Interesting that people would follow a suicidal text, as opposed to a peace loving book. I guess when you have been the target of decades of aggresion, you'll easily believe a religious text that tells you to kill (Hadith?) I've never seen one so I would not know what is contained... Is there any specific excerpt from these Hadith, that mirrors these violent actions, that you know of?

*research to follow*

I'm under the impression that the Islamic calender is different from the Christian/pagan calender. Could you guys give us an oversight of your calender system, the month names, and any holy days you might observe?

How is marriage done? I'm not sure if this has been asked and I'm not checking through 17 pages.

Is praying only done at certain times of the day or can it be done at any time?

BTW Mike, how much have you read? Quite a bit by the sounds of it.

Read the whole Qur'an in several translations (Pickthall, A. Yusuf Ali and one other whose name escapes me). Read all of al-Buqari (sp?) and some of the other major collections of Hadith. Can't recall the translators. Spent several months visiting the local mosque in Ottawa asking questions.

That plus your knowledge of the bible and countless others i imagine makes you the most credible person i know of when comes to discussing religion.

That plus your knowledge of the bible and countless others i imagine makes you the most credible person i know of when comes to discussing religion.

Started with the Bible in three translations (King James, New International, New Standard). Read the Qur'an several times in three translations as well (and started a course in Arabic to read it in native language -- my Arabic teacher inconveniently died on me :( ). Read lots of Baha'i scriptures -- all of it available in English, in fact. (It is not possible to read the complete set yet unless you understand both Farsi and Arabic.) Read an assortment of Hindu shastra: some assorted Vedas, the whole of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita (in two translations); other stuff along those lines. Investigated Shintoism closely, but only through third-party sources. Read Laozi (Taoism) and some Kongfuzi and descendents (Confucianism). Read the Yijing (Book of Changes) in a few translations and am currently struggling through it in a modern Chinese translation. Read several key sutras of Buddhism, mainly the Mahayana branch (the branch which resonates most with me) -- all in nondescript translation, unfortunately.

My conclusion from reading all of this?

  • Religion played a very important and valuable role in human psychology and society.
  • For some it still holds that important role.
  • Abrahamic faiths are the least pleasant religions on the face of the planet. They are painfully obviously the creations of people who had hard lives and hated the world they lived in in general and everybody on it in specific.
  • Of the Abrahamic faiths, the Baha'is are least offensive.
  • Hinduism is so complex it's not possible, in my opinion, to be a true Hindu if you weren't steeped in it from childhood.
  • Since Hinduism basically includes Buddhism, that comment also applies to Buddhism.
  • Confucianism is proof that optimistic worldviews lead inevitably to evil. One of the ironies of life is that being optimistic at heart leads to evil and being pessimistic at heart leads to good.
  • The Book of Changes was never meant to be understood. It reveals more about the person interpreting it than it does about reality.
  • Taoists (real ones -- not western faux-Taoists) are cool. Whacked out, but cool.

I haven't seen any not-so-nice Hadiths, Sinister, but I'll keep my eyes peeled. As for the calendar, it's based on the Lunar year and has twelve months, and important months to remember are Dhul-Hijja ( which occured around December I think, when people go to Hajj) and Ramadan ( the month of fasting). Other than that I can't tell you much more, I don't really keep track.

Flamingo, all you need is a mullah ( Muslim priest) to say some holy stuff then ask : Do you want to marry [ insert name], if both say yes, you're golden ( pretty much the same deal as Christians, except for the fact that men and women are often segregated during the ceremony, and the dudes dance around, flailing their swords..... tradition, don't ask). Ceremony isn't absolutely necessary, I think. The only thing I think that wouls be counted as sacred is something like the Glorious Book or something where Allah's name is the focal point ( it's Allah's name that makes sacred). Of course objects aren't sacred in a worshippy sort of way, as that would be idolatry.

Mike, just giving you a heads up to say, while I have no problem with you stating your dislike for Abrahammic faiths, I just want to make clear that I wouldn't like you to elaborate on your dislike. BTW, that's an impressive amount of research, man. I mean, damn...... BTW, do you judge the Abrahammic faiths solely through their Holy Books, or do you also study aspects like practice and people's attitude within that religion?

Can you sell your soul to Iblis? Can Iblis possess you?

Flamingo, yes he can posess you, but I don't think a complete take over your mind thing. Selling your soul, don't think so, but black magic is basically using the powers of the Devil, as far as I can see it. Of course I'm not entirely sure, maybe sabertooth has more insight.... BTW, where is he?

Metal, you sick weirdo.

Hell if I know. He pops up now and then. How can you ward off Iblis? Is there a prophecy that a war between Iblis and God is too happen in the future?
