Waking up in the morning, oh man. Definitely one of the new experiences that would need some getting used to. When you've been stuck in a ring for all of your life, never actually needing sleep as such, the rest itself was more than welcome...so much so, that Minerva wasn't too big on getting up.
Look, just open your eyes. You might be able to sleep all day, but I'm getting pretty bored in here.

Sighing, the mare's eyes lazily flickered to the on position, absorbing the environment around her. The dingy, backwater, badly painted and dirty inn room. Not the prettiest sight.
You know well enough why we can't be in a nice hotel room. Because of you. If you hadn't 'misplaced' my letter in the post, we might not have been chased by the Thieve's Guild goons.
"Gimme a break bro. How was I to know that I would end up in your body instead of killing ya? I'll get up when I feel like it, 'kay?"

Eh, Minerva was just messing with him. Time was wasting, and being stuck in a piece of antique jewellery had made the mare put a premium on the stuff. With nary a further thought, Minerva chucked Raize's hat on the bed, sprinting downstairs and out the door as fast as the thief's legs could carry her. Even in the somewhat lower class areas of Canterlot, the air smelled so fresh and clear...Minerva knew that she would tire of it eventually, but she wanted to enjoy the feeling while it lasted.

What're you planning to do today, anyway?
"I'mma look for Nightfall. Just 'cause he ain't givin' me control of 'is body like you are, doesn't mean he can get away with givin' me a helpin' hoof."
You don't know where he lives any more than I do. You don't even know where anything is in Canterlot!
"Oh, shut it mouthy. I bet I'll bump into him wanderin' 'round. Actually, better idea!"
No no, don't do that. It will only end in-
"Nightfall! Get your flank over here right now!"

After the… rather unsettling flying incident he’d been in last night, Nightfall had decided to pay a small clinic in Canterlot a visit before leaving for Ponyville, only to learn he had a rather badly sprained foreleg. As such, he limped slightly as he made his move through the city towards the train station, happy to leave the noise and activity he’d been putting up with behind for some peace back home. Even in the relatively quiet morning, the unicorn’s head was throbbing with pain.

It could be worse – in fact, I’m probably pretty lucky I survived the crash. he thought quite happily to himself. A nice peaceful warm drink at home - maybe with a nice relaxing book on dimensions. He'd been meaning to get round to it, but he just hadn't found the time in his busy schedule of studying. Maybe with a few jam sandwiches; it wasn’t too much to ask for, right?

As if to answer that very rhetorical question, a rather flimsy looking unicorn in his peripheral vision started to scream his name, demanding his attendance. At first, he began to actually trot towards the shout grudgingly, before realizing there was something off about the voice. Oh, wait, that was… Oh. Oh no.

No… please, anypony but her… even one of those massive earth ponies with the cheesy lines who want to kill me…

The bookworm turned around and trotted away with all the swiftness of a unicorn with a very painful leg injury. He didn't quite feel like risking teleporting into a wall, because of a lousy headache, to get away was quite worth it, though.

"What? He's...running away?! The little blighter!"
Given that you just bellowed his name, expecting him to just skip over and do what you say, I'm not terribly surprised.
"He can't run fast with his injury. I bet it wouldn't be too 'ard for me to catch 'im!"
Why don't you follow him home? The way he is now, I reckon he would teleport away before you could catch him. If you find out where he lives, you can jump him later and do...I don't know, whatever the hell you were planning to do with him.

What ensued was a display of sneaking that was more akin to a blind mammoth than a pony. After bumbling after the bookworm for nary a minute, he seemed to don nothing but increase his pace.
Look, just...stop. Simply because you've seen me shadowing, doesn't mean you can pull it of yourself.
"I'm not handing you the reins! Tuesday is my day!"
I promise you that I'll relinquish control after some slightly more skilled sleuthing, because the way you're going at it right now, I'm surprised he hasn't teleported out already!

Shrugging discontentedly, Minerva shifted places with her brother, letting him steer the ship for the first time that day. With a crack of his neck and a little shake, the wily thief went in the opposite direction, hopefully making Nightfall think they'd given up. After that, he cut around the side of the nearest building, watching the bookworm's movements from the dark alley.

Now that someone a little more competent was on hoof, it wasn't long before Raize discovered where Nightfall was headed; the Canterlot Train Station. Setting his pace at a calm and confident walk, the thief entered the confines of the station, hastily glancing around. It was rather crowded with ponies, presumably on their morning commute to their work places. However, the thief managed to pick out the bookworm without too much trouble, seeing him having a chat with a moustached ticket attendant. After making sure Nightfall had passed, Raize put on his swagger and strolled up to the moustached earth pony.

