I do not own any firearms, nor do I have a desire to. Yet I am completely fascinated by them. I find it difficult to get over.

The fact that they are engineered for a repellent purpose does not sway me from appreciating that engineering. They have purpose, functionality. Most machines and tools I feel the same way about, but for the most part aren't morally reprehensible. I believe life and the universe do not have any inherent meaning or special importance, which I guess is why I like things that are built, that work. For the same reason I like art. This gun thing, when considered, bothers me, but I can't seem to shake it. I don't know, maybe I just need to suffer some gun violence myself.

What's the score here? I don't want to be a crazy you-can-pry-it-from-my-cold-dead-hands gun nut, but is that what I'm on my way to becoming?

I don't think so, I don't own a gun, nor have the desire to own one for defencive purposes. I'm not pro violence and i am usually a pacifist. That being said i have tried shooting for recreational purposes and i like it.

oh and i should add, i am not a very good shot but i like using rifles more then pistols. The fact that people can shoot the same spot 60 times in a row (so it looks like they only shot 5 or 6 times) from 50 yards away using a cheap sight is amazing. They work well themselves and require quick reflexes and a very stable hand to provide great results.

Guns fascinate me as well but I don't plan on owning one for a few years, until I get a place of my own. I don't want one for solely defensive purposes but maybe the feeling of power I would get with holding a pistol. I wouldn't mind getting a nice sword as well.

Since I come from a family of Hillbillies, I've been raised around guns and shot them from the time I was barely in elementary school. I also have an attraction to guns and own three, a 9mm, a 22caliber rifle, and sort of own an SKS assult rifle(semi-automatic). I've learned through my dad, uncles and other friends of the family the proper way to shoot and maintain guns and don't see any problem with owning or shooting them. It's kind of a hobby, which does make you feel powerful holding a precise killing tool, but the responsibility to only use it to kill for defense is what seperates a person from an animal using it to benefit themselves.

Seems par for the course for a jackbooted fascist thug....Or do they normally prefer a Mace?

This would be par for the course for a southern upbringing, just replace the 9mm with a .357, and the 22 caliber with a 12 or 20 guage shotgun. I guess the Ohio valley isn't that far from the hills of the Blue Ridge. I think it's mandatory for all southern males to own a Chinese made SKS assault rifle. Gun safety and maintenance was drilled into me. I've NEVER "screwed" around with a weapon in my entire life, and would fully dismantle anyone who did, while in my prescence.

Amen to fellow hillbillies or mountain williams(educated hillbillies). We are many. My dad has a .357 and I have tried to get him to sell it to me for the past couple of years and he won't part with it. He's more like a walking ammunition stockpile. I've never seen someone own as many guns as he does. Anyone who breaks into my parents house, they better be packing and have backup. I agree with you full fold, if someone wants to be a dumbass while holding a gun around me, they will be looking for their teeth, gun safety has to be followed at all times. You can never fully predict what's going to happen.

Exactly why I want more training to be involved to be able to get a gun. While I consider myself a responsible person, I'm sure there are many things I would be naive with when handling guns that can only be known with some training.

I agree, a lot of it's from what you're taught and some of it's common sense. Gun safety classes are a very good thing. Even though I was raised around guns, I'm sure there are some things I could learn from a course.

I think gun safety is just like anything else. You just have to pay close attention at all times to do it properly, at all times. Like most other things, it is lost on the majority, because the majority lack discipline, concentration, and most valuable...common sense. You can take all the training you think will help, nothing will prepare you more for handling guns, than handling guns. Firing a weapon often can help take some of the mystique out of firearms. Of course, firing weapons often can also add gigantic ego, thus dwindling common sense, but I wholeheartedly believe you, or anyone else (on this website), should have little difficulty maintaining firearm safety, as we are all endowed with a great share of common sense.

I'm fascinated by guns for some reason (revolvers in particular), and I share Pierce's desire to also own a sword. At the moment, however, I possess merely a wooden one and an actual dagger.

I'm not into buying or ever using a gun, but I am fascinated in them like much of you are. My brother likes to build fake guns out of household items.

*cough* Join the military *cough* Now that that's out of my system...

I hate how people blame gun violence on the guns themselves. Up here in the great North we still have guns but you don't see us shooting each other. WHen ever a shooting occurs up here its like national news while in America its daily. Guns aren't the total blame for the violence problem, it's the people who use the guns that are the problem. (The people who don't give a shit about gun safety I mean.)

Oh, up here it isn't legal for us to shoot someone on our property.

I think gun safety is a HUGE issue, mostly with common sense... my friend used to own a air pistol and i had to give him a few lectures about common sense. Aparently nobody that he associates other then me knows not to leave any gun loaded when you put it away... or that you should not shoot it inside... sigh

Actually, I do already own a good pile of swords, all of which are fully forged weapons (as opposed to the cheap stainless steel decorative crap), for the same reason: I appreciate their function and design.
