Raize shook his head, spitting disgusting sand from his mouth and trying to figure out why he had such a splitting headache.
Was it alcohol again? The last incident Raize had with some alcoholic beverages left him nearly bleeding to death in a gutter, so he doubted that was it. Something about a job, grabbing a ring, was that it? Probably. All Raize knew was that this was the first shipwreck he'd ever suffered, and he would really like not to experience another one if at all possible.

Trying to stand, though struggling because of the damp sand, the thief managed to inch off the beach floor long enough to get a good look up, beyond the beach and onto the lovely green landscape ruined by that massive god-damned castle. Honestly, what was with the Monarchy always wanting to build these massive structures that were never really made fully use of. Anyway, Raize recognised that this particular castle was none other than Canterlot Palace, which resided in Equestria. Home of-

Wait a minute. Equestria? Raize had never read a map, but he reckoned that was one hell of a way to drift. As usual when shenanigans of this nature popped up, Raize suspected someone was messing with his luck. Perhaps it was just superstition, but it was the only explanation he could think of. Surely the Marecian's near legendary luck would not abandon him so quickly? No, Raize decided that this was one of those things that kind of had to happen.

Feeling his strength returning, Raize shook himself off, deciding that more thinking was no what this situation required. Eyeing a cliff nearby, he did pretty much the closest equivalent to cracking his knuckles, and proceeded to taken the much easier sloping pathway up to the top. I mean, really, why climb a mountain when you don't have to? Really, he isn't even sure why we paid attention to it. Perhaps some small detail might be important later on, but he really didn't care. The slightly less sandy thief just wanted to get to Canterlot as quickly as possible.

As Raize made his way towards the city, a golden object gleamed in the sand, though of course he did not see it. The object was surprisingly large, made of what looked like gold, but was undoubtedly much, much harder. And on top of the ring, glowing triumphantly, was a jewel most beautiful.
It watched...and it waited.

Nothing could quite have prepared Raize for Canterlot. It's very easy to say that if you've seen one city you've seen them all, and you might actually be correct if you were talking about Marecia. But Equestria was one completely different kettle of fish. Everything was just so colourful and outspoken, even the walls seemed to seep this kind of attitude. Back in Marecia, everything was much more refined, reserved and respectable in Raize's opinion, but perhaps the city would grow on him. After all, if the place wasn't as reserved as Marecia, maybe the mares would be looser too...no, bad Raize, no thinking about that kind of thing. Plenty of time for that later.

First things first, Raize followed the network of (thankfully) illustrated signs towards the general marketplace area. It was all well and good being in this new place and admiring all the differences in culture, but without money he wasn't going to get anywhere fast. Perhaps it would be best to ask someone where to exchange bits for whatever the hell the currency was around here. Rainbows and happy thoughts, perhaps. Eurgh.

"Oh for the love of--!"

Wishing Star latched a hoof onto Fireflare's mouth mere seconds before she started befouling the air. "Sorry, sir, you'll have to forgive her. She's due quite soon, you see."

"Right," the salespony said casually. "Who's the father?"

"I am."

"...I'm sorry, I thought you were a mare."

"I am."

The salespony blinked.

Wishing Star sighed. "Transgender pins. And yes, they sell them alongside dildos, so you know--"

"RIGHT about this, how about I give you a five percent discount?" The salespony grinned nervously. "There you go!"

He took the bits and waved as Wishing Star rolled her eyes and plucked the groceries up with magic. The two mares wandered away from the stand.

"What was that all about?" Fireflare grumbled. "I wasn't doing anything wrong."

"Trust me, hon, if I'd let you go off you would have been arrested for disturbing the peace. I know how much shit can come out of that mouth." The unicorn licked her lips. "It's an exotic taste, but I don't think other ponies would have appreciated it."

"...why do you always have to be right?" the pegasus whined. "Can't I be right once in a while?"

"Well, yes, when it comes to beating things up. And moving furniture."

Raize blinked in surprise, eyeing the coins these two strange mares were using. Gold from the looks, and...oh. They're bits. Raize almost facehoofed himself, but at least he'd not gone ahead and asked them where he could exchange his bits. Still, the thief though he might grab the opportunity to ask them a couple of slightly less important questions while introducing himself.

"Hello there, lovely looking mares. I'm afraid I'm new around these parts and I'd like to ask you a question or two, if I may."
Raize thought about it carefully. What were the two things that he really needed to do first?
"Do you happen to know where I might purchase some dapper attire and also where I might be able to post a letter?"
Raize had no intention of actually paying for the clothing, but it wouldn't do to say that to these ponies. They might not react too well.

Fireflare facehooved. "Oh shit, it's another Shiloh. I don't want to deal with this..."

"Hon, be nice." Wishing Star shoved her wife gently, turning to the strangely feminine stallion. "Sorry about that. She's just in the Whine About Everything stage of pregnancy, she'll be better once she pops the foal out... and, um, you do kinda look like a pony we knew."

