Wait, wait... who says that i have to follow every word in the bible to get into heaven? I can't believe in Jesus and God if i don't follow the bible word for word? Oh man, i better get started. So you say the bible told people to get back the holy land? Never have i argued that the entire bible is truth, humans aren't perfect, i'm sure people have added things to the bible (including the gay thing). Maybe someone threw in a verse talking about how Christians have to get back the holy land. Christians at the time who followed the bible word for word would have fought. For me, however, i would not have. Because of what i believe.
Do you know what Jesus preached? Can you say exactly what he did? No of course not. Maybe i should take back my statement when i said i follow everything he preached. Because i don't know everything he preached. I probably don't even know the tiniest fraction of it. Although, i can say i believe in him and i believe in all the things i know about him. Teach me everything you know about him. Maybe you'll change my mind, it will be hard, but you can still try. Prove to me Jesus was a bad man and why i shouldnt believe in him... please EDIT: right now i'm gonna hit the hay. i would love to pick up this conversation in the morning. |

I don't want to change your mind. I'd love for the entire Christian base, to just look into everything before they just blindly follow something. |

I'm going to have to stick up for Mr. Muller here. Jesus (as the figure of Jesus, I'm not even saying he existed) did nothing wrong. All Jesus (figurehead) did was preach peace and love. The problems with Christianity occur when people in power in the church bastardize the Bible and the doctrine of the church. So your beef shouldn't be with Jesus it should be with Christianity. And Muller said that he doesn't take the bible literally and doesn't expect perfection for anybody. So don't expect him to be perfect because he doesn't expect you to be perfect. Again I repeat: Jesus did not start the crusades and/or any of the other terrible things that have been doen in th name of Christianity, greedy people within the church did. If you blame Jesus for the crusades you would be contradicting yourself if you didn't blame Muhammed for all the Islamic terrorist attacks. I'm a raised Christian but not a devout one nd even I can see that isn't fair how much everybody gangs up on Christianity. Almost all major religions have done terrible things so we shouldn't have to single Christianity out. You could be like me and not be a part of any organized religion and then you have no blood on your hands (just like Jesus and Muhammed)

Maybe i should have cleared this up earlier. In one post on these forums (i think it was this thread) something happened to me in the last few days that made me extremely spiritual. So far, everything i heard about Jesus, in my mind, was good. So thats why i said i beleive in everything he taught. I shouldn't have, but i did, i really meant i believe in everything i know about him. And also another reason i got so defensive is because i realized not everyone out there is religious. Zer0 when were comparing Jesus to Hitler it scared me because it made me realize not all people have the same beliefs. I also learned that no matter how hard i try or fight for my beliefs, there will always be someone out there who wont join my side. I hope we are all still friends
That is the problem, i am a new born (like 5 days old) to the Christian ideas, although i was baptized, recieved communion, and confirmed. I didn't know what was going on at any of these. It's only now, 4 years after being confirmed that i am realizing. Made i shouldn't have faught for the side of Jesus just yet, i should have done some more research, sorry Zer0. |

The J-man ownd, it was his followers that are stupid blind assholes. If I was going to hell, I would not worry, the hell in the Bible is a place where god is not in there, not a place where fire and brimestone burned unbelivers. According to the bible, not having god in your heart is a worse torture than watching a million Richard Simmions work out tapes .

No, I enjoy religious debate. Thank you. My entire family is devout Christian and I love to debate them in this subject. Being the only agnostic in our entire family tree. |

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." "The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." Revelation 19. (I won't quote that long mess here.) "I have come to set fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until the ordeal is over! Do you suppose I came to establish peace on earth? No indeed, I have come to bring division. For from now on, five members of a family will be divided, three against two and two against three; father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother." "He said to them, “When I sent you out barefoot without purse or pack, were you ever short of anything?” “No,” they answered. “It is different now,” he said; “whoever has a purse had better take it with him, and his pack too; and if he has no sword, let him sell his cloak to buy one. For Scripture says, ‘And he was counted among the outlaws,’”…“Look, Lord,” they said, “we have two swords here.” “Enough, enough!” he replied." Yep. Nothing but peace and love, there. |

You don't know that is what Jesus preached. I am almost positive the church has changed and added a couple parts. Maybe Jesus did preach all peace or maybe Jesus preached violence and pain, or both, we will never know unless we actually went back in time. The one I really disagree with is the second quote. It wasn't until less than 1,000 years ago when hell was associated with torture and physical pain. The bible never says the word torture but torment. In the 13th century and around that time artist were obsessed with the thought of hell. All they did was paint the worst possible thing they could think of. |

Are you seriously trying to distinguish between eternal pain and eternal torment?

Yes I am, one theory is that hell is all fire, brimstone, torture and all that. If there is a hell I do not think this is how it will be. This would be torture. Another theory and the one I would sway more towards, I got this from the twilight zone. Has anyone seen the one where the U-boat commander dies and his hell is being onboard the ships that he destroyed and that repeats for eternity? Something like that would be more realistic, personal, and effective. Another theory I have heard is that you live the worst moment of your life over and over again (Making heaven the best moment of your life repeated for eternity). Another theory is that you live the life of the person that you hurt the most and experience everything you did to him/her for eternity. These aren't external torture and pain but more psychological and would be torment. |

Pain is pain. All pain is in the head, in the end, so I don't really distinguish between "torture" and "torment". |

 hahahahaha pierce this reminds me of Bill and Teds Bogus Journey. I love that movie
Wouldn't you say physical pain is only felt when alive because of messages sent to brain by chemicals and whatever. In the afterlife, i think most people will agree, that you do not have any physical properties, only a spiritual entity. Hell can't be physical torture or pain. It's probably just "spiritual unbalance", for a lack of a better way of putting it. Until you "balance" your "spirit", you will live in a dark, horrible place (hell). When you do "balance" it, you will have a happy afterlife. EDIT: just curious, does anyone here believe there is no afterlife? ADDED
This just brings up the age old debate over how the bible is controversial. John 3:16 goes something like this: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it." You find a quote from the bible, and 99% of the time, some one will find a way to counter it with another quote from the bible. |
