Chode brought it up and I thought it would be an excellent discussion topic. Personally, I think it has to do with coming off as nice when you are actually an asshole. For example, if I get into power by being an asshole and then act as though I was nice when I was in power. Every one of my dirty moves will be forgotten. Its not necessarily the one is an asshole that wins because a true asshole is never respected, but the asshole that comes off as nice will be respected which lets him/her win. My definition of nice is putting other peoples goals ahead of yours. *Note*-I purposely only have two choices and no in-betweens. |

People who arn't nice will come out ahead but mainly if they manipulate their way to the top and cover their rear so as to seem as though they had done nothing dirty. However people like to help people who are nice so.... |

[Expanding on my original statement: "Pure nice guys are simply men who are afraid to develop morals and beliefs of their own. So, they sit back and do everything they can do abide by the ideologies of others. Thus, they're utterly forgettable...."] There is an overwhelming amount of men attributing their social ineptitude to being "too nice". Please excuse the use of a tired and redundant phrase but... "Nice guys finish last." is a prime example of an over-used phrase that still retains validity. The reason? Nice guys are generally dull compared to people who express their opinions without the facade of morals. "Nice" guys are just men unwilling to develop their own personality, so they thrive in a dreamworld where being politically correct and adhering to other's morals actually brings positive progression. There is a time and a place for generosity and kindness, but when you choose that route at the wake of every decision-- you're lacking in any defining attribute. These individuals may not share the ineptitude of their peers, but they lack the distinction and character their peers excel in. Make sure when you're kind, it's appropriate and it's not forced. An actual nice guy wouldn't attempt to reinforce an false image of himself. |

Ya but most assholes burn out in the long run...and nice guys miss out on most of life. Really I think its all about respect. If you show me respect, I'll be nice to you. If you disrespect me, I'll be a complete asshole. |

I agree with Katastrof, pure assholes won't get any respect and fail miserably while nice guys will do the same. |

Depends on the situation. Sometimes people will compete for a higher paying job, a more respected position in a group or "clique", or even a presidental race. In everyone of these situations fits on how the true asshole will not get what he is looking for and how the nice person will usually fail as well. The one who plays his cards right will win, usually using a combination of being both nice and an asshole. Sorry, I didn't know that was directed at me. |

A-fucking-men! Can I hear another "Amen!" brothers!
I'll go a step further than this, even. Most self-identified "nice guys" who "finish last" aren't even very nice guys. They're typically passive-aggressive assholes instead of openly aggressive assholes which makes them truly unpleasant to deal with. Aggressive assholes can be interesting and usually have character traits which make up for them being aggressive assholes. Passive-aggressive assholes are never interesting and hardly ever have redeeming character traits. But they sure can whine about being nice guys! |

*shutters* I've had more than my share with these people. The ones that come off as nice guys when you meet them and then right when you least expect it, they will kick you in the nuts and run. It's pretty safe to say that I hate these people more than the "true" assholes because at least the true assholes are honest with themselves and I can just associate with them only when absolutely necessary. The other kind, passive-aggressive as [][][] refers, are the ones that want to be "true" assholes but don't have the traits to become one. They don't have the confidence, they are usually smaller in size, slower to think of insults, and overall less intimidating. They want to push people around but always end up on the losing side because of these traits and to get a fake feeling of confidence, they will give people cheap shots, usually to close friends while "true" assholes are usually more loyal to close friends, but not always. They will put down someone in a group to try to make themselves look big while saying they are nice in the same sentence. I despise these people at the highest level. The third kind of asshole are the people that aren't really assholes at all. They are the ones that will make fun of friends because that is their way of showing that they like you. These people act like older brothers, they will relentless give their friends shit but once someone else makes fun of his friend, he will turn apeshit on that guy. They are very loyal and actually want to help you out but usually are bad at showing it. Yet, these are the people who will usually "win" because they have the common sense to know when to turn it on and off. So what was your question Neo? |

Errr... what situation are we dealing with under which we're putting nice guys to the test. Again, you answered "it depends on the situation," which it does. |

To Zer0--It is fucking Chalz down to a fucking tee. I mainly agree with what [][][] said. I have no problem with sincere nice acts, but when people kiss-ass and it doesn't work, then they are idiots. I have no problem with kissing-ass for a purpose (a raise, sex, etc.) , but when you kiss-ass and you fail you are a huge loser. |
