Is anyone familiar with the current genocide in Darfur? It is considered the first genocide of the 21st century. If i am correct 400,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million have been displaced over the last 4 years. Everyone all over the world is pretty much just sitting and waiting for someone else to make the first move. Even GW is reluctant to send troops to the area. Does anyone know what is currently happening in Darfur or know of any plans to stop the genocide? |

The African Union has been trying to help for a while now, but they're pretty ill-equiped to handle the situation and their commitment to the region expiresin September. The UN just passed a resolution to send a little over 22,000 troops to the region (China and Russia didn't vote....hmmm). The US says that using the UN is "more cost-effective", and that, frankly the US doesn't have the troops to spare. I think things are finaly starting to happen, but it's about a year and a half past due. |

Two years ago, a girl at my high school did something for this. Her cousin is a documentarist and wanted to do a piece on the Darfur Genocide. (Apparently her whole family felt strongly about fighting this). And she managed to get 3 women from Darfur to come to our school and talk, and later that night there was a huge candle light vigil and the mayor came to the presentation and declared a "Genocide Awareness Day" for our town. It was pretty cool, and we wound up petitioning and raising money to help families there. |

I once knew this girl in elementary school who came her from Africa, and now lives with her uncle. [I don't know if she came from Darfur]. She had a fake leg and her sister had a fake arm. This is because her family was murdered where she used to live. They were killed because wherever they lived, the parents had to bring a certain amount of gold home. One day, the parents brought too little gold, and soldiers or something came and killed them, and chopped off the young girls leg and the others arm off. |

I thought the borders were locked and no one was allowed in or out of Darfur. |
