(Hope I'm in the right place) So, I just want to know your opinions really! What causes eating disorders and why are they on the rise? Can the media be held solely responsible or are there other factors to be considered? What about pro-ana sites? Should these be viewed as a "healthy" (for want of a better word) way for anorexia to reach its logical conclusion, or should measures be taken to prevent such sites existing? Some argue that our perception of thin and fat are changing and that years ago a waist of 26 inches was thought to be quite large. What do people think of this? Is the treatment received by eating disorder sufferers sufficient? Should more or less be being done to help? Just tell me what you think, basically! Thanks |

As a former unipolar sufferer, I can already say that it's not just the media to blame. Today's society's stress level is also on the rise - and too much stress causes disorders in many person. That's also why other mental disorders (such as depression and autism) and drug (ab)use are on the rise. People simply can't handle the stress anymore. About pro-anorexia sites, I consider these to be not a cause of anorexia but their existence is caused by the rising number of anorexiacs. It's basic sociology; a minority that isn't accepted becomes bigger and bigger, until they start considering their unnacceptance unethical and start demanding acceptance. -Dirk |

LOTS of things. Firstly... the fact that womens sizes are stupid, women think they are fat (the ones i talk to) if they don't fit in a size 1!!!!! Not only that but they want to fit in a size 0, where the Smurf! do you go from there?? A child clothing store? Maybe if they made clothing for normal women then it would reduce the pressure to fit in what they do have. Ex... Stitches, they seem to sell clothing that only a few people i know can fit in. Secondly... Media, yes it is a factor, not the only one but a good one. We are bombarded constantly by what we "should" look like all the time. I don't like the way i look, and I am just barely healthy weight (metabolism not eating habits) How could we not be more affected as media becomes a part of our life more and more. Thirdly... Peer pressure, this has always and will always be with us, I hope i don't have to say anything about this.... Forth... Just general stress. People get depressed and think less about themselves, some go to extreme measures to fix it. |

My previous gf had a serious eating disorder until I convinced her to stop. Somehow she was anorexic and bulimic. Rarely ate and what she did eat didn't usually stay in her long. I think she could fit size 1 or 2 in pants. I try to discourage people from such disorders, it's just unhealthy. These are also the same girls who complain that their breasts are flat. That's what you get for not eating... |

Now THAT'S ridiculous. I hate to sound all right-wing and that, but I'm afraid that it might be the general media culture that is imposing these super-skinny values on girls. If you go out onto the street, the majority of people (men and women) do not resemble models or celebrities. However, these people are deluded by the 'celebrity/glamour is all' culture now pressed onto girls (in particular) from an extremely young age into thinking that this so-called 'ideal' is the only way that one can look, and anything else is shameful. This isn't helped by celebrity magazines ridiculing stars for showing the slightest sign of body fat. Perhaps an over-simplistic view. |

 Chocolate doesn't have the "bite" that the alcohol has......tried this with tequila before, but the floor and alcohol poisonong kicked my ass. But, I do agree with this. People need an "escape" from everyday life, alcohol is a popular choice. As far as eating disorders, the media's false image of the perfect woman should be a slap in everyone's face. Everyone makes a big deal about how "perfect" these anorexic models look......fucking disgusting. It's not about being yourself anymore, but about being what Hollywood thinks you should be. |

There's probably an attention seeking thing in there too. If you're really thin, everyone remarks upon in. People do a lot of daft things for attention. |

And some of the remarks include.....walking skeleton, crack addict, no curves, sickly, snake like. If a woman wants the wrong kind of attention, then being anorexic will make people comment on how disgusting being that thin is. I'm speaking on this using a guys point of view.....sickly skinny women just aren't attractive. |

These videos aren't really too much about eating disorders and more about a standard of beauty in general but they give the same point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZquECn6pmWA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li3mg1GrKe0...related&search= |
