So what do we all think about GWB vetoing stem cell research? Personally, i'm in favour of such research, but I completely understand and respect why people would be against it. Therefore, when they grow old and develop Alzheimers, cancer, Parkinson's etc, they shouldn't recieve any treatment gained from Stem Cell research. Anyhow, thoughts on his vetoing? |

I totally agree, stem cells are someday going to save millions of people's lives. But not anytime soon because of George freakin Bush. We are going to have to travel to India or something to get treated with stem cells. |

I'll believe these claims of miracle cures when I see `em. And didn't he only veto federal funding for said research? Y'all are aware that embryonic stem cell research is perfectly legal in the US, right? Research can continue without Big Governent (tm) footing the bill, especially if it's as potentially profitable as it's proponents claim. I'm reserving any judgement on said research until I see results. Promices of cures based on theory, hypothesis, and supposition aren't enough. Give me a working test run, then we'll talk. If you can't get it to work, don't waste my time. I'm more amazed by the fact that Dubbya actually vetoed something. This is a first, isn't it? |

Yeah it was Bush's first veto. As Stephen Colbert put it, Bush lost his "veto virginity". There are plenty of tests out there on mice and monkeys and stuff that proves stem cells really work. I know it's still legal and there are stem cell research centers all over the country. I think in CA they are building a center and Governer Shwartsenagger (you know who im talking about) donated $100 million to. I'm just a little pissed that the federal government is funding all these programs (i dont want to get into all of them) and Bush can't even float over a couple of bucks in stem cell's direction. Yeah we are in a war blah blah oil blah blah which is where all of our money is at, but i mean theres not one cent in the budget that Bush can help with? Every little bit helps. |

Ok, what do you mean stem cells "work". If you mean that they are useable for conversion into a useful cell type, then duh. That's kinda what they do. I'm looking for, you know, a practical application. Some report on progress towards the lofty goals stem cell researchers and their supporters have set. Seems like we understand how they work. Where are the cures? Where are even the most rudimentary of treatments involving the products of stem cell research? I'm not against said research, I just wanna see if they can do what they say they can. If they can, great. I'll gladly find some cash to invest. If not, stop wasting our research dollars. *Sits to patiently wait on cures, treatments, or something beyond verification of what these cells were designed to do* |

I totally agree with you. I'm just saying if Bush gave even just a little bit of money to stem cell research then maybe you wouldn't have to sit and patiently wait on cures, treatments, or something beyond verification of what these cells were designed to do for as long. I'm sure there have been things Bush threw money at which at the time seemed like a good idea but have proved to not work out according to plan (oh wait, maybe the entire war). Whats the difference with stem cells? Whats $1 million out of the pocket of the federal government? Nothing. Whats $1 million out of the pocket of the government and into the pockets of devoted doctors researching stem cells? EVERYTHING. I'm just mad Bush just vetoed the entire thing now congress has to go through to time and effort to start another bill. (i think, i'm not too familiar with the way the government works
)

Not to bring up the past, but didn't Bush's predicessor not spend dime one on stem cell research, despite the fact that the technology wasn't really that far behind where it is now? Did just fine then. I too have my grievances with government spending of my tax dollars on things that just plain don't work, or they refuse to fix (See: Social Security). It'd be nice if they were more conservative with their finds, not just blowing them on whatever comes up. `Course, I'm also opposed to the idea that a technology is dead if the government doesn't fund it. . . |

The controversy with stem cells is not the money, but if it is moral to grow embryotic stem cells for research. As in combineing the sperm with the egg then wait a week or so, kill it, then use it for research. The people who are against this research should not complain in anyway if they get a disease that can be cured by stem cells though. |

There is nothing immoral what-so-ever about stem cell usage. Anyone who does the tiniest bit of unbiased research will find this out quickly. Stem cells can come from placenta (thrown away), damaged cells (thrown away), frozen cells (thrown away), et cetra. Stem cell research does NOT cost lives, it does NOT cost potential lives, it does NOT equal abortion, it is NOT immoral. The reason that excuse is being used is because it's the only one that can make the president seem like a good guy. The real reason that stem cell research isn't being backed? Stem cells can be used to find cures for all sorts of diseases. As the old saying goes, "Give a man a fish [pill] and he'll eat [be healthy] for a day. Teach a man to fish [cure him] and he'll stop buying your fish [pill]." Drug companies don't want people having access to cures, it costs them money. Thus, they want to stop any research that has the chance of finding cures. It just so happens they own our government at the moment. |

OK I never knew that was what this bill was about. I thought it banned all stem cell research in the US. If that is what it is about then I'm all for Bush vetoing the bill. I don't think that the government should be spending its money on things that medical companies can research with their billions of dollars. It is the true Libertarian way. Hopefully I can learn the PALADIN way too.

Dr. Jim said it perfectly. We have stem cells here to use, we understand them, whats the big deal. No one dies from using them, people will live. Barely any bad with a whole heap of good. |

Stem cells are legal to use. The veto banned growing your own stem cells for research. I still think it should be allowed though. |
