Freedom of speech. Those 3 words have caused controversy around the world. So what do you guys think about it? Should there be any limitations on free speech? |

It depends on the application. If you're openly criticizing the government for bad policies(such as the U.S. government's invasion of Iraq) and you're not threatening or trying to coerce people into breaking the law, then it's fine. If you're using this right to spread hate and violence(see Fred Phelps) then that's stepping over the line, and should not be allowed. These are the only two examples I could think of at the moment, but they give the meaning of what I'm trying to say. This is, of course, just my opinion on the matter. |

But see thats the problem. Some people say free speech is excatly what it says whitch is free speech. Whitch means that your allowed to say anything to anyone at any time. In free speech, there are no red lines that your not allowed to cross. Example..Cartoons of Mohammed making him look like a terrorist, depicting Jesus as gay and sleeping with buddah, saying that Moses was a pot head ect... The extermly pro free speech that it's way past racism people are telling the majority of people to chose between total free speech or nothing. They say you cant be "in the middle" I am for free speech, whatever it might be, but my view is if your going to say somthing provocative, then you shouldent complain about the Aftermath. |

I believe that you should be able to say whatever you want, whenever you want without having to worry about the government comming after you, unless you threatend them or somebody else. (I think that thats what they ment when they wrote it.) I also think that companies have the right to fire employees that say things that are unacceptable and give the company a bad name. |

In my opinion, it should be entirely free, but they should hire a group of hitmen to kill whoever badmouths them. That'll learn 'em. |
| To hell with that. | |

My thoughts are the same. There are people who are idiots and try to say that their opinions are facts like Phelps. When you have a freedom of speach, that does not give you the green light to spew crap all over the place, it means that you have an opinion and should respect others opinion. |

I always get a kick out of reading the Little Red Book here. Mao, before he became the very kind of despot he was supposedly fighting, frequently said that nobody was above criticism and that anybody should be able to pass critical judgement on even the very highest of Party leaders. Then, of course, he started to have people who criticised him shot.... |

If your speech doesn't directly cause harm (Fire!), potentially threaten unlawful actions (I'm gonna kill you and your family!), or intentionally insight such unlawful behaviors (It's rebellion time!), then go nuts. The last two are a little shaky in my opinion, as it's the intention behind the words more than the words themselves that would make them cross the line, and such is difficult to prove. Unfortunately this means that even Phelps, neo-nazi's, and the KKK are covered by freedom of speech, so long as no actual threats are expounded. Such is the price of freedom. |

The funny thing is that in a lot of countries there are laws in effect which limit the constitutional right of Free Speech. For examples see above posts, Duncan has pretty much covered them all. I'm mostly sure that shouting (which technically is covered by Free Speech) : "OMG he's gotta a suicide vest under his jacket, run!" in the middle of an american airport is a criminal offense. (as it should be) There ought to be and are limits to what people should be allowed to say. |

Which of the following things if said repeatedly on this forum do you think should warrent a ban? -Juden sind untermensch -####### is a geh!!!!111 lolz!!!!!!1111one -Heil Hitler! -Stalin was a great man -Cho, Eric and Dylan were heroes! -Muslims worship satan! -Disabled people deserve to be so as they did bad things in previous lives -Deaths in the Iraq war are punishment from God for America's tolerance of abortion and homosexuality I'm guessing most people would say none deserve a ban even though the person would have to be a complete douchebag (I'm not enitrely sure what this American put-down means though) |

Well, technically they're all simply expressing an opinion,an offensive one, so I don't really think they're ban-worthy. |
