This story covers a few other topics in other threads and I couldn't decide which one to put it in so I decided to make a new one. The fact that these are being vetoed on religoious grounds is idiotic. Whats even more pathetic is the reasons why they are being vetoed (other than it being religious). Not only is Bush making young women, a lot in the lower class, pay extra money and waste time and energy because the government doesn't want to encourage premarital sex, but violating the ammendment of seperation of chuch and state. The fourth last paragraph sums up how stupid this is. |

I think the separation thing was pretty much out the window when Bush created the Department for Faith-Based Initiatives. Heavily religious countries tend to really hate sex, since it's apparently so shameful. When it gets up to the government, well, stupid things happen. |

Planning World Domination

Rather bizzarely, the United Kingdom is one of two countries in the world that have an officially interlinked Church and State (the other being Iran). We have nowhere near the problem that you do with sex and the like, so it can't be solely based on this issue. It's a cultural thing as well, I reckon. Having said that, there is a growing section of Evangelist Christians in this country trying to force their crap on all of us, so I think we might be starting to get your problem over here. |

The people making the ideas, voting on the ideas, and bitching about the ideas, are christians. You cannot hold high political office without being one, so they're ideas are going to end up getting passed, no matter how wrong they are. There is nothing we can do about. |

I heard somehwhere that to run for office in Texas you have to publically announce you believe in a higher power. It may have been a link from this site but I'm not sure. |

Well, it's not like they can prove it. There's no moral problem with lying about what you believe in when there's no moral system. |

If you are a known atheist and then you suddenly say you believe in God right before you run for office may stir up some controversy. I don't know if you only have to publicly state you believe in a higher power or what. They may have some other requirements too. |

"Atheist" != "no moral system". The atheists I know (which is most of the people around me) are more moral than most of the loud Christians I've met in my life. |

Also I would add that most of the people who stray from the beaten religious path that I know are more spiritually introspective too. |

Oh, yeah, I'm not saying they are immoral. I'm saying that they realize there is no immortal punishment for immoral actions, such as lying about what you believe. |

I was raised a liberal Baptist, so I have more of a perspective. Before the 1980's the Southern Baptist Convention (the largest protestant denomination in the US) was absolutely in favor of the separation of church and state. They were against the ten commandments in school, prayer in school, etc.. It wasn't until the eighties, when fundamentalist Calvinists started agressively taking over the Southern Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Seminaries. They would refuse checks from churches who refused to adopt their positions - if they refused your check, you lost your voting priviliges; they forced professors in the seminaries, who refused to start teaching fundamental Calvinist docterine, to resign or be forced out, etc. So since the eighties, this fundamentalism, ushered in by a few collusive individuals, has been shoved down the throats of well meaning christians. I'm not saying that all christians are on the right side of the issues - there is a huge contingency of out-of-control fundamintalists - but you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Just because the most powerful and well-known Christians are fundamentalist and have hijacked their religion for political gain, doesn't mean that there aren't a ton of smart christians who do genuinely care and are "good willed" Al Franken joke: I'm not an expert on the New Testament. But I know that if you cut out all the parts where Jesus talks about helping the poor and the least among us - you'd have a perfect box to smuggle Rush Limbaugh's drugs in. |

Decent joke, but falls flat on its face on reality issues. If you take all the parts where Jesus talks at all in the Bible (a red letter edition helps here), you'll lose... about five pages. That, to me, is one of the major flaws in Christianity. You're following the words of a total sociopath (Saul of Tarsus) as he interprets the unrecorded words of someone who may or may not have said anything nice. |

I love the idea of the separation of the church and the state (although it never really happens, whoever has power makes their ideology law). And that is one reason why many times I find myself on the boring side of rooting against the 'terrorists'. I just can't take the side of a group of people who want an Islamic state, or a Christian state for that matter. |
