What is your philosophy on when people force you to read. I believe the great part of reading is how you can pick what you want. Being forced to read isn't great because you don't care about the topic and you don't want to retain the information. Books are a great source of information that will always live on.

I hate when teacher force you to read books that you don't like or that or on a different skill level. For example, everyone in my pod reads fantasy books like Eragon or Harry Poter. Great books, but not what I like, they don't make me think about life, they don't teach me any extremly deep lesan's, and I just don't like that genre. But sometimes I'm forced to read them anyway.

It seems they don't teach spelling either...

I have never come across a book that I had to read for school and liked. It's like the teachers pick the dull books on purpose so they can torture you. An example for me is the Civil War novel, "Killer Angels." It's interesting in parts, but overall, it's pretty dull. I'm totally against forced reading because kids always end up hating the book and not caring, so what are you teaching? Nothing, that's what.

Oh, snap.

PS: I'm also "reading" Killer Angels, and it sucks the proverbial balls.

When you're in school you should be forced to read some things or else what is the point of having directed education?

When you are forced to read something you will naturally look at it different (usually worse) than when you are not forced too.

Falcon is right though. A lot of books they choose pertain to the lesson they are teaching and a lot of those books are not going to be interesting. You just have to live with it.

Tche, it depends. I've gotten really into books that have been assigned (one of which may be my favorite book). It's not a matter of whether or not it's forced. It's a matter of whether or not you like it. The thing might be that teachers are set on the "classics" so much that they ignore what might appeal to today's "young adult" audience.

it doesn't matter at all if what i'm reading was mine or someone else's idea, and if it matters to YOU then you're probably just a resentful, anti-authority jackass... i've liked some books i've been assigned (life of pi) and hated some i've been assigned (catcher in the rye)... i've liked some books i've chosen on my own (hitler) and hated some i've chosen on my own (harry potter)...

As I look back, I do remember one book that I liked and was forced to read. That book was "Night" by Ellie Weisel. It actually taught me more about the Holocaust than I knew before. So, I guess in that rare case, force reading isn't bad.

You know, it's no surprise that "The Killer Angels" was denied to be published several times. Also, the guy who wrote it is dead. Probably from re-reading his work and getting bored to death.

reading is great. Being forced to BLOWS.
You will not care for the topic (unless they mention the word 'gun', 'bomb', 'car chase'
and 'organs splattered' in the same sentence/paragraph).

I'm currently reading The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers.

Wtf

You liked Night? To be fair, I didn't so much "read" it as "skimmed" it... Same thing.
