i recently found out that France and Britain considered a merger in the 1950s, the French Prime minister was an anglophile and admired Britain for its acconplishments and former empire and the help its efforts in WW2and asked if France could join the British Union and the U.K said they could but neither ever went through with it. this information has been available for over 50 years but it has just been sitting in an archive waiting to be re-discovered, the BBC recently found it. in the words of a British MP, "british people and French people are like an old married couple who say horrible things to each other but would never even dream of getting a divorce" |

I didn't know, but I think it would have been a shitty idea. Britain and France were competing all the time, uniting them would inevitably lead to a civil war and a breakup. -Dirk |

they also considered a union in 1939 so they could counteract the Nazis, Britain and France are two incredibly close countries, they work together on everything, it's quite possible such a union would last because the french are not very patriotic and they would join the U.K, it would not be a mutual merging, it would be like another state joining the U.S, the british wouldconsider their country the superior to france. |

It would've been interesting if they did unite in the '50s. Then, France would've gone to war with Iraq. |

And I recently found out that Turkey and Greece considered a merger in the 1930s, Atatürk and Venizelos thought of this, but never managed to do it due to the war a decade ago. They thought they were closer relatives to each other than Turkey is a relative to Middle East or Greece is to England or the rest of Europe. Strange, isn't it? But damnably true. Weird, ignored funny trivia. |

World's got too many countries may as well merge two relatively similar ones. The British and French can work well together- the Channel Tunnel and Concorde being two examples. The two countries could learn alot from each other- Britain has a great economy but crap public services, France has a crap economy byt great public services. |

A merger could well result in making both economy and public service aspects of both countries crap, you know? |

Of course, but you would have to plan the merger very very carefully and in a lot of detail to make sure we took advantage of the oppotunity. |

We may have missed that oppotunity but it gives us the greater oppotunity of the EU, I doubt the EU would have formed if everyone knew it would be dominated by a Anglo-French (or is the Franco-British?) union which with a population of over 100 million would tower over every other European nation in wealth and power. |

i suppose so, but at the moment the E.U is too fractured, the E.U will not have any real power until about 2020, when it will look like this![]() by this time, the Euro will have overtaken the dollar (because all current members of the E.U and some new members such as turkey will all be using Euros) and the E.U will have a GDP of over 15 trillion U.S.D, it will be alot more integrated and will have a economy that for all intensive purposes, is one entity. on the other hand though, you could say that 2 europian nations uniting could set the ball roling for all the rest to join in, a union between britain and France would seem quite tempting for the Germans to join, once they joined the italiands might want in, then the spanish etc etc. |

I agree. I mean, UK and france are cool with each other right now, but they have 1600 years of bad blood before that. Plus, the French would still consider themselves French, and the English would still be english. It would eventually split back down. Theyre two separate cultures. |

The 1600 years of bad blood is being forgotten, most people in Britain probably view Germany as Britain's traditional enemy despite the fact that before the world wars they were our natural allies and the French were our mortal enemy. |
