I have very special eyes...
|
That single day, Utopia felt way depressed than usual. So, before she had left somewhere, she issued Steel a single order... No, a request: to watch over Love Ling. As for her? She needed some time by herself... And thus, went to the tower that was once the source of her worst fear, then later was the source of her bliss as she learned of her sister... And now... Brought her nostalgic memories... She came to the exact war room where she had spoken to Morpho and was introduced to the hivemind. This changeling's eyes watered as she still managed to reimagine the whole moment, her promise, her learning... She closed her eyes and said "Sis...", to no one but herself... But was a guest listening to her? |

There weren't many who would venture into the Oatawa Tower, particularly in the perpetual obscurity and increasing chill that now covered all of Equestria as the moon stood her vigil for the seventh day. This alone perked the Tower owner's interest as he followed the intruder's progress through the Tower. Dusk Breeze knew who she was of course, which added to his curiosity, she hadn't been to this place since he'd been first crowned. She finally reached what had once been used as a war room, and paused, reminiscing about something perhaps? Dusk Breeze was not anywhere near, being far away in an undistinguished at the top of the Tower, but the hive carried his succinct message to the Queenling below. "Why are you here?" |

This voice broke Utopia's trance, causing the image she had in her mind to disperse. "Ah! Uh? Dusk Breeze, is that you, right? Ah... Worry not, it's just me..." her eyes wandered for a bit and she completed her phrase "Utopia, Dream Reaper, whichever you choose me to call. M-May I go there? Considering I've come because-" from that point on, only reading her mind would tell what she came for: Memories. The sweet memories she had of the short minutes she spent with her sister, learning of her own kind. |

"Meet me in person." Shrugging off the unpleasantness of the hive mind, Dusk Breeze settled to wait. Utopia would find her way, of that he no doubt. Perhaps her visit could be taken advantage of, instead of simply being a intrusion to be tolerated. Her desire was what he wished to part with, an exchange that would benefit both parties. Perhaps he would bestow more as well, more than just fragments of the past. It wasn't something his kind was ever meant to bare. Though initially unnoticeable after the shock, it proved to be ever more costly with time, and by now it was a possesion he would gladly relinquish to another. |

"Right!" she replied to none actually, as those words came out of her mouth. Utopia eventually found her way there, although she had seeked some guidance from the others. Once there, she stopped upon sighting him, Dusk Breeze. She took her time looking at him for a few seconds before approaching at a slow pace. "Dusk Breeze... I... I... I don't know what to say. You must have been through a lot, I know about that all... What I mean is... I'm here for you." she had difficult to speak directly. It was a touchy subject of what they had lost once... |

"Presumptuous of you to assume I need anything," Dusk Breeze spoke aloud, lighting a candle from among its sisters that dotted the circular room. He stood among a hoard of books. Novels, references to various fields (most related to some form of magic), and papers with various notes and glyphs all littered the room, having claimed almost the entire floor. Standing tall, a few candles, some lit and others spent, provided a soft light. More than they should have, in fact. The door to this room had remained closed for some time, and this anomaly was just one of the toys Dusk Breeze had created for his amusement, or more truthfully, for his distraction. "Perhaps I'm being closed minded though," he admitted, stacking some books to make way for the interloper. "Perhaps a warm fire, or blanket. The weather's been unkind of late... Pardon, I digress. You wish something I have or can provide. Or believe I have or could provide." A slight untruth, an exchange could be possible, but the Alicorn was still apprising the value of his ware. Or rather, its cost... |

"Dusk, I..." Utopia lacked words. Should she just say it either way and risk openning a wound? Should she wait for him to guess that before they push any further on this subject? Soon or later it would return... ... She did not know. "Dusk, I... I want you to come to Ponyville.", and she finally found her way around, "I mean: you must be feeling very lonely here, and perhaps seeing some familiar faces could be good for you.". It was then when a crazy thought came to her: "Maybe, just maybe, he likes being here because it is where he spent good times with sis?". |

