Cobalt turned her head to look at the male, frowning softly. She had made no presumption of him in the first place. Personally, messing with the weather was something she thought just shouldn't happen. Not that Cobalt was a complete tree hugger, weather just had a way in flowing how it was supposed to work. Without being changed or manipulated, sure that could mean droughts to the lands that the Earth ponies used to grow food... But it was a natural progress of life. Perhaps all these strange events were in part such messing with the environment. "Leave the weather, snow is a little comforting.." Cobalt spoke softly, extending her neck out to catch a snowflake on her nostril, "Besides, I think it is beautiful." Sure, Cobalt knew snow was just a little more than random crystallization of water and dirt in the clouds. The white of it just felt so pure, like a new slate was being laid out. A slate for her to change as she wished. It was cold, but nothing came without a little pain. It wasn't worth it without the pain. Turning to the left, she started into a nicer district of Manehatten. She could see the awning of her building complex, just another few moments now. |

“Comforting for you. You don't have to worry about your feathers freezing,” Cosmo sulked. This one of the main reasons he had moved in to his store, and only left to purchase more rations. The cold, especially snow and ice, was hell on his feathers. With all that surface area for water to melt and freeze upon, his wings would grow very heavy and very cold. The threat of frostbite was very real, and a pegasus without wings was like a unicorn without a horn. He shuddered at the thought, and proceeded to flap his wings rapidly, simultaneously trying to shake the snow from his feathers, and to increase the rate of blood flow. He was oblivious to the fact he might be shaking the snow on to others, or creating gusts of chilling wind from his incessant flapping. His teeth were now loudly chattering as his jaw was now in spasms to keep warm. His whole body shook, and he began to wish he owned warmer clothing, especially the kind tailored for pegasi. These everypony mild autumn rags weren't cutting it. “How much further?” he'd ask. His words coming out more whiny than intended. He was trying, in some small degree, to maintain a measure of dignity, but he was never the most disciplined pony. Edited by JIntegrity, Sep 18 2012, 11:56 AM.

"Well, if you changed the weather, it wouldn't be a problem." Cobalt said coyly. Turning again to give him a soft grin. He by far wasn't seeming the adventurous type, far too whiny. A little unprepared for the weather, but that could just be a misconstrued by a lacking observation. It was maybe judging a little too quickly, but so far it wasn't looking so great. She could at least feed the pony for his trouble. If she didn't end up freezing it place before she got there. Her new winged companion was starting to send all the snow, and coldness her way. Something she just shook her dappled coat to. "Please, stop your huffing we have arrived." She stopped underneath a read, and blue stripped awning. The pony outside the building gave a soft nod, and barely looked over the pony coming in with the mare. She pushed herself through the door, putting a leg out to stop it from closing on the stallion. The cobbled floor had been covered with black mats to prevent the snow from soaking the floor. Inside the building was warm, and comfortable. Cobalt now started to look somewhat out of place. The building was pretty fancily decorated, and seemed more of a hotel than apartment complexes. Pictures decorated the walls, little plants sitting in vases on little tables. |

As Cosmo walked in, the heat would cause his glasses to fog up. “Celestia's droppings.” He'd mutter under his breath. He'd stand there for a minute, dripping heavily upon the black mat beneath him, until the fogginess faded, and he could see clearly once more. As his fanciful settings came in to view, he'd let out a whistle. To him the settings looked like a place of high-class society, or lower end nobility. He'd gulp silently, and would say, with his bravest face, “Well... if I knew I was in the company of such a high-class lady, I'd have shown a tad bit more etiquette. My apologies ma'am.” Cosmo was not being in the least bit facetious. He had spent far too much of his life playing out the interactions between the higher and lower social classes in the games he played, and was honestly afraid he might have treated his mysterious employer in a manner below her station. His face would go red with a blush, and he'd look at his hooves in discomfort. He'd begin to tap the mat beneath him with a hoof as his anxiety grew, and he'd begin to feel out-of-place, ashamed, for being here. He was wearing a coat suited for autumn that was in little better than tatters. Though he was by no means a substandard member of society, he suddenly felt unworthy. He'd turn back and look to Cobalt meekly, as if asking “are you sure?”. His discomfort was evident, and, for the first time since you met him, he looked unsure. |

