This thread went downhill very quickly..... To answer the good doctor Jim's question, I need some elaboration, are you asking why my religion forbids sex before marriage ( actually, you can have sex if you're just engaged), or why I think it's wrong, or what? Falcon, I personally don't think sex is what makes a couple married more than anything else, marriage takes commitment, willingness to spend the rest of your lives together, I seriously don't think you need that for sleeping around. Do you think prostitutes should be considered every man's wife? Ceremonies for engagement do have some significance, though I don't think ceremony is absolutely necessary for engagement. For marriage, I don't view it necessary at all, all you need is a mullah ( Muslim priest) to say some holy stuff then ask : Do you want to marry [ insert name], if both say yes, you're golden ( pretty much the same deal as Christians, except for the fact that men and women are often segregated during the ceremony, and the dudes dance around, flailing their swords..... tradition, don't ask). Ask for Indigos, any sane person, regardless of religion, would think it a load of bull. The only stuff we believe in that one might call superstitious is belief in God ( Istaghfar Allah), black magic ( please don't call us backwards, I can explain, and no, I'm not bullshitting), and Djinn ( I'll need to ealborate on these too). In Qatar, I doubt you'll be punished by the government itself for being homo, people are gonna give a hard time anyways ( I might check on it anyways). In countries such as, say..... Afghanistan, anyone being homo will likely be executed. |

This is not a religious question but how is the everyday life overthere? If you can give a brief overview of the main systems and norms that would be greatly appriciated. |

No, you're married by the act of sex, every subsequent act with a woman other than the one married by the first act of sex would be an adulterous act. |

Maybe in your homeworld Bizarrowelt, but here in the reality the rest of us inhabit, marriage is a social institution, not just two people fucking. |

Hence my question. BTW, how do you define the point at which two people become married? |

Question? What question? There was a key ingredient missing in your so-called question: the question mark. (That and the various grammatical forms redundantly indicating a question.) This is, at least, true in the version of English we speak here in "reality". I'm sure things are different in Bizarrowelt. The point at which two people become married is the point where both they and society agree they're married. With varying levels of agreement depending on circumstance and surrounding society. For example by Western standards I was married one year ago on October 19th because that's when I got the certificate. By Chinese standards, however, I wasn't married until March 18th because that's when the ceremony was. |

Why does the religion forbid sex before engagement? You yourself can answer about your personal views as well, of course. |

...Matt was no exception to this. When he stood in the street and noticed his chest started to really hurt again, he made the decision to look down. He screamed like a grown man would scream when that grown man sees a laser burning his chest, and that is like a little girl... -From Super Naked Moose Man | |

Here is my original question: "Isn't sex what makes a married person married more than a ceremony or does the ceremony have some kind of significance?" Next time you try to carry on your vendetta against me you might try checking your facts. No, wait, just try checking your facts before you do anything, it'll save you a lot of embarassment.
My question regarded when Islamic religion considers a person married, hence the point of this thread, answering questions about Islam. I phrased my question in order to give greater clarity to just precisely what it was I'm asking. |

A clearly rhetorical one since it was followed up with a blatant statement of fact later on: " No, you're married by the act of sex, every subsequent act with a woman other than the one married by the first act of sex would be an adulterous act." Try reading your own forehead-smashing-against-the-keyboard before going off on "checking facts".
The thread drifted long ago. Claiming to be sticking to the original point of it is disingenuous at best without providing far clearer markers. Especially given that there seems to be absolutely zero Islam content in "No, you're married by the act of sex, every subsequent act with a woman other than the one married by the first act of sex would be an adulterous act." |

It was not rhetorical, the statement regarding one becoming married by the sex act was a further clarification of my question because Blackrider thought I meant that every act of sex would be a marriage.
The thread may have drifted or not, but my question was clearly on point as was the clarification of the initial question(which everyone except you seems to have understood was a clarification). Keep grasping at straws to cover up your own incompetance though, its quite amusing. |

At the point when they come before the state(meaning the one performing the marrige, pastor, judge, or whoever) and obtain the signed liscense. Sex has nothing to do with it on the actual being married part. Two people can have a one night affair and not be married. Also, two people can live togeather for years have ten kids and never by law be married. |

Uh...Seven years here in my state, after that you can get a certificate stating common law union...Not the same as marraige though...Tax differences. That is what it all boils down to in the states, is money. People marry for money one way or another. It's easier to buy a house, invcome tax breaks, bigger returns, so on and so forth. Are there any incentives to get married in Qatar, other than the avoidance of hell? *half-joke, I would like to know about incentives or the like, religious or otherwise* Do you exchange dowries of any kind in traditional Islam? |

Killer Bee - By that definition you could be married and never have had sex. Since you mentioned a pastor and a state official do you think that religious recognition of marriage is superior, inferior, or the same as state recognition of marriage? (remember, my original question is how does islam see marriage, ie when are you married before the eyes of God in Islam) |