"But hundreds are a simple thought away, how could I possibly be lonely?" His tone was jovial, yet his expression apathetic. Papers and sheets fluttered as they were corralled into unsorted collections, a select few stowed away into the pockets of the Alicorn's robes. More honestly, he spoke again, "What could be of interest in Ponyville? I've no relatives nor contacts there, and the whispers I hear tell me nothing of interest has transpired. Besides, the road south is unpassable, the weather team was unable to handle the recent falls." He could have cleared it himself, spells to displace snow were known by all in Oatawa and the exertion would not have been impossible for him, but there had been no need. The denizens of the town were accustomed to harsh winters, and isolation during the worst of it was not uncommon. Airships occasionally ventured this far north in such times, but a persistant howling northern wind, unpleasent to Pegesi but not incapacitating, had kept them away. |

"It's sis, right? You stay here because this whole place reminds you of her, right?" Utopia finally went straight to the point "She was so kind to me... She didn't force me into choices or anything... But I never had enough time with her.". Her tone was rather sad, however... "But, I will live on believing sis and mom will come back someday. And I will do my best to make this world better for us. And I know you will too. I'm sure you have a good heart and sis entrusted you this future as well. But for now, let's just live. ... Say, ever been to where I was raised?" |

Dusk Breeze became as still as the marble of the Tower, his face an expressionless mask of wrought iron. The only motion was that of the candles as they flickered and danced. "No," he finally uttered. "I am not here because I wish to remember your sister," each word carefully and deliberately enunciated. "I am here because it is the single place were I do not belong the least." A step, and another, he walked towards her, slowly eliminating the gap between them, heedless of books or papers in his path. "Your sister is dead, the only way she lives on is in the aberrations she created, such as this one. Believing otherwise is a delusion. She was not kind, she was ruthless. She did not entrust this future to me, she forced it upon me. She plucked a stud for his breeding qualities, and played with him as one would with a toy. Took it apart when she wasn't satisfied with it and put it back together. Twisted body and emotions, spoke sweet lies, to make her puppet dance, and finally abandoned it to complete her labours in her place, regardless of it was meant to be capable." He stopped, a half a meter spanning 'tween the two, observing the Queenling intently, gauging her reactions and keeping his own in check. "Haven't slept. Haven't felt tired or hungry. Haven't ate. Whispers are always there, just out of earshoot yet audible. It's as if there is always something taking up the back of your mind, pushing at your own thoughts. You're never alone, despite not a soul being within a hundred paces of you. It's infuriating in a sense. Perhaps your kind are used to it, but 'tisn't natural for my own. The puppet wasn't meant for this, before nor after it was reassembled." |

Utopia felt happy inside, to see him snap... But on the other side, she looked... Sad?! She rested her head against him. "You have always a place to return to... You always have someone to return to... Whether you believe or not sis loved you, that is up to how you prefer to look... Whether or not you believe she will return, that is your choice in belief... If you feel the burden is too much for you... I don't think sis would want to see you suffer. If you want sleep, I can give you. If you want a place to get back to, I can give you. What I do not want... Is any kind of suffering... Please, Dusky, be true to me: does it hurt?" |

'twas a mistake, Dusk Breeze had never enjoyed the proximity of others, even before the pivotal venture into the Everfree. A fact strengthened by experiances since. "I am capable of providing my own delusions." A step back, her sudden gesture denied. His face was no longer blank, but that of one who'd been condescendingly offered assitance. "If you truely wished to eased my burdens you could have done so sooner. You knew the weight of them; 'till recently you could have asked anything of the Mind concerning me, and you would have known." Dusk Breeze opened his mouth again, as if to continue his tirade, but words seemed to fail him, slipping past his mind's grasp. For several long seconds he considered the repercussions of what he desired to impulsively do; considered if he had the right to force a duty upon, despite the same having been done to him; considered if Utopia could be trusted to uphold what little he had accomplished. In the end, it was clear. The task given to him was not one he could undertake, some aspects were simply beyond his abilities to accomplish. "Forgive me." 'twas all he said. Without fanfare, ceremony, or forewarning, the Alicorn lifted the circlet of silver from his brow, freeing his horn from its confines for the first time since it had been bestowed upon him by the King of Fear. |