"Ma'am makes me sound old." Disdain apparent. A soft snort given as well, she was uncomfortable with him coming up with that sort of observation. With everything strange going on lately, it was sadly easy for Cobalt to find herself some bits. Lots of bits, as her line of work was now something everypony was starting to need. Besides, no pony just ever started to not get sick. Alchemy was a good field of work, if one was working for bits. Sure insane hours, and expectations for a pony but it was a good life. Not everypony got to live in doing their talent. Cobalt's turning out expressively better in terms of living a financially relaxed life. A little help from her pony doctor parents helped too. She had a fine education, the best Manehatten could offer her. "Come, no need to be timid now. I wish to be inside, and get rid of this chemical hazard of a work outfit." Probably not the most safe sounding sentence for a pony to make but it was true all the same. Cobalt clomped down the hallway, and hung another left. Only seeming to nod at the pony's that passed, all posh looking at that. Poshy looking males, if he was watching closely enough. At her door, three room down she quickly hoofed in the code and walked into her abode. Brown being the main color of the back drop. |

Cosmo's head hung low as he followed Cobalt. He noted the way she nodded to everypony she passed, and how they nodded in return. He noted their finery, the way they walked, confidently, without worry or care, and, most of all, he noted the way their eyebrows raised at the sight of him. The way some ponies would raise their hooves before smiling faces, soft chuckles, and whispers into the ears of their companions. He heard the way they laughed as they were further down the hall. His tail began to sink between his legs. By the time she had hoofed in her code and walked in to the adobe, he began to feel as if he were a tiny pony in a large space, and the weight of it seems to crush him from all sides. The splendor of her room did little to make him feel at ease, and he stood as close to the door as possible without placing his dock against the door. “Nice... um... place, ya got here.” His words would barely come out strong enough to be heard, and his eyes would begin to water in fear. |

Until he sees the mess. An amusing thought. It opened up to reveal a pretty wide open space, kitchen to the right. Brown granite, and cherry wood furnishings, the floor also cherry. The bar of the kitchen opened into a living room, that was still wooded. A simple square table sat and was left bare. A fireplace behind that, with a few blanket littered around it, books piled a safe distance from the fire as well. To the left was a circular stair way leading up to her bed room, the canopy of the bed was the only part sticking out. The walls were left bare, and but for the few things mentioned, it almost looked vacant. Two doors under the stairwell were shut. A bathroom, then her lab. "So come in so I may shut the door." Until he would of looked near the kitchen sink. It was filled with tubes, and unwashed dishes. A few wrappers, compared to how blank the abode was... it was horribly messy; "So what does a pegasi eat?" She asked causally, depositing her work clothes in a bin also near the door. For now Cobalt had yet to notice his watering eyes, or any of what he was feeling. Whenever Cosmo had moved enough to close the door, or did it himself she stalked off to the kitchen. |

Cosmo would walk in and close the door behind him. Hearing Cobalt's question, he'd reply, “Anything you'd eat, I suppose. Carrots, wheat, sugar and milk heated until steaming with some apple slices thrown in was an old favorite of mine, before the war and eternal night.” Thinking of the old days was somehow relaxing. Perhaps it was because, in those days, he could have seen himself in a place such as this. Then, something clicked in his head. Perhaps it was because he was talking about the old days, perhaps it was because he was beginning to realize his luck was turning around, his hopes were coming to life, or maybe he was just pushing his luck for the sake of his own amusement, but he'd continue his statement with, “Maybe some amaretto and cola.” His mind, however, would continue the joke. 'cause, you know, we'll be seeing a lot of each other, so we should get to know each other better. Dinner and liquor, always a good way to start a date, you're a cute little mare, and with a studly stallion like me... He'd bust out laughing at the ridiculousness of his own mind. He was beaming now, his fears subsided, and his inhibitions subdued for the time being. He'd follow her in to the kitchen, only to see its current state. “Wow, it looks like a laboratory just threw up in here.” Before she had an opportunity to yell at him, he'd add, “Not too unlike the playgroup I used to hang out with. We weren't as productive, classy, or mares, but the mess was about the same.” For some reason, seeing the mess made him feel better. She wasn't so different from him. She just had the fortune of having something that was relevant even after all that is happened. Not like him, where no one cares about games in a world where it can be a struggle just to survive. |

