Exactly. <_< Just like Oliver Stone's JFK has everyone convinced that bullets can be magical. People "learn" too much from movies. |

That's the great thing about ideals- You CAN pick what country you end up in after you're born. Don't like the country you're in? By all means, move to a diferent one. If it's that important to you, it's worth the effort. I don't think of it a nationalism, really. Just loyalty to one's country of residence. Therefore, so long as I live in the US(at least four more years now) I will give complete loyalty to the US. When my time in the Army is up, I'll once more be free to chose a diferent country to live in if I wish. |

Why should one owe loyalty to one's country of residence? Especially if, as you note, one can simply leave? |

The real issue is "what is loyalty?" To a simple-minded jingoist, loyalty is "<insert name of country, but usually America>, love it or leave it!" of "my country, right or wrong!" To someone with more brains loyalty involves accepting the failures and flaws of your country and doing things to change it. That's why you can have "loyal" people beating up other "loyal" people at peace demonstrations. To the first crowd (simple-minded jingoists), any hint of criticism directed at the leadership during a "time of war" is tantamount to treason. To the second crowd (the ones with more brains and, therefore, the ability to look past their noses), prosecuting an unjust war that generates ever-increasing numbers of enemies is tantamount to treason. But they're both "loyal". |

There is a difference between fighting a war like in Iraq or defending your country from an outside force. If your country is in danger of being overrun I think you have an obligation to your country to defend it. |

That's true as well. I would fight for my country were it attacked. (Especially true given that our most likely attacker would be the USA. The absolute last thing I'd want in my country is American-style government, politics and culture.) I would not fight for my country if it, like the USA is hell-bent on doing, went on a berserk frenzy of wars of aggression, however. Were I still a serving member of my country's armed forces, I would refuse orders in a war of aggression and go to jail or even get executed over participating in aggression. Thankfully my country isn't one noted for going off and beating up on smaller countries.
My country had a golden opportunity in its past. It had the opportunity to take the best of three cultures. It could have had British government, French culture and American know-how. But sadly it chose instead to have French government, American culture and British know-how....

What about Tibet and that Tiwan? I think the requirement to defend the country depends on the amount of taxes paid versus services rendered. I pay to be a citizen, why pay with a life on top of that? |