Utopia looked to him and turned into Dream Reaper, the nature she had accepted the very minute she was born. "Dusk Breeze... You should... You should keep that. Even if you don't wear it ever again, keep it, treasure it. I don't know what brought you to think sis was just using you, but it's not true, she loved you, I know she really did, more than she loved me! You must keep that proof of love, and remember of her, but never suffer with those memories. Dusk Breeze, I-" she closed her eyes and looked away a bit. She then brought her eyes back to him and said "I'm a weakling, I'm not capable of bearing such heavy burden of my own... I should have died the same moment sis did, that way I wouldn't be causing more pain to you. I... I'll make my leave...". She slowly walked toward the door with that. |

Withdrawing from the room, wrapped 'bout with her own lie, Utopia fled. More than that: Abandoned. The Queen of Fear watched as his only hope for relief, the one who could have born his burden, leave him to bare the weight of the Hive alone. He watched as she vanished from the gateway, leaving the door ajar to the outer world. Candles leapt wildly about, tossed upon the faint wind that wound its way up the tower through the open doorway. One by one, they flickered and expired; a testiment to the blizzard that raged outside. For a time, Dusk Breeze stood in the darkness and simply listened to the sighs of the Northern Wind. Somehow it felt as if it called to him, the creeping chill brought upon its whims no longer quite as unpleasent as before. Then, inexplicably (even to himself), the Alicorn stowed his crown within a volumeless pocket of his robe and left the room, and departed for the central stairwell of the Tower. ----------------------------- Flurry groaned in boredom. Her father had promised months ago to begin teaching her to fly when she'd reach her tenth birthday, but the weather had conspired to keep her cloistered within the two story house that was home to her family. From the main floor Flurry could hear her younger sister giggle and laughter as she played with their mother, and groaned again, rolling her eyes at the injustice of it all. Her sister would find her special talent before she would! 'twasn't fair that her sister could practice magic all day indoors, and she was trapped in this tiny house! She wasn't even allowed to practice gliding from the top of the stairs after that incident with the lamp! Looking out the attic window, an expression of great longing upon her features, she watched as the howling northern winds lifted the heavy snowfall into mesmerizing patterns illuminated by the many lights from the homes of Oatawa. She was about to turn away and head to bed when she spotted a new light in the distance, a sharp blue contrasting against the warm oranges and yellows from the hearthfires and lamps. Intrigued, she pressed her face against the freezing glass in an effort to get a better look. ----------------------------- The wind tore at his mane, coat, and robes, whiping them about without relent or mercy. The snowfall was blinding in it's intensity, and the cold left him numb to the bone. He forced his spell, spending it in a burst to reveal the edge of the tower despite the obscuring snow, and approached the edge. It was ironic, considering what he intended, that above all he felt alive, more alive than he had in weeks perhaps even months. ----------------------------- The light flared, and Flurry saw the outline of the mysterious tower that had sprouted from the earth, the equally mysterious light emanating from the top, revealing the sheets of snow as the wind twisted them about in a spire 'bout the marble structure. She was about to call her sister to come see the spectacle, when the light suddenly faded away. Disappointed, she remained glued to the window despite it's chill, hoping to catch a glimps of the beautiful light again. ----------------------------- 'twas odd. It seemed so simple to just step beyond the rim of the tower, to plunge into the darkness below, yet Dusk Breeze could not bring himself to do so. All he could do is remain rooted at the precipice, unable to take that final step, yet unwilling to back away. For several minutes he held at the brink, 'till a sudden gale did what his conviction could not, sending him tumbling over into the dark. He didn't know if he screamed. If he did, the winds carried it away... ----------------------------- The young white pegasus frowned in disappointment, and was about to pull away in defeat, when the light reappeared, outlining a dark shape tumbling down the tower in the night, snow twirling about it like a shield. Her eyes grew wider as she tracked its decent, her breath held as it fell. She was on the verge of crying out when the shape suddenly picked up, narrowly avoiding the ground beneath, and soared across the roofs of the town, snow flurried 'bout in its wake. She lost sight of it as it passed overhead, and although she was forced to bed by her father, she did not sleep 'till hours afterwards. The filly knew she'd witnessed something special, something important, though what precisely she did not know. ----------------------------- That night the blizzard broke, and a strong, but warm, southern wind replaced it, clearing the skies for Luna's charge to shine through...
