I used to think swords were cool, then I realized that guns work better.

Although they belong to my father, I am in possession of 10 guns that I can shoot whenever I want. I enjoy hunting with them. I am not a bad shot with a shot gun, but I consider myself a very good long distance shooter. I don't hunt too much or even shoot that much, but I am a actually a you-can-pry-my-gun-from-my-cold-dead-hands kind of guy. But that doesn't really have to do with guns, it has to do with the 'right of rebellion.'

The problem with shooting deer from long range is it is hard to tell what you are shooting at. The deer I shot this year was about 350 yards away and standing on the edge of a cliff. I knew it was antler less and that is what my permit was for. I shot it and it fell off the cliff so I knew I'd hit it. When I got to the deer, it was only a buck of about about 150 lbs.

Actually, I do already own a good pile of swords, all of which are fully forged weapons (as opposed to the cheap stainless steel decorative crap), for the same reason: I appreciate their function and design.

I'll bet you spent a small fortune to buy your arsenal of real swords. I went to a mid-evil fair last summer and saw how much the resident blacksmiths were charging to make a sword, and decided not to buy one. I just couldn't afford to pay almost a thousand dollars for one, even though in a way it was worth it to have an actual forged ,hand-crafted sword.

They weren't that expensive. For example, I got a fully forged, differentially tempered folded steel straight-blade katana for ~US$300, including all shipping costs.

In the same way a Mercedes-Benz works better than a Ford Model T, but a Model T is still appreciated by collectors and greatly valued. Irrelevant anyway, since I don't use swords to destroy things.

I just really want a Mercedes real bad, but I don't want to drive it, and in fact I dislike the idea of combustion-engine vehicles and their effects entirely. I think the metaphor is still working.

Correct me if I'm wrong but were swords nearly as expensive in the middle ages as they are now? (With all the inflation and stuff considered)

That makes sense if they are forged. Traditional forgers will use the same techniques as they did 500 years ago so it only makes sense that they cost the same.

But there were more qualified blacksmiths.

One, did you spell "there" correctly cause that really confused me.

Two, I don't know what forgers do for a living but I'm sure they are just as good as in the middle ages. They might not be able to produce the extremely good ones but for antiques, they do just fine.

What I mean is that there were more (quantity) quality blacksmiths back then so it would be easier to find a sword.

Less demand less supply. I don't know all the economics of it but I don't think many people would buy a sword for over a grand.

You might be suprised Pierce. Look at it this way, if you buy a forged sword and you're into collecting them you've got a one of a kind sword, not a mass produced replica. It's kind of like comparing a Lamborghini to a Chevy.

My Boss has a friend who owns an ancient Samurai sword..He paid close to 20,000$ dollars for it at an antiques dealer....Three weeks later someone offered him 2.25 million for it. He declined.

I imagine if someone offered him 2.25 million for it, someone else will offer him more. Although, paying 20 grand for a sword and someone offered me 2 and a quarter million, I'd have taken the money and ran. That's a lot of cash to refuse....
