In no way am i a Fundamentalist. I dont believe you should live your entire life the way a book says... I am living my life the way I want to. I can still believe in God, Jesus, religion and all that without being a fundamentalist.

I respect that Muller. Now this is what I think happened, I'm not basing this on anything just my opinion.

Well the "prophets" were intelligent, well respected individuals and the used God to explain everything they couldn't. I don't think God told them what to right down, I think they wrote down what they thought was best for their city and humanity. It doesn't say God exists or it doesn't, I just don' think that God makes an impact on everyday life.

This could be completely true, the prophets understood God more than anyone at the time. If they wrote down exactly what He "told" them or whatever (because i believe God somehow communicated with them), people at the time might have looked at them and thought they were crazy. Instead, the prophets wrote it down so people could relate and understand it. The words written were still true, the words weren't twisted or anything, just interpreted for the world at the time.

The fables and stories in the bible were not put together until all of the people are said to have written the stories had died.
It's not a history book, it's a story book with a moral lesson.
...Matt was no exception to this. When he stood in the street and noticed his chest started to really hurt again, he made the decision to look down. He screamed like a grown man would scream when that grown man sees a laser burning his chest, and that is like a little girl...

I didn't mean to say you were a Fundamentalist. I was just trying to be funny and it came out wrong. Sorry Mr. Muller.

Hahaha... it's all good Mr. Joad. To be honest i had no clue what a fundamentalist was until i looked it up on m-w.com. :)

Added: Dr. Jim i have to agree with you again. The bible shouldn't be taken literally, its the morals you should take from it.

The sad thing is, if we do somehow disprove religion, no one will read the bible, which is the best book of morals ever made.

Yet again I agree with you Mr. Muller. Christians and Agnostics CAN get along.

You should never call is the best. It's a book or morals, but the best, or even a really good one.
However, it's usually the only one that most people read before they say it's the best.

Well I was just making a point Dr. Jim. There is no way to prove it is the best or not the best because we haven't read every book and it is just a matter of opinion.

I was getting at the point that a lot of people read it because it is religious, not because it is a book of stories.

The great thing about the bible is it can be interpreted how ever the reader wants. The only problem is sometimes the bible gets so whacky that you need help interpreting it, which can cause debate over the meaning of some passages. The entire bible is controversial. Some people say according to the bible God doesn't believe in abortion, yet somewhere else in the bible it tells a story of a man killing his unborn baby. Its all how you interpret it.

People being able to interpret the Bible in countless ways is why it holds so much power. Anybody can say his opinion is backed by the Bible without even trying. When the general population is smartenough to think for themselves and not care if it came from the Bible then we will be far better off. (It probably won't ever happen)

Well I think the genearl population thinks for themselves, it's just that the loudest (fundamentalist) and the powerful (insert name) still do take from the bible.

The sad thing is, if we do somehow disprove religion, no one will read the bible, which is the best book of morals ever made.

You really, really, really didn't want to go there, Hawkeye.

Which part of Biblical morality is it that you admire most? The mass murders committed over fraudulent complaints? The "you can rape these women if you really like, just make sure you pay them afterwards" bit? The fact that there's more detailed descriptions of murder and killing than there is of love and peace? Let's list the great morality in the Bible:

1 Chronicles 20 in which David, a "great leader" of the Bible executes an entire city after the cessation of hostilities in warfare. Such great morality! Such moral guidance! Now I know what to do in Iraq.

Let's not forget about that sterling character Gideon. He plots (together with God, no less!) to murder thousands of people through treachery. He murders thousands more for believing differently than he does in spiritual matters. He slaughters even more because they mock him. (Yeah. Great morality that. Kill people over words....) He plunders the bodies--to make clothes for a priest. (Then read on about his son with great moral character.)

And how about killing all the children of Egypt? The Egyptian leaders won't free the Jews, so their children get murdered by God. Such morality! Why not kill the leaders instead? Because that would make more sense. God's not prone to doing that in the Bible.

Death penalty for changing your beliefs. I don't need to add anything to that horror of morality.

Murder children for the crimes of their parents. Not to mention the animals....

"Go kill all the male children and all the non-virgin women, but you can take away the virgin girls for your own pleasure." If this doesn't disgust you, I really don't want to know. People who do this kind of crap are not human and deserve no kind of consideration as ethical beings.

"Murder everybody after killing their children before their eyes and raping all their wives." Disgusting.

Annon loves his sister just a little too much. Until he's had his way with her, of course. Then he hates her. Lovely moral tale!

Look. This is ridiculously easy like shooting fish in a barrel. Fish over fifteen feet long coiled into a barrel three feet in diameter. I'm barely scratching the surface of the horrific atrocities in the Bible and I'm just skimming. Were I to go in-depth, I'd hit the hard limit of message sizes on this board.

If people think the Bible is the greatest work of morals ever made, I mourn humanity.
