Over Drive is a sports manga. Which sport is it about? I bet you'll surprised that its about cycling. Specially since with the title Over Drive you were most likely thinking cars or maybe fighting.

The main character is Shinozaki Mikoto. He's your typical I suck at everything known to man shonen protagonist. Think Tsunayoshi from Reborn or Closer from Hyde and Closer. Except Mikoto is a bit less rational. Oh and he starts the first chapter being a gopher for some hoodlums like Sena from Eyeshield 21.

The reason why I say he's a bit less rational is due to the fact that Mikoto only joins the cycling club because the girl he likes asked him to. The girl is called Fukuzawa and she only asked Mikoto because her brother Yousuke told her he would give he a certain amount of money based on the rankings of people she recruits for the club. There's also this total bs speech about how cycling doesn't require someone to be athletic but for them to just have a big heart.

Oh before proceeding, it seems Mikoto has some kind of special ability which is touched upon once in the first chapter when he is painting Fukuzawa.

After that speech, Mikoto runs off after saying that he doesn't know how to ride a bike. Which is technically the truth since when he was young he was hit by a car while riding a bike. He was sent to the hospital and completely repressed not only the accident but also how to ride a bike. This little twist however is not at all based in reality as unless he only learned how to ride a bike on that day he would not have repressed that knowledge as well. Proof that he did not only just learn to ride a bike on that day is given when his mother recalls that Mikoto was the fastest on a bike in that area.

Anyway moving on. Mikoto has one kinda friend/rival. He doesn't start off as a rival though. He only become one when Mikoto realizes that Yamato (I think that's his name but I'm too lazy to check) is a cyclist as well. A rather good one at that too. Yamato is pretty much the most badass character in the series. Only somewhat ruined when we hear him tell his little sister that the reason he can't run fast is because he's been cycling for so long that all muscle not required to cycling have died.

There are two other member of the cycling club other than Mikoto. There are Yousuke, an uncrowned emperor (that's his nickname since he has never won a big race but he's the best around. No one's ever gonna take him down.) and Terao, who despite being a guy is like the team mother. In fact the author goes out of its way to make them look like Yousuke and Terao are into each other.

Now since the scanlations haven't gotten very far I'll be cutting this review a little short. The last thing I can tell you is that right now there is this big race going on with this Superstar Hyoudou who isn't particularly interesting and we don't know much about him anyway.

This manga isn't terrible. It's average really. It would be much better if Mikoto joining the cycling club made a little more sense and if the author made the action that does take place a little more dramatic or interesting for more than a page.

C+C please. Tell me how to make my reviews better.