"Excuse me, would you mind telling me where that unicorn you were just talking to was headed? He's an old friend of mine, and I'd really like to catch up to him so we can have a nice chat."
Satisfied with the thief's smooth lie, the stallion scratched his chin.
"Why, he was headed for Ponyville, if I remember correctly. Would you like a ticket, sir?"
Raize rustled about, chucking the contents of a coin purse he'd stolen earlier at the attendant.
"I imagine this will suffice. I know it's a bit much, but I would like you to keep my visit on the down low. Anypony asks, I wasn't here."

The stallion mumbled a reply that might have been "Okay" as the thief took his ticket, glancing at the ornate writing. Meaningless.
It says Ponyville, Platform One, leaves in two minutes. You really need to learn how to read, doofus.
Ignoring her comment and silently thanking Minerva, Raize trundled his way over to the nearby train, going for the back carriage. Since the front carriages almost always had nicer seats in Marecian trains at least, Raize surmised that it would be unlikely for Nightfall to look in the back first, with his injury and all.

The final carriage was a simple little place, with very bare seats, most ponies preferring to stand rather than suffer on those little sitting implements of doom. Not being quite as picky as his fellow passengers, Raize decided to try his luck on one of the seats, handing the reins back over to Minerva.
You're up, sis. Just...don't go looking for Nightfall on the train. It can only end badly.
"I might if I get bored. I guess we'll see how I- Ooo."
Minerva was mesmerised by the scenery outside. Now that the train had finally set off, all sorts of greenery, animals and other spectacles were passing by. Perhaps it would be alright after all.

Nightfall felt confused as the thief began to very, very obviously tail him, and simply got closer and closer to the train station; he doubted that Raize had any money left, anyway. Well, that and his pursuer seemed to vanish a moment later. Maybe he had lost him? Regardless, his experience on the Canterlot train system led him to sit at the front, and he prepared to enjoy the fairly quiet and uneventful ride – with the beautiful scenery visible from the carriage as an added bonus – back to Ponyville. A little relaxation couldn’t hurt…

“Neeext stop – Ponyville!” was heard from the amplifying crystal in the carriage, waking Nightfall from his slumber with a jolt. He quickly wiped a small bit of drool away with his hoof before anypony could notice. The bookworm’s thoughts were still quite hazy as pulled himself to his hooves, but he managed to haul himself out of the carriage, blushing nervously from the weird looks other passengers gave him as he finally stumbled off the train.

A quick glance in his saddlebags revealed that the few bits left over from buying the ticket had been taken; not that it was a problem. The rest of his money he brought with him was safe in a pocket dimension. It didn’t stop him from groaning though.

“I hate thieves…” he muttered loudly to himself, limping out of the fairly rustic station. Huh. They'd taken the doors off recently... Nightfall hastily glanced around to see if anypony was watching before trying to charge up a simple teleport spell, his pendant sending little blue sparks everywhere. These spells were much easier to do when you knew the area well, and right now, the bookworm just wanted to go home.

Minerva...Minerva!
"Neeext stop - Ponyville!"
Sis, you heard the announcement. It's time to get off the train.
"...but I don't wanna!"
If you don't, Nightfall is going to get away.

Remembering with a shiver why she was on the damned entrancing locomotive, Minerva happily skipped off the train, happy to have seen such lovely sights on the way to Ponyville. She couldn't see Nightfall around anywhere, but since Ponyville was hardly a rolling metropolis it shouldn't be too difficult to find him.
I hope you realise that you've never been here before, and as such have no idea where anything is.
"Oh, shut it. The bugger'll be around 'ere somewhere...just gotta find the right place to look."

Unfortunately for Minerva, an impatient pony and unfamiliar terrain mix about as well as oil and water, and as such it didn't take more than a few minutes for the frustration to surface.
"Argh! Celestia on a stick, how can this place have so many houses, yet 'ardly any bloomin' signs?!"
May I suggest...asking someone? There are a few ponies wandering around, after all. If you ask them nicely, they might even give you a hoof.

