It was more hypothetical because I was trying to get people to talk about the ethics and morality with cannibalism. I wanted to get both sides: how would you feel about eating other humans and how would you feel if other humans at you? |

I personally wouldn't have any problems with it- even when killing for food. As long as the one killed is willing and not in too much pain during the kill. -Dirk |

I used to spend hours espousing the merits of cannibalism in chatrooms. One time I was asked how I would feel if someone killed and ate my family. My answer was simply 'I would try to kill and eat them.' Nobody ever came up with any decent reason not to eat dead people. They just think it's gross. |

Exactly, the social norm of "cannibalism is wrong and disgusting" is so engrained in our heads that we can't or it is extremely hard to let go of. Many cultures look at cannibalism as a special event or a ritual if a family member dies. If our population does grow to such a number, we will have to do something so half the globe doesn't become one big cementary and with starvation at such a high rate, it may become a common practice among the poor. |

Eating people is like eating animals the only difference is that people are considered more alive than animals so we can't eat them. I personally wouldn't kill someone and eat them. But if somone was raised in a people farm to be served as food thats fine because thats all they knew. Eat, sleep, get slaughtered. Besides I think you would die if u ate a person, all the toxins in the human body... OH and I wouldn't sacrifice myself to the hungry. I need to live to take over the world, and I'll solve world hunger then and there. |

I wouldn't say more alive, but we see ourselves more in other humans than in other animals. |

Lets take a whole other view of cannibalism; not just survival or to cure world hunger, but ritualistic cannibalism. In some small tribes in today's world, mainly in Northern India, people carry on a tradition of eating the flesh of humans when they die as a form of religious practice. |

I have heard that the portion of one's brain concerned with inhabitions (like reservations against eating people) is canabalized (pardon the pun) when the body is faced with starvation. It takes some time (your body has to be really hungry to eat its own brain), but I've heard the notion of eating a person isn't that offending after a week or two. |

As long as those people have already died, I have no problem with it.
Are you saying that we have a part of our brain that tells us that not to be cannibals or did I misread you? If that is I would like to see something about that. I don't think that works because, as Altanese added, that some cultures cannibalize as a ritual. I'm pretty cannibalism is just a social no no with some biological forces holding us back but I could be wrong. |

I know wat Duncan is talking about; History Channel did a whole thing on it in a special about cannibalism. When faced with starvation, the body shuts down all non-vital functions. One of these which is shut down later on is the cerebral cortex. That part of the brain holds all the 'higher' things that make us human; morals, values, ethics, love, hate, etc, etc, etc. When it shuts down and starts to shrivel up, so to does the taboo of eating human flesh. |

Ahh, that is why they will murder eachother as well. I heard of a story where three guys were stranded on a raft in the Pacific Ocean and they were so hungry the voted on who they were going to kill and eat. |

Well even when faced with starvcation people can still be democratic. "OK so two votes Billy and one vote me....sorry Billy" "Weak" If somones dead (and knows I'm gonna eat them) or been raised on a people farm I would eat them.

There's nothing really wrong with it. Socially it's not acceptable, and nutrition wise it isn't the best, but it works in a pinch. There are still a few cultures that do it for religious purposes. |

...Matt was no exception to this. When he stood in the street and noticed his chest started to really hurt again, he made the decision to look down. He screamed like a grown man would scream when that grown man sees a laser burning his chest, and that is like a little girl... -From Super Naked Moose Man | |
