Heck, why not? Raise taxes for the top 5% to make up for it. And only tax thos in the upper 40%. Have it be a gradual tax so that there isn't a ceiling most people don't want to fight through. This would discourage companies from employing illegal trespassers and encourage them to give benifits to all employees, since if the employee doesn't have insurance, it'll be their tax dollars paying for it. The lack of taxes would also give the lower and middle class more spending money so they'd buy more from the major corporations and then they'd be taxed more and the government would have more money. No, I don't really understand economics, and because of this I suspect this wouldn't actually work, could someone explain the flaws? Because maybe then we could make it work

No way, make it a flat tax so everybody is even. Don't punish people who are successful. |

I come from a middle class family and although I think taxes should be lower, people still have to pay them. But you can forget about the idea of way higher taxes for the rich and little to no taxes for the poor, because the rich are the ones who collect the taxes and spend them. |

Some rich do, but atm the appears to be a pissing contest to see who can make the most money. It's why McDonalds closes every store that tries to get unionized. It'd be a loss of profit. I respect those like Ray Kroc that worked their butts off to make these companies, but not those who later take control and are trying to screw people over and don't care. But really, I was just wondering if it'd work. Plus, I am tired of (what from my view) looks like people gathering piles of money but not spending them. Just bragging about how much they have. I love Starbucks though. They purposly pay more for their coffee than they have to (about twice as much as the market value) to help the farmers. Pay them more if they cycle through a lot of land instead of growing on one patch till it's dead. More if they don't use child labor. More if they donate to charities. More for helping anyone or anything around them. Well, I guess I'd be trying to force people to help others. |

No! *slap* You cannot treat any group unfairly. The rich have more money because of one of three reasons: They earned it They are better people They were born into it. If they earned it, then they deserve it. If they are better people, then they deserve it. If they were born into it, the flaw in the system shows itself. You have to tax everyone, based on income and holdings, if you're going to tax at all. |

...Matt was no exception to this. When he stood in the street and noticed his chest started to really hurt again, he made the decision to look down. He screamed like a grown man would scream when that grown man sees a laser burning his chest, and that is like a little girl... -From Super Naked Moose Man | |

I'm taking a microeconomics class and have already learned that taxing luxury items does not work. Say you put a hefty tax on yachts. Who ends up getting hurt by the tax, the rich? Nope. They can simply choose to buy a private jet instead of a yacht. The companies that manufacture yachts and the workers in those factories are the ones that suffer due to a sudden plummet in the demand for the product they supply. |

Legalize all drugs but make people have to get prescriptions to buy them and charge a huge tax on all of the now illegal drugs. |

The same way someone scores a prescription for depression meds. (They are in most cases useless) Or the same way athletes score prescriptions for steroids and growth hormone. (Most athletes take these drugs on prescription.) |

For the record, I was refering to income taxes. If you're in the upper tier, you're tax rate goes slightly up. If you're in the lower/middle class, you suddenly have more money to spend on what the upper class is selling. So everyone wins! I think = / And the rich pay more of the taxes already anyway. It would not be a significant raise relative to what they're already paying. |

I would be in favour of raising taxes on the rich if I thought there was a government that could use the money wisely. Granted, I'm in favour of raising taxes on the rich already, simply because I like taking away from the ones who have more than they need. |

Query: How do the wealthy spend taxes? It seems to me that tax dolors go into things the general public enjoys, like public schools (Ok, so noone enjoys those) and national defence. The rest seems to go to the poor (See: welfare). So, the feds spend tax dollars, as do the poor. Even the public goods the government provides: If you're wealthy enough, you can have your own private park, have your own roads constructed for your compound, and send your kids to a private school. . . and if your particularly wealthy (and nuts), hire your own private mercenary army. I'll back a flat tax. What's fairer than taking the exact same percentage out of everyone's income? I mean, if you're gonna tax anyway, why subsidize poverty and tax wealth? Runs against a basic law of economics, assuming you want more wealth and less poverty: What you want MORE of, you SUBSIDIZE. What you want LESS of, you TAX. Simple, no? Why can't politicians figure this out? Bad enough one side thinks tax hikes always result in revenue increaces, while the other thinks tax cuts always equal increaces. Neither is true: the tax maximization thing is on a curve. Some countries are on one side (The ones that would increase revenues by cutting taxes), others are on the other (The ones that would increase revenue by raising taxes). *Sigh* |

I think we should have the tax that graduatlly increases with income level, I forget what it is called. For example lower class gets taxed 23%, middle class 25%, and upper 27%. This will allow for the lower class to get some more spending money but not totally screw over the upper class. I think we should have like a hollywood tax or something like that because those people make way to much money and spend it on the most pointless things. I'm almost positive they didn't work as hard for it as an entrupenuer who built an empire from the bottom up too. |
