Child labor laws aren't as relaxed here as they are in the rest of the US. And besides, I've got better things to do than getting up at 6 AM while not having had enough sleep, just to got bringing newspapers which are full of crap to people for $20.- a month.

$20 a month?! I did a route once a week and got $35 a month and that was over five years ago.

Actually, it's pretty much the same.

Greed, self importance, fear of death.......a few reasons.  I agree, though, to live for ever wouldn't be as "neato" as it's cracked up to be.  Later in life when you're still in your prime, you'll realise that everyone you knew and loved is long since dead and buried, and you're all alone.

If it is a situation where you are the only person living forever then yes, it would suck. However, if it was a commonplace thing, chances are everyone will be doing it and most of the people you know will be around with you. I would like to live without the spectre of old age hanging over me. Unless you make yourself into some sort of Highlander figure then if you really got *that* bored with existence, you could kill yourself. It takes a lot for me to get bored though and I would welcome a radically extended lifespan because as someone already said, there is so much to see and do.

It's not actual death that scares me as much as slowly falling apart from ageing and having to depend on some stranger eventually to wipe my arse. If they can't cure ageing in my lifetime, I hope that I can afford a trip to the suicide clinic in Switzerland when I AM old.

Nice to finally get back on topic, I always seem to arrive late in these discussions.....anyway moving on.

Fear of death, an eternal blackness, with no thoughts or memories, not even enough energy left in your brain to be aware of the nothingness.....its a very scary thing and it makes us very curious and wanting for eternal life.

However, living forever is an impossible concept. Everything in the universe has a finite existence. Its just a proven fact of how things are. Its very sad and sometimes scary but its a fact you have to learn to live with. But I am also willing to entertain the idea of living forever.

I dont think the human mind can really wrap around the idea of forever and eternity. We have words for the concept, but to have a begginning with no end is not feasible. On a simpler scale, populations would explode out of control, people would act in selfish and destructive manners without fear for death. Bordom would be rampant. Without a death, life would be pointless. We just just exist and thats all. Maybe in a few thousand years you can live out all the self endulgant fantasies that you have always wanted. Maybe you could accomplish great things in more time. But in the realm of eternity, 1000 years or 100,000 years or 100 trillion years....it means nothing but a speck of sand. Eternity exist outside of time so your concept of time is flawed. And as you can see. the universe is destined to become a cold dark place of misery and lonliness. I reccommend you enjoy the time you have and just be ready for what lies beyond our understanding

In someways death may also hold all the answers to life. Wouldnt you feel like a big idiot holding on and clinging to life for so long and when you finally die a torturous death millions of years from now all your human friends are made of spiritual energy waiting on the other side of a demensional gap with all the answers you have been looking for in life. Think about it.

But really, there is not such thing as eternal life, not all the technology in the world would make that possible. So if you are eventually gonna die anyway and there is no avoiding that.....just let nature take its course and realize and humans are stupid creatures and maybe natures plan should be followed because it is wise.

Hang on a minute....isn't all that true anyway?

We probably would have a different understanding of life by the time we have the technology to live forever. So that means we will all be intellectuals when we live forever. Therefore we would have a functioning society.
