Too true, 严加华, unfortunately.

Good song, BTW. Have it live (on Exit, Stage Left), and studio (Retrospective I). Of course, I'm sort of a Rush fan. . .

Wonder if that eliminates my credibility. . .
May the blessing of Our Lady of the Workshop be upon you.

I never really knew that much about Rush and regarded them as just another 80's band until I saw Exit, Stage Left at my friends house on his new surround sound. I was blown away by their musicianship. Der Trommler almost killed me.

Neil Peart (sp?) and Geddy Lee are considered two of the finest musicians alive. Many drummers in many musical disciplines (rock, jazz, blues and even CLASSICAL) finger Peart as a major influence on their styles and even their choice of avocation. And Lee is simply the best bass player in history. Not to mention the fact that he frequently plays about a half-dozen instruments simultaneously while singing as the front-man for Rush. All live on stage.

Poor Alex Lifeson has to settle for being merely a master guitar player. He's considered good. Even great by some. But he's drastically outshone by his two partners.

And calling them an '80s band. *shudder* I was rocking to them in '76. Indeed it was their late '80s and early '90s stuff that pissed me off the most.

I'm a drummer... Neil Peart is close to the best...but I still prefer Keith Moon, of The Who. He's just so raw - and he's the one who started the whole "destroy your instrument" fad, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and to say something like "life isn't fair, deal with it", is just too easy. That's giving up - resigning oneself to defeat. It's like saying "Oh well, you were born with no arms and no legs, just deal with it." No wheelchair, no prosthetics, no sympathy, nothing. Once we have global equality of opportunity, then you can make the "it just takes hard work" argument. But until then, don't entirely fault the lower class for their disposition. If you and I are racing and I start half a mile ahead of you, with top-of-the-line shoes and the best trainer, and you start with boots, no trainer and a family history of bad knees, who's going to win. Sure you could win if you tried really really reallyhard. But you won't. But I guess life's just unfair like that. Riiiight.

and if he did try, he'd die from the knee problems and be forever crippled.

but if rich people tried as hard as poor people, man that'd be crazy
The vast majority of schooling is spent teaching young minds what is heresy and not worth considering. The rest is spent scoffing at closed-minded individuals refusing to accept the new sciences of their time.

I said "best drummer alive".... ;)

That being said, I still place Keith Moon second to Peart. Moon is great at the basic set, but Peart's drum kit is like the freakin' New York City skyline. I guess the big difference is this: Peart's a percussionist. Moon's a drummer.

Still, they're in the same league. I suspect we're differing only slightly in our respective esteems.

Now as to your "life isn't fair" bit. Yes, saying "life isn't fair, suck it up" is a cop-out. But so is saying "I'm helpless because life isn't fair". We can work to make life less unfair -- but it will always be fair and using unfairness as an excuse for inaction or, worse, negative action is pathetic.

I was not born to anything particularly good (by western standards). My father was an immigrant and a soldier. My mother was an immigrant and a bank teller. I fouled up my educational prospects by getting into university before I was mature enough for it. I fell out of university without a degree.

Yet, despite the financial, social and, in the end, educational handicaps, I had a twelve-year career of ever-increasing salaries and ever-increasing responsibilities. In my final year in high tech I had a six-figure income, a lovely home, a lovely car (Acura 3.2TL with heavy customisation) and all the amenities that make normal people drool. And I got there not by whining about unfairness (although life certainly was unfair!) but by working my ass off and making the right choices along the way (after the disastrous one involving my education).

And after I threw it all away, I built up a whole new career in education. And am switching back to high tech in my own business. Again by working my ass off and making the right choices (most of the time anyway).

Yes, life is unfair and that unfairness can be mitigated somewhat. But life being unfair isn't an excuse to whinge and slack.

1. Neil Peart--undenyable

2. Danny Carey from Tool--owns Keith Moon

I totally agree with Chinese symbol guy. I come from a upper-middle-class US family so maybe I'm not the one to talk, but I would assume that anybody who visits these forums in wealthy by world standards because you have access to a computer and internet. I read the other day that when the movie "The Grapes of Wrath" came out they dubbed it into Russian and aired it there to show that all Americans aren't rich spoiled brats. Sadly the plan backfired because the Russians envied the Joad family because they were wealthy by their standards. Life is only as unfair as you let it be; some people get head-starts but everybody can finish the race.

If you are born with AIDS you are behind the eight ball, but it doesn't mean that you don't have a chance.

I don't see how that accounts for much.

Only the survivors are aware of the victims.

I think there shouldn't be taxes at all. Why? Because there shouldn't be even such a naggy thing trying to control our lives! (read: government)
IMO everyone should get the same chance for wealth. Use it properly, and get rich. F**k it up, and live in poverty.

P.S, isn't the topic derailing?

Hmm... I thought this thread was officially dead, but I must say that I enjoy roads and puclic schools. While I think the government should be smaller, I appreciate the good things it does.

Yeah, having no taxes would not be good at all. The only way we could get away with it is if the government starts controlling companies and we turn into a socialist state. Isn't that called a Socialist Democracy or something like that? I don't think that is too bad of an idea but the masters (corporations) would not be happy at their pets (politicians). In Kuwait the people don't have to pay taxes because the government makes so much money of oil.

Everyone has the "chance for wealth". Some people just have to try harder. Anyway, taxes suck, yes, but that's life. Don't like it? You can go to jail.
