The last I heard the most governments don't want to be ruled by other governments. I know you can't really prove it unless you actually went to Iraq, but what do the people want and what is better for the country as a whole?

To answer your question, there is no upside of staying. But, if the downside of leaving is worse than the downside of staying you decide to stay. The US is in a situation where both sides are bad for them, they just have to decide which one is better of the two bads.
Dropped the atomic bomb let them know that it's real
Speak soft with a big stick do what I say or be killed
I'm America!

I have found the enemy and he is us.

Choosing between two evils is no choice at all. It seems to me what you are saying is if we leave (no matter what circumstances) we fail. But it's not our decision to stay or leave, it's not even Iraq's decision until the US says it's Iraq's decision. It's the Bush regime's decision, and they will stay and fight until all the oil is dry and the money burned, unless, we the people do something about this.

I say, send 60 or 70,000 more troops, and let's end this thing. Why are we trying to bring first world politics, and security to a third world country, plagued by violence, with a minimal number of troops? Why no plan of action? The answer, if you don't believe greed, is arrogance over ignorance, or ignorance over arrogance and none of the aforementioned is a forgivable offense when commited by you or me, much less the President of these United States. Bottom line, there is no upside except money for Exxon and defense contracts for Bush buddies. 10s of thousnads dead, but Exxon has had their best year EVER. Actually, Exxon has had everyone's best year ever, because no one company, has ever cleared as much profit in one half of the year than exxon did this past fiscal year. All the evidence is right in front of us. We ignore REAL human rights catastrophes like Darphur (Oh, we have to consult the UN on that one and formulate a plan), yet we swoop into the nearest oil rich country lickety split, without even a glance at the ol' wristwatch to make sure that dawn is not near, calling out TERRORISM, then waylaying all political opposition with thunderous cries of "anti-American" or "Un-patriotic". It;s a crock of shit, and some people are just too scared to see it.

It's the US citizens, that have opposed past administrations and policies, that have shaped this nation, not the citizens who blindly follow suit.
