Some of the Chinese ones are pretty damned sweet-looking too. They're typically girls from the countryside who've figured out that they can earn a whole lot more for their families on their backs in the big cities than they can with bent backs over rice paddies. And unlike the prostitutes of North America, they don't look like disease-ridden, drug-addicted skeletons. They look, talk and act relatively normal. I have to say that I have a whole lot of curiosity about precisely how they do business in those red light "hairdresser" shops here. Just not enough curiosity to be worth the disease risk or, more recently, the divorce risk.

I am bored so I will play the devils advocate because this has become such a strongly pro-prostitution argument with only Sabertooth supporting the anti-prostitution side.
First of all consider how this feeds bad treatment of women (especialy if prostitution is legalised). If men know that they can get women whenever they want for a few bucks how will that affect their perception of women? They may recieve a low image of women that will stay with them for the rest of their lifes and bring them to beat their wives later on. Secondly by making an easy route to get commitment free sex readily available are we putting too much temptation on men in relationships? Doesn't prostitution just further degrade the sanctity of marriage? Prostitution also could bring STD's into relationships, infecting a wife and possibly any children who are born. |

Why are prostitutes always looked at as women only? In my opinion women are hornier than men. |

That is where the regulation part comes in. Right now there is prostitution whether it is legal or not and you can't make it safe so people are going to get hurt anyways. By legalizing it we can make sure that no one will get infected with STDs. It is the same as legalizing fight clubs. Since it is illegal there is no need to make safety regulations so people will get hurt but if you legalize and regulate it, you can make sure people will be safe. Prostitution can go both ways as well, just because a majority of prostitutes are women doesn't mean that there can't be male prostitutes. With violence, once again the regulation comes in. Right now I can go get an illegal prostitute and beat her and she can't do anything (unless she sends her pimp after me) but if we legalized it we can jail those who beat prostitutes. |

For any sufficiently broad definition of the word "support" of course....
Are women treated worse in Nevada than in, say, Texas? Are women treated worse in Germany than, say, Canada? Next objection....
It is well-documented that men are more prone to separating sex and emotion than women are. As such it is quite possible for men to be in deep, emotional relationships with one woman (a wife or girlfriend) while making use of other women--prostitutes--for physical gratification. Taking examples from Chinese lore (which I'm becoming slowly more familiar with for obvious reasons), the stories are full of men who love their wives to the point of grieving life-long after they die. And who yet frequent famous courtesans. There is no contradiction.
As the rash of wife-beatings in Nevada over the rest of the USA (or Germany over Canada/the USA/whatever) clearly demonstrates.
Whose definition of marriage? The modern European one? Yes. It degrades that. This marriage structure, however, is historically an abberant one. The subject of marriage through history and across culture is far more complicated than most people think. The "traditional nuclear family"? Isn't traditional. It's a very modern innovation.
By all accounts (I have no first-hand knowledge to bring to bear on this) the local doxies will simply not accept a customer without a condom. And that's here where prostitution is illegal on the books (but openly practiced). Legalised prostitution leaves open the possibility of regulated prostitution. Legal requirements for medical inspections. Legal requirements for "STD insurance" (for loss of income should STDs render you incapable of working). Legal requirements which would reduce the risk of STDs to far lower than what people are already doing. That's the thing. This isn't a choice between "no prostitution" or "legal prostitution". Every culture and country in the world has prostitution, even those countries where prostitution is punishable by death! It will always be there. Your choices are to legalise (and regulate) it or to have it unregulated and poisoning your society from within. But, hey! You're in good company for wanting to eliminate prostitution. <GODWIN>Hitler disapproved of the legalisation of prostitutes in 1920s Germany and sent prostitutes to concentration camps when he took over.</GODWIN> :ph43r: (Just kidding with the Hitler thing. It was just too funny to pass up. )