"A laboratory did throw up in here, it is what I do." Speaking and smiling softly at the stallion. "At least if wasn't a lavatory, that would be something to explain." Grinning a little to herself, it wasn't terribly funny so Cobalt didn't want to be caught giggling at her attempts at being funny. "Ahh, liquor so soon? But I am out, but have some cola sitting around. Cherry, but I pray it will do." She also wanted no pony to see how poor she could yet hold alcohol, it was a rare occasion to indulge. Well, rare not to work in the morning. The dappled mare was a very busy pony. Cobalt swept through her inventory of goods, and gathering up all that was needed for his tastes. It wasn't something she had eaten herself, so more questions would need to be asked about how to make this. Sure sugar and milk together was fine... apples made sense. But the mare could easily be wrong. "So do I add everything together or separately? I wouldn't want to butcher one of your favourite childhood meals." The mare then moved to pull a pan out of a cupboard, the stove already started up behind me. With a pot in mouth she looked to Cosmo again, awaiting an answer. |

Cosmo would begin to instruct how to make the dish as best as he could, seeing as how he had never made it himself. “You'd put milk in the pot, get it to boiling, add the wheat and sugar while you diced the carrots and apples as small as you can without losing the taste. Oh, make sure you add a lot of wheat, otherwise there isn't enough to soak up the milk, and it comes out all wrong. Anyway, once the wheat has soaked up enough milk, add the carrots and apples, turn the heat off, and wait for it to cool. It can be a tad sweet, and lacks any sort of greens, but is satisfying all the same. As for the drink, don't worry about the cola. I only drink cola with liquor. Otherwise, it is milk or juice for me. I do try to be healthy.” He'd turn back to the mess of dishes cluttered around the sink, “If I weren't afraid I'd break something, or something might touch my skin and have me glow in the dark or something crazy, I'd do some of these dishes for you... as payment for making me food, of course.” She looks good while she cooks... Cosmo would clear his throat and look away blushing, hoping she didn't notice. He could tell it had been too long since he'd been around a mare. At least a couple months now. Man, did time fly. Either way, he'd have to be careful, this pony was thinking about employing him, and the last thing he needed was to mess it up by trying to act like some kind of ladykiller. He'd never even had a girlfriend, and this labpony probably wasn't interested. I don't even know her, for Celestia's sake! I swear, between my helpless romantic tendencies and libido, who needs enemies with friends like these? Edited by JIntegrity, Sep 18 2012, 07:40 PM.

"Fair enough." Placing the pot over the stove. Pouring in the milk, now she wanted to cheat and add the wheat now she didn't. This time she would be patient. It really wouldn't make a big difference, but she had to act responsible. Cooking was like most of her lab work anyways, measuring some of this, putting some of that in. It was all quiet logical, and put into a nice order. It made it more fun, thought her talent didn't extend to good cooking... She liked to pretend that it made it taste better. When she ever felt like cooking for herself. "Oh the dangerous ones I dispose of. I rarely leave anything dangerous just lying around." One example, a nice quarter sized hole at the base of her faucet it had been obviously patched over. But it had left a nice little indent. "Besides, we are discussing our business adventure. So what are your thoughts? Terms? Questions?" Blue eyes now focusing again on the male.Tail swishing softly behind her, without fear of hitting the stove as she moved. Most everything about her was devoted to work. Short hair, bangs just long enough to cover the broken base of her horn. Since she was already using milk in the mixture, she was going to find a juice. But kept watching the male, it honestly helped the easily distracted mare pay attention. "And what sort of juice? Grape, cherry, cranberry?" |

