I don't think we will have lasers because why use all that energy to kill a man when you can kill him with a bullet?

Lasers leave little mess don't they, or do they cause just as much mess as a bullet?

Still, lasers cost a lot of money.

They'll cost a smuch as a bullet once we understand how to make them like we make bullets today.

Slightly off topic here, but it is very unlikely that in the foreseeable future we'll replace guns.
The reason being, we need guns, or more accurately, bullets.

As I'm sure many of you are aware, tones of nuclear waste (metallic barium with some uranium impurity) is generated each and every year. As this metal is still emitting some nuclear radiation we can't put it into society. To resolve this issue the bulk of it is used to make bullets which are usually expended in the next war that comes by.

Until we find another use for nuclear waste the humble bullet is going to stay with us.

Back to the topic at hand, lasers just aren't practical, even ignoring the energy issues.

One of the major benefits of projectile weaponry, be it bow or artillery, is the ability to attack somebody without being able to see them (and in turn, they can't see you).
We can do this by using gravity to pull our projectile down on the other side of whatever it is we're firing over (duh), however lasers aren't affected by gravity (not quite, but close enough) and in turn demand line of sight fire.

You don't have to be too bright to realise that always being in a position where your enemy can see you isn't a great idea.

Aww, why did you have to be all logical and ruin the fun of lasers?

We don't need lasers anyway, we got more than enough weapons sadly.

Hahahah, we can't put it into society, unless its somebody else's society at a muzzle velocity of a thousand meters per second.

Exactly, the best part of it all is that the people affected are either there by choice (soldiers) or won't live long enough to complain about the radiation (everybody else).

In effect killing a person with a laser is just too humane. They die quickly, easily and no harm comes to anybody else outside the firing line. Where's the fun in that ay?

I'd say something about taking pleasure in killing... but this is not the place.

(Yeah, I know I said something anyways. Call me retarded if you want.)

They sell (commercially) laser apperati (sp?) that are powerful enough to burn wood, cut tape, and sauder. They're like 1,000 bucks for the top o' the line version. But they ARE available to the public.

We will get laser weapons, when we start having combat in space. Lasers are accurate and quick to reach the target and they produce no recoil so they are perfect for space. Hand used lasers might someday be used instead of sniper rifles, but otherwise we'll have projectile weapons.

Laser's won't be handheld, if they are, then they will be weak-ish, still enough to kill a man, but nothing like slicing a planet in half like a chainsaw.

LC made it, and it is awesome.

You do notice how much money it costs to repair the damages of a zombie outbreak? no!

Pfft, computer viruses and directed EMP weapons would be waaaaaay more useful in space combat than lasers.
