Railguns and/or coilguns are probably going to be the next big step in firearms. An M16 fires a bullet at about 1000 meters per second, a railgun can propel a similar projectile at 3500 meters per second with better accuracy. As a hand held weapon, they would not be particularly "game-breaking," but on a tank, ship, submarine, or perhaps an orbital station, could be deadly. No reason to blow a ship up when you can punch a hole straight through it. They could also be used to destroy enemy missiles, as a fairly small projectile could inflict substantial internal damage. |