Minerva had a quick look around, scanning for a likely mark. She appeared to be at some form of crossroads in the town, with four buildings diagonally each side of her. Given the lack of signs outside, the mare guessed that they were probably small houses. There didn't seem to be much more than an exit from Ponyville following the forward path, and going back seemed to lead into a park of some sort. How she had managed to make her way to this seclude without going through the park was anyone's guess. Spotting an elderly unicorn sitting on a park bench, the spritely mare bounced over to him, watching as he lifted his top hat.

"Why hello there...miss? Lovely day, is it not?"
"What are you talking about, old pony? The clouds are so grey that it looks like rain'll be here in a couple of minutes!"
The wizened unicorn seemed amused by Minerva's observation.
"Right you are, I suppose. Now, I suppose you didn't just come over here to chat to an old pony, hm? What is it you need?"

Just try and be nice, Min. You can't get info by shouting at someone all the time.
"Uh...could you please...tell me where Nightfall lives. Um, please."
The niceties rolled off the mare's tongue like bricks, but the elder didn't seem to mind.
"Nightfall? Ah yes, I believe I know the one. Young unicorn, purple blue mane, white-ish coat?"
Not wanting to rely on the questionable quality of her polite conversation, Minerva merely nodded in response.
"Mmhm. Just over there, my good mare. Tell him Walter said hi, would you?"

Minerva followed where the elder had pointed, coming to one of the nicer looking houses. Being reminded by Raize to thank the pony, the spritely mare swivelled around only to find that he had vanished, perhaps teleported. Before she had time to think about this too much, the rain started pouring down buckets and she wasn't too happy about getting her mane wet...or Raize's for that matter. Jumping straight up to the doorway, Minerva knocked politely, a little more subdued than usual. The encounter with the old pony had put her in a peculiar mood.

Nightfall sighed contentedly in the entrance to his rather rural but cosy home. It was a simple house with nothing but a bedroom on the upper floor, accessible from a staircase that went over an ornate arch-like hallway which led to a small kitchen. The rest of the house was simply one massive room; two sofas faced a low coffee table (complete with a full mug of cold neglected coffee), horizontal to a large magical hearth that the bookworm had just lit, casting the room with a gentle orange glow. On the opposite side of the room, a massive bookcase that touched the high ceiling dominated the entire wall. The final noteworthy feature was a small desk with a simple chair was in the empty corner across from the stairwell, about a metre out from the bookcase. The unicorn looked longingly at the open book and the wide variety of strange glowing magical implements set out neatly on the desk.

With a small flex of his magic, Nightfall levitated the coffee mug and heated it to the point where the dark black liquid began to bubble.

Knock, knock.

Resisting a witty reply of “Who’s there?”, the oblivious bookworm took himself and his coffee towards the door and source of the gentle knocking. It was probably the post-mare. She always seemed to have something for him – even when he was fairly sure he hadn’t ordered anything anyway. He flung the door open, revealing his slightly bloodshot eyes and unkempt mane to the visitor. That also included his superheated mug of coffee.

Unsurprisingly, he was not met by the young mare – but rather someone he was much, much less comfortable with seeing.

“O-ohh… hey,” he said shyly, shrinking back a little out of fear of punishment for running away. “I-it’s nice of you to drop by… how did you know where I lived?”

Oh crap, time for this 'lying' lark Raize was so good at. Hm...
"I was just...passing through. And uh, someone pointed your house out to me so I thought I'd say hi?"
Oh dear.
Feeling that one of her first attempts at lying had fell face first into the mud, Minerva tried to think of something else to occupy Nightfall's attention. No, no, couldn't see past him too well and...oh for Celestia's sake, that mane!
"Sun have mercy, what have you done to your mane, Nightfall? It's all tangled and stuff! Come on, let's go and sort it out."

Without further ado, Minerva barged right into Nightfall's house, grabbing the tea the now bowled over Nightfall had dropped and put it on a side table. She proceeded to drag the tired unicorn upstairs, because in Raize's memory the bed seemed to always be upstairs, and dragged Nightfall into his bedroom.
"Sit...please."

While her voice was certainly commanding, it wasn't quite the selfish harshness it was before, more that of a mother telling her child what to do so he doesn't mess everything up. Before Nightfall could think about getting away, Minerva levitated a brush and comb from the side, weaving them this way and that in a surprisingly expert fashion.
How the hell do you know hairdressing, but not lying?