“Cranberry.” He'd reply. “Um... my shop, is there any way we can make sure no one damages it if we decide to travel? Is there a chance for some sort of 'downpayment' sort of thing so I can get some equipment before we go? Wait! Are we going somewhere? I thought I was just going to be some sort of lab assistant. Not that I mind, traveling with a mare... I mean, traveling with you wouldn't be so bad... I...” He bit his tongue. He hoped that he was just overreacting, and that didn't sound as bad as it did to him. Nonetheless, he was going to keep his mouth shut, and answer only what he was asked. No more rambling! It had got him in enough trouble today. He suddenly wondered if they were going to get the carrots and apples diced in time, but didn't say anything for fear he had said too much already. He then realized that he probably seemed like some sort of emotional roller coaster. While he wasn't normally this bad, he hadn't really been around another pony in months, so his normally temperamental disposition had become magnified during that time. It seemed like she hadn't noticed, but all the same... |

"Yes, yes. I can give you one. That wouldn't be an issue. As for your shop, if anything happens I will pay for it. But I doubt too much would happen. Or hope so, nopony knows anymore" She bumped the wheat into the softly boiling milk, Cobalt didn't even need to look at the mixture. The sound of boiling was very easy to recognize. Watching the mixture, she decided it would be enough wheat to soak up the milk that was still on its way to a complete boil. Now it was the time for pointy things!!! Very pointy objects. "How long do you need to gather things? I would like to leave as soon as possible." But before the pointy, she had to add the sugar. Which she easily did, guess but assumed it would be enough. With a quick glance she looked to Cosmo again, it was a slightly prying look that asked if she had added enough. Whether she did or not, it continued. She looked at the knife, and looked to just be thinking at it really hard. But nothing had happened, with a soft sigh she picked it up herself. It was easier this way, more accurate... Or that is what she told herself. It was also quick work, carrot and apples. Small cubes, but yet not small enough to lose all of the state. Each piece was perfect it had to be. "I was thinking Canterlot maybe, to see what others are doing. Trying out some field work." Stallions, Stallions, Stallions. |

Would stop trying to avoid looking at her after hearing her discuss her intentions, “Canterlot? Why Canterlot? It attached to a giant mountain. Not exactly fields there. Hell, you'd have better luck in Ponyville. Regardless, I'll go with you, and it would only be long enough to get a good thermal pegasus suit, a field pack, enough rations to last about a month, and some writing material. Also, why the rush? Unlike me, you seem to be doing well here. I mean, I only thought about adventuring because it would provide some good research, and with the way things are I thought that the need for adventurers would go up as people got desperate. Instead, everyone just runs to the soup kitchens.” That last sentence was spoken as it he had to spit it from his mouth like a bad taste. His eyes would narrow, and he'd continue his train of thought. “I've not taken a single meal from a soup kitchen. I've sold nearly all my possessions, but I have not been to a soup kitchen, nor will I. If there is one thing you should know, it is that I won't accept charity. I won't let someone tell me that I only earned what I did because it was given to me. Yeah, my life isn't exactly the most glamorous, but I can at-least walk with pride!” He'd hold his tongue, yet again. He was letting his emotions run rampant this evening. It wasn't like him. He was normally slow to trust, yet tonight it was all he could do to keep from having this mare throw him back to the life he had just an hour before, waiting for someone to show up. However, now that there was a chance his life could finally begin to move forward, he was desperate not to let his mouth ruin it. |

"Because I'm not helping here." She would interject, before he had started on the second part of his rant. "Canterlot has more to go after, I mean people there that are researching as well. Also it is a safe enough place to start going out to, to gauge the temperature of what is going on out there. I just feel that is were we should start, I have a colleague that I also know there. On the brink of something." Speaking about something completely unrelated to what he was speaking of, the mare didn't have an inkling of what she should say to him. So, he was proud... and as expected most ponies had ran to charity rather than doing anything about their problems. That was pony kind, easily scared. "Well, you don't need to resort to pride. I'm not providing the most gallant of adventures, but what I do helps too. I'm not trying to sit in this corner. Manehatten has grown too much of a place to run and cower. I need to do more..." But to avoid anything with pesky emotions, she dumped the carrots and apples into the bowl. Flipping the stove off, she felt finished but putting out something for the ponies to eat on. Putting her hooves on the counter she reached for the cupboard door, that part was easy. Cobalt stretched out as much as she could, not being able to reach the only plates in the cupboards. Plates quite up there for the small-ish 'earth'- pony. |
