How close is America to a military-industrial complex or are we already 100% of the way there. I am writing a term paper about it and I would appreciate the feed back.

I don't know how much help i can be for your term paper. [probably none at all]

I don't think we are at that point yet, but over the next 20 years, we'll get closer until we reached that 100%.

The "iron triangle" exists insofar as there are three mutually dependant points, the civilian contractors, the military (pentagon side), and the elected officials who support both and in turn receive support from both. However, I don't think that it has evolved into the beast that Eisenhower was afraid of. I also don't foresee a time when the militaries influence would become undue; it appears to be waning right now despite the war on terrorism. The public sees the military as adequate in terms of power and so they don't support its expansion beyond its current ongoing operations. It would take the rise of another comparable power, at least a regional power in a vital area like asia or the middle east, before the public would provide the political will necessary for additional military growth beyond its current state. The longer we go without such a new threat the more military influence will wane. The only caveat I'd offer is that anti-terror units, covert-ops and the like, may stage an upsurge in influence if the war on terror continues into the next decade.

We better have one damnit. I would be pretty angry if the system I pay to protect me didn't have a supertight connection between those three factors. The Athenians did it, the British did it, we should be doing it!

It seems to me the government IS working against the public's intrest to create a steady flow of money into defense contractors pockets. Companies like Bell-Howell and Lockheed-Martin are already profiteering from what appears to be a permanent war economy. The president down right refuses to send more troops in to finish the job in either Afghanistan or Iraq. Perpetually at war, no end in sight. Look at the profits for big and "innovative" companies. We all know that Exxon had a killer year. Despite public outcry about the handling of the middle east, the Bush regime refuses to change policy. If we are not on the doorstep of MIC then we are far enough away to change it.

I would hope that Jim's post is sarcasm, becasuse that "system" exploits you, not protects you. The System reffered to makes money off your death, not your existence.

Oh, no, as a member of that system I'm protected. As a citizen, my job is to help the economy flow, pay my taxes, maybe even work in a factory making tanks. Because this system is so efficiant and powerful because it has such a streamlined weapons production system, I can't be touched. An enemy can't defeat us when we invade, let alone should they try and invade.