However, Raize's incredulous comment fell on deaf ears as the mare was rather engrossed in her current task. When the bookworm tried to speak off, Minerva responded with a 'shh', very softly, as if soothing a foal to sleep. A few minutes later, the job was done, and Nightfall's mane was looking rather splendid.
"Sorry about that, Nighty, but that mane really did need some controlling. What do you think?"
Her voice actually sounded quite unsure. It seemed her usual brash confidence had peeled away for the moment, an event which was really quite rare.

“H-hey! W-wait a sec!” Nightfall cried as the other unicorn shoved him before he could sarcastically comment on the obvious lie, sending him rolling halfway across the room.

The next thing he knew, he was being pulled towards his stairs – he grabbed the floor in desperation, reaching out for the steaming mug that had been set back down on the table. The back of his head hit each of the steps on the way up with a loud bump. At one of these knocks to the head, his mind suddenly came back to the present and the panic started to set in. “W-wait, what’re you doing?!” he said fearfully as Minerva forcefully dragged him towards his bedroom.

The heat in Nightfall’s cheeks grew as he obediently sat down in his room (as if he could argue with that tone), the dark pink colour conflicting completely with the whites of his coat; luckily, this feeling dissipated as he felt the comb running through his mane. He let out a sigh of relief. After she was finished with his tangled mess of a mane, he conjured a small mirror that gave off a trademark emerald green glow in front of his muzzle, gazing towards it with awe. The mass of hair on his head no longer looked remotely like a nest.

“It’s… r-really well done,” he said softly, being careful to sound sincere as to not hurt the pony standing next to him expectantly. She sounded so worried he wouldn’t like it – what was up with that, anyway? He pulled himself up on his hooves with a little more energy than he had showed earlier. Then Nightfall realized once again where exactly they were, and his blush returned in full force, leaving the silence hanging in the air for a little while after the mirror vanished. He turned around to find Minerva’s green eyes.

“A-a-anyways!" he suddenly exclaimed, "uhm, d-do you... uh, want a cup of t-tea or something?” the bookworm asked with a hopeful tone, moving his head suggestively in the direction of the doorway. He had completely failed to hide his nerves.

Minerva was very happy that he liked the mane, though she wasn't really sure why. While she had been engrossed in her work, the small room had not bothered her, but now that she had time to think, it made her nervous. Perhaps that was why Nightfall was jittering too? Though that didn't explain the blushing...ah well. Being a proper Marecian, the hairdressing mare could not deny a good cup of tea.

"I'd love a cup of tea, thank you! Then perhaps you could tell me a little about Ponyville...it's really small in here, isn't it? Let's go downstairs."
While heading to the larger room she had glimpsed downstairs, Minerva shot a questioning thought at Raize.
The blushing? Oh yeah, that was hilarious! No way I'm going to let him forget that anytime soon!
But why was he blushing?
Think about it for a second. What do ponies normally do in bedrooms together? Here's a hint; it rhymes with sex.

By this time, the two unicorns had made their way into the...living room? Minerva thought it best to reassure Nightfall before he went off to make tea.
"Um...I'm sorry I dragged you upstairs, and I apologise if it made you uncomfortable. I guess I'm not used to this kind of stuff."

“O-oh. No, it’s alright. I’m fine with it,” he tried to say casually, heading into the claustrophobic hallway that led to the kitchen.

Once inside, he quickly filled a small iron kettle using a tap, throwing it onto a modest stove. He searched for the jar of tea leaves – as he opened the top, a small spring mechanism fired a wad of jam into in his face. Nightfall muttered something about Summer under his breath and wiped off the small red outline of his head that was now on the wall, as well as his face, with a wet cloth. Well, at least none had got on his mane. That was always pretty good. Resuming the tea-making, he threw some tea leaves into the teapot and poured the boiling water in. That gave him a little time.

“Hey, Minerva!” he suddenly yelled down the hallway. “Do you have any sugar?”

What was she up to in there, anyway?

Wow, you've really mellowed out. Where'd cranky Minerva go? Is she not into hairdressing?
Oh, shut it. I just don't want to make Nighty hate me any more than he already does.
Hate you? Nah, I don't think it's that. If he did, he probably would've booted you out of the house already. I think he's just having trouble getting used to you. You're not the most stable pony in the world, after all.
Minerva angrily swung her right hoof at her head, gasping as the unfamiliar sensation of pain coursed through her veins.
"Ouch!"
You're only hurting yourself, doofus.

