The irony is that by definition any form of gun is an EFP, as are shrapnel and anything that gets blown around by a mine.

Scary to think that with nuclear weapons we can turn entire cities (except the parts that vaporise) into EFPs.

EFPs employ an explosive charge to propel a metal slug against targets such as a passing vehicle.

So high is the projectile's velocity, it can even penetrate the armour of the US army's mighty Abrams battle tank.

EFPs are usually deployed in the same manner as roadside bombs and detonated by remote control.

They were once regarded as top secret military technology, but US forces in Iraq have uncovered insurgent cottage factories turning them out in large numbers.

What? A remote controlled modern Armor Piercer cannon? What's so special about it?

The prospect of a home made remote detonated bomb that can be made easily by rebel forces and can quite literaly feck up over 4 inches of solid armour dose belive me scare the tank crews and soldiers quite a dam bit

It's not a cannon, it's something much simpler - basically a land mine with the added bonus of a metal slug. The special thing about it is as low tech a weapon as a Molotov cocktail and capable of blowing up a tank worth millions to manufacture.

So much damage can be caused by rebels, who due to the remote detonation capability aren't even risking their own lives.

For those of you who where wondering how a wad of soft metal can penetrate hi-tech tank armor this might help you understand.

Americans
Need New
Technology

Spelled out for you, in bold letters. Where's our R&D War Team? Playing tennis?

If something this low-tech can take out expensive machinery, have we tried any new ideas?

Bah, i'm rambling.

Americans need BETTER technology. New technology isn't always better.

Either better technology or use technology similar to what's being used against us.

M16's are said to be the worst assault rifles ever made. The Americans need to get rid of this military/industry/government closed deals to stop shitty weapon deals being done.

AFAICD, the Americans in IRaq need the following things:

*better tank bottom armor
*better Humvee armor
*more accurate aiming and foe recognisation system
*to go back home so that spending gadzillions of dollars to defense budgets must be stopped. SOmeone MUST end this. The richest country of this world is being plundered by fat assholes!

Having been on the arsehole end of a couple of EFP's {Lost my hands and got mangled by them}They pretty much screw the tank right over hell...i was INSIDE the tank when they went off and came out minus my hands:{
I reckon their probably the best home made explosive since the Molotov though

Once again, low-tech ingenuity is winning out against expensive modern weapon systems... So, to recap, what are these things exactly? A sort of land mine-cannon hybrid?

Not...exactly.... It probably can't be considered a cannon because it fires only once and it has no range(the tank has to be right above it). It isn't a landmine in the conventional sense because it has to be manually detonated(mainly because the rebels don't know how to make a pressure trigger). On the other hand it's only a pile of explosives(any type of explosive can be used)buried in the ground with a(this is the important part) cone of soft metal(The metal cone doesn't need to be copper: steel, aluminum, magnesium and tin have also been used.)
To destroy tank armor with blast alone you need a really huge blast. But a much smaller one can do the job when you add to it a cone of metal. Basically this is how it works: explosive detonates. it heats the metal to several thousand degrees, compresses the metal in a really thin rod, propels the rod with extreme speed through the armor. In the best(possible) scenario the crew gets cut to shreds from shrapnel ,and possibly survives, the tank is damaged beyond repair. In the worst: the ammunition inside the tank gets hit and detonates, results:...

I am the end of the mortal scope
I am the trial of every soul
I am the tomb of every hope

Not...exactly....

Heh, yeah, my diet cola-addled (I wish I was joking) brain was just trying to remember what people had said on the things, and I didn't think that sounded QUITE right...

Well, those things sound suitably nasty. Especially with the potential for the detonation of the tank's on-board ammunition.