"Disgusting stallion," Fireflare muttered. "Couldn't think of anything but himself, wanted us to be his personal hoofmaidens..." She shook her head and sighed. "Sorry. Bad memories, pregnancy issues... You didn't deserve me snapping at you like that. Anyway, post office is down that street, third left, then keep going till you hit the Pagasopolis Memorial. Then you head right, should have a letter on the sign hanging over the door. As for dapper attire, you're on your own."

"Oh come on, the clothing market is right over there Flare!" Wishing Star rolled her eyes. "Just because you don't have any sense of fashion doesn't mean you can claim ignorance, you work in the furniture store right next door."

"Well yeah, but I think sending a thief in there wouldn't net us many brownie points."

"What, a thief? How's this guy a thief?"

"He was looking at our bits before he came up to us. And he didn't ask us for them. So he's not a begger." Fireflare shrugged. "You learn these things in Manehattan."

"As I recall, you used to steal a few things," Star pointed out.

"I was a foal! I had no money! I stopped stealing after I got a college education!" Fireflare waved her hoof at Raize. "This... He doesn't even look desperate, so I can't let him steal if I can help it."

Raize considered cursing under his breath, but decided against it. This Fireflare may be streetwise, but as far as Raize was concerned pregnant mares were easy to manipulate, if you knew how.
"That's quite the accusation to make, Miss Fireflare. If you go around accusing ponies of being thieves on some petty reason, you may just find yourself...missing something."
Raize decided to leave it there. Given that this was a marketplace, best not to be too threatening.
"In any case, even if I were a thief, I have more than enough bits on my person to purchase clothing and still have some leftover. So if you hear of some thievery in the clothing store, then I assure you it wasn't me."
Raize started walking in the direction of the post office. Deciding that he was far enough away, Raize couldn't resist saying one more thing.
"...because I would never get caught."

Fireflare rolled her eyes. "Yeah yeah, threaten the unborn foal. That's so stereotypical it's not even funny. The last pony to do that we dumped into the Everfree. Then beat him up. Then got him arrested by the kaiser. I was right, this guy's totally another Shiloh..."

Wishing Star gave her wife a look. "You... took that rather casually."

"I'm tired, that's all."

Raize almost started to retort, but thought better of it. What did it matter that these ponies thought that he was only out for himself? Chances were the thief would never bump into them again in such a large city, and perhaps they had a point. Raize had never really found anyone he cared about more than himself, with the lovers in his past being nothing more than a tainted memory for the most part.

Trying to keep away from that little problem area, Raize cantered down to the post office, eager to get his first task done since arriving in Equestria. He couldn't read or write, of course, but higher agents of the Thief King were given stamps that could be used as a sort of distress beacon, to show where they had ended up. Despite having little more than his bits and hat left on him after the shipwreck, Raize had managed to keep the stamp safe by stashing it in the secret pouch he kept concealed in his hats.

Raize shook himself out of his stupour as he made his way to the post office. The first thing he noticed was the sheer scale of the thing; it was easily ten times bigger than the ones back home! The thief reckoned that it was perhaps a mail hub of sorts, where most of the mail had to go through before being sent off. Striding in with his usual confidence, Raize trotted up to the customer desk which was, strangely, deserted. An ancient looking mare stood behind a counter, trying her hardest to stay awake.

"Ewuh...wha? You want something sonny? Sendin' a letter?" The mare idly handed him an envelope, pulling out a large musty looking book from under the counter.
"Where's it goin' anyway?"
"Marecia. Doesn't matter about the other address lines, as long as it gets there."
The mare seemed to break out of her half slumber at this odd instruction.
"That's the kind of talk that gets mail lost. You sure about that?"
"Positive."

With a swift action, Raize inserted the 'letter' into the envelope. It was essentially just a slip of paper with the stamp's crossed dagger emblem and a Canterlot postcard Raize had filched earlier in it. Confident that things would go as planned, Raize handed the envelope over the counter along with the handling fees. Raize may have been a thief, but there were some things you just had to pay for. Mail was one of them.

Turning to leave, Raize was stopped by a figure in front of him. This wouldn't have been strange on its own, but the thief's ears were sharp from years of training, and this...thing was looking directly at him. If Raize was a more superstitious sort, he would have called it a ghost, but the thief was convinced that they didn't exist. Trying not to make a fool of himself, Raize switched to his 'polite mode'.

"Yes? Is there something I can help you with?"

The figure nodded, drawing something thin and stretched looking from...somewhere, and handing it to Raize. Before he had time to react, or wonder why he couldn't quite descibe the appearance of the entity, it had disappeared as quickly as it had come. Curious, Raize opened what looked to be some sort of hastily scrawled note. Oh, they were clever. They knew the thief couldn't read, so they hadn't used pictures. A clear, soothing female voice read out the letter, though no one around Raize seemed to react.

"Raize Korona...beating the odds once again. Your letter won't reach the one you call the Thief King, not that it matters. You are on your own, and you must find the ring. It's the reason you're alive...and the reason you should be dead. You should have died thirty years ago Raize...never give up."
The letter deteriorated in his hoofs, leaving a confused Raize with nothing but his thoughts for comfort.
