. She was considering... and that was all the in that she needed. “And, assuming they'll do any good. I'm still here, aren't I?” she grinned at Luna. “And you know Celestia won't be able to harness them unless the previous holders are dead. And there's no way she'd be able to do that to her little “faithful student.” Not for all of Equestria.” Luna simply cleared her throat, still considering things. Why did she want this? Was it to cause ponies pain? Was it simply for her own pleasure? Was it to spite Celestia? Was it for revenge on everyone who had let her down? Was it merely a blow at Ezreal? Or was it still just a cry for attention, a longing to be appreciated? Who was to say it wasn't just a combination of everything? Nightmare Moon leaned in close to whisper in Luna's ear. “What have you got to lose?” So far as Luna was concerned, everypony had abandoned her. She had no friends, nopony to confide or find comfort in. It was the same as always. She was either overshadow by her sister, or ignored because her duties were seen as not very important. After all, Celestia had taken on the sky for a thousand years. What purpose did Luna serve? “A sister.” she replied bluntly. “Oh come on!” She'd been so close! “Where has she been all this time? Equestria and the surrounding lands have been peaceful for weeks. You've had scores of guards searching for her far and wide. Maybe she abandoned her post, or is off cowering somewhere and—” “She'd never do that!” Luna stood up adamantly. Ah. A reaction. “Right. You don't think she could use a break after a thousand years? You know how you're feeling right now? She's felt like that for a millennium. And right now, regardless of where she is, it's not here. YOU'RE in charge now.” Somehow, it all made sense. It all felt right. Celestia wasn't around for now... So what was wrong with doing things her own way? With Celestia out of the way and the Elements locked up, everything could go off without a hitch. And when Celestia returned... well, that was a bridge to be crossed when the time came. She harbored little ill-will toward her sister, but she was a bit put out that she wasn't here to take care of Equestria. But, since she was the sole ruler now... “Alright.” she breathed. A sly smile spread itself across Nightmare Moon's face. “That's a good girl.” She moved to float above Luna's body, pressing her aura against the princess. “Wait.” Luna said calmly. Inwardly, she felt almost giddy. She was in charge now. She was the ruler of Equestria. And unlike the first time, there was nopony to stand in her way. Nightmare paused, not wanting to get ahead of herself and deter Luna. Not when they were so close. “I call the shots. You boast of my power, so know this: You can't control me. I'm letting you in so I can use your power. I can just as easily get rid of you. I know now that the Elements, with their current holders, will purify me of you. If I can't manage to get rid of you, I do know who can. I'M in charge.” she was firm, bold, and calm. Her mind was as clear as it could be given her lack of sleep and food. Nightmare had been the push, but Luna was willing on her own. “Well, well. Somepony is confident.” Nightmare said, amused. “I guess I don't have much choice but to take back seat if I want in on this, don't I?” “I could always force you to cooperate.” Luna was the one to smile slyly now. “Not necessary.” Nightmare replied. And with that, she assimilated herself with Luna, and the two became one. Luna could feel the extra power within her, but she could also feel her own strength. Yes, she was definitely stronger now. Unlike last time, when Nightmare Moon had had a hold on her, things were reversed. Perhaps a bit of the Elements had infused themselves with Luna during the transformation. In any case, she felt great. Though it should have been nearly dawn, the moon was still low in the sky. Instead of lowering it, as would normally happen, Luna silently raised it until it was in the middle of the sky, visible by all of Equestria. She smiled to herself, on a bit of a power trip. What could go wrong this time? Nightmare had made excellent points, which Luna had been unable to debunk. Maybe she really would end up getting it right the second time. Luna took a deep breath, soaking in the smells and sounds of the night. She let it go, imagining the new world that she was going to rule over. One of eternal night. Everypony would have to learn to live with it. Either that, or they would all die out. Did it really matter to her? After all, they hadn't shown her much appreciation. What did she owe them? It wouldn't take long for everypony to notice. They'd wake up at what they thought should be dawn, to discover stars still littering the sky. At least she wasn't leaving them entirely in the dark. The moon was actually quite bright. But oh, wasn't this unexpected? Well, it shouldn't have been, with the way everypony treated it. They thought she was still Nightmare Moon? They thought she'd go back to her old ways? Fine. If that was what they thought of her, maybe that was the pony she would be. Luna laid down on her balcony, making herself comfortable. It wouldn't be long before Canterlot and Equestria were thrown into chaos. They had just gotten relief from the eclipse, but now things were going to be worse. Luna had been suffering. Now everypony else would too. Yes. Equestria would be hers within the hour. Edited by Princess Luna, Aug 10 2012, 09:52 AM.
