It's more likely that they will force the US's hand in the middle east, than SA. It's natural succesion anyway, and something we eventually HAVE to deal with, right? I think that China's super speedy growth is one of the reasons we are in the Middle East. We are there for a Smash and grab, before China can muster the strength to throw their weight around in the Desert, a la Aircraft Carrier fleet in about 5 or six years. However the way the South Americans are leaning towards Socialism and Communism, it would makes sense for China to do business with them anyway, considering it would piss the US off. China WILL be THE super Power within Two decades. Regardless of where they buy their gas from. All they have to do is sit back and watch the avian flu dwindle the insanely large poverty problem. Thus queling a future human rights revolt, without ever firing a shot, or running people down with tanks. With that problem solved and all the right people having Vaccines and money, they wll be ripe to throw their weight wherever they please. Where does a 600 lb gorrila shit? In Uncle Sam's hat, where else. |

It'll take a while for Chinese to catch on. Chinese businessmen are learning English, not Americans learning Chinese, so they'll use that as long as it's convenient. I have to agree that learning Chinese wouldn't be fun though. I'd imagine a logographic (word-based) writing system would be a pain to learn. |

I know, it's much harder to learn a language with no alphabet. |

There's obviously some for of organization, or else there'd be almost no way for the average person to learn them all. The problem is that the Western world has never had a lingua franca that wasn't alphabetic, so it'll be a pain for them to go out and learn this new way of writing, rather than a new language with the same symbols, or even just the same organization. Asia has had to deal with alphabets for centuries, either because of business necessity or Western imperialism, so even if they don't speak it regularly between family, they might be familiar with the language and they certainly have plenty of people who are teaching it. America and European foreign language studies usually focus on Indo-European, Latin-based languages, which means we're less equipped to learn it. So in a roundabout way of saying it, learning Chinese is going to be a pain in the ass for Westerners. I still would like to see an easy, efficient international language be made for the purpose of international relations. Like Esperanto, but without having a specific region in mind when making it. |

More and more businessmen are learning Chinese, actually. My friend (and business partner) is taking a Chinese class out of interest. (Me living in China and married to a Chinese wife generated that interest.) Most of his classmates are there at the behest of their employers to give the edge in negotiations. And the Chinese writing system isn't so difficult. Picture what English would look like if you made all the letters of each word fit into the same size square, thus having to occasionally squish and distort letters to make things fit. |

I'll have to agree. When I was in college, I knew a whole slew of people learning Mandarin Chinese. The language is so mysterious westerners that I can see why we think it is difficult. But once you get right down to it, most Asian lagnuages are fairly easy to learn. It's English that is nearly the hardest language to learn. That is why you should show respect for a Middle Easterner or Asian, who has decent English skills. It's difficult to grasp the helping verb, prepositional phrase, thing not to mention the whole Blue and Blew and Bleu deal. These things just do not exist in other languages. That is not even metnioning the amount of slang you would need to learn, just to hold a conversation with an American. :ph43r: |

I am thinking of taking a year of Mandarin next year in college. I am taking Polish right now and I am doing decent in it. How much would you guys recommend it? It would be nice to have a background of Spanish, Polish, and Mandarin on my resume. |

Can't hurt. In thirty years the Oil trade will be in the "people's money", and probably their language as well. |