Minerva flinched as Nightfall asked if she wanted any sugar. What the hell should she say? She'd never had tea before.
Try one sugar, it's what I have. Chances are good that, since we share taste buds, you'll like your tea the same as mine.
"Um...one sugar!"
Please.
"...please."
Jeez, hammering manners into you is like pulling teeth. Just try and keep a level head while talking to Nightfall, I'm not sure he quite gets your mood swings yet.
Minerva huffed, annoyed, patiently waiting for her tea. This magical liquid better be worth it!

Nightfall was pleasantly surprised to hear Minerva actually say “please”; that unicorn was the last pony he would expect to actually display some manners. He poured the now dark liquid into the two unusually large cups, telekinetically throwing a lone sugar cube into each. He sighed slightly, and picking up the saucers they were sat on, the bookworm carried the glorious drink into the main room, placing one on each side of the small table. He took his place on one of the sofas. The unicorn wasn't really sure exactly why the green-eyed pony had chosen to come to his home still, which made him a little bit anxious - not enough so to not notice how relaxing the plush seat he was in was.

He felt wonderful now; there really was nothing like sitting in your home in front of a lit fire with a cup of tea in your telekinetic hold.

“So, anyway, what’d you… want to talk about?” he asked gently as he took his first sip of tea, looking curiously at Minerva.

((I feel like someone filled my skull completely with cotton, but I don't wanna keep you waiting.))

Saucers? Minerva had to admit that this was rather fancy for her tastes. What was wrong with just giving the tea over in a mug, was that so hard? She uneasily levitated the saucer down onto the table, sipping the liquid with surprising grace. It was just as good as Raize's memories told her...guess she really was a Marecian. Now, what to talk about?

Let me think...why don't you ask him about Ponyville? You know next to nothing about this place, so maybe it would be a good idea to get some intel, you know. In case we ever come back.
"Can you tell me about Ponyville? I've just arrived here, and I don't really know anyone. Except maybe..."
That old pony, Walter. You've met him.
"Oh yeah, there was this old geezer outside, said his name was Walter. You know him?"
You're slipping...
Shut up, Raize! What do I care about politeness? I'll just say what I mean. Works for me.
Hmph. Fine.
"Also, know anyone 'round here who knows a lot about grammar and stuff? I'm crap at teachin', and Raize needs to learn to read."
Uh...thanks?
Forget about it.

((I can wait until you're feeling better, Aera. The thread isn't going to sprout legs and walk away. I'd just prefer you PM me with such info next time. ;) ))

Nightfall took another sip of his tea, savouring the flavour slowly as he was bombarded with questions by Minerva. She probably didn’t have the hang of the whole conversation thing yet – something he could bare with for the time being. The bookworm simply took another long sip of his drink before looking back at the other unicorn. He moved into a more comfortable pose on the sofa as he thought about what he’d been asked.

“Oh… uh, Walter… Yeah! I know him,” he started, giving Minerva an annoyed look. “He’s a nice old guy. Think he said he used to be in the Royal Guard, but he retired a few years ago and moved to Ponyville; came around as soon as I moved in myself and helped me with a few things.” Come to think of it, he stilled owed that pony a favour.

At the next question, the bookworm couldn’t help but laugh. “Pfffft. Raize can’t read? That’s rich… well, uh, I taught myself to read a long time ago and… the only school around is Ponyville Elementary. For you know - the little foals. I think I know a teacher who retired from there as well. Cherry Tree or something? I’m not sure where she lives right now though.” He took another sip from the still steaming cup of tea, looking extremely content on the sofa. He stared at his hoof as he continued. “Ponyville’s a really nice place, though. It’s just hard to find your way around. The ponies here are great, and it’s nice and quiet at night still.”

((I'm fairly sure Nightfall didn't yet know Raize couldn't read, but correct me if I'm wrong.))

You can just forget about the reading thing, Min. I've survived long enough without it already, and-
Shut it! If you think you're getting away with me reading everything for you, then you've got another thing coming!
"School'll not be too good then. Lemme think...are there any authors or somethin' around here? If there are, I bet one of them might at least be able to teach my brother the basics."
You're making quite the logical leap there. Just because they can write, doesn't mean they can teach.
You got any better ideas, smartass?
Yeah, I do. Why don't we just go back up to Canterlot? I bet they'd have someone up there who could teach me, since you're so dead set on it.
Canterlot ain't safe anymore, you know that as much as anyone. The Guild won't think to look in some rag tag village in the middle of nowhere for a thief like you.
Let's just wait for Nightfall's reply first. Okay?
Fine.
