You have to excuse people, Tom. People with little to no direct experience with farming and the sort have foolishly sentimental notions about the nobility of manual labour. Those who've read too much Tolstoy will go so far as to think that farming is a noble profession (instead of what it really is: backbreaking, soul-destroying labour chiefly involving whacking the soil with a stick).

Me, personally, when I hear people talking about how bad the Industrial Revolution was, I get the urge to force them into a life here in China in the paddies. I doubt any of them would last past a week, though, and I'm not really all that interested in being responsible for their deaths.

Well I admire famrers, because they do a job that has to be done. Not that I would want to do it.

Then again I don't know any real farmers. I know the guys who drive around in tractors and act like they work hard. I don't know the guys out there working the paddies with their bare hands.

Indeed, but he would be a badass none the less.

A poor idiotic badass.

the industrial revolution wasn't all bad, but it wasn't all GOOD either... the crap spewed into the environment due to the burning of fossil fuels, which is what the poster who brought this up was talking about, would definitely fall under "bad"... yes, the industrial revolution VASTLY improved our quality of life, but it also took a dump all over the environment and made us dependant on fossil fuels and such...

It was a phase we had to go through though. We are starting to get a little better with pollution but I don't think we are going to stop anytime soon.

I know that I would trade pollution for a higher standard of living in a second. As long as the pollution doesn't encroach on your standard of living there is no problem. And the way I worded my statement the pollution wouldn't bother with my standard of living.
