While reading the article, all I could think about would be the best way to do this. I kept thinking of a story where a woman had been submerged in freezing water and had essentially drowned. It wasn't until something like 25 minutes had gone by that they were able to finally resucitate her. It was such a slow process and they were astounded that she did not suffer from massive brain damage.

I guess this explains why she was plainly and simply, OK. Amazing shit.

It's mind boggling.
I know somebody who was dead for a week
and then suddenly came back to life.

A fascinating discovery and one that sounds extremely logical.

Those stories are common and well documented(not urban legends) and until now unexplainable.
It's a known fact that cold temperatures can slow or even completely stop biological reactions. If cells can really survive for hours without oxygen and actually die only because of the self-destruct mechanism initiated by "reperfusion"(he resumption of oxygen supply) this makes total sense. "The process known as apoptosis, the programmed death of abnormal cells" was probably slowed down or completely stopped by the freezing temperature and that is what allowed her to live.
Furthermore there was a statistic(can't find the link :( ) that claimed that the survival chance of people drowned for a considerable time in cold/freezing water is slightly higher than the one people have in moderately cool or warm.(For prolonged oxygen deprivation only)

This is some cool shit(no pun intended). Another possibility to consider, could research into this open up new doors into suspended animation or hibernation for long journeys through space?

Right. So, why couldn't this same principle be used for suspended animation?

The thing with suspened animation is that snap freezing your cells withLiquid Nitrogen damages them-near impossible to thaw out,but yes once they perfect the freezing side of it then this discovery would be practical for it i reckon

Apoptosis is a biological reaction done by the cells themselves. The main damage caused to the body when it is being frozen to the necessary -196 °C is a result of physical(as in physics, not body) processes.
Different damage caused by different things.

Right. So, why couldn't this same principle be used for suspended animation?

That brings a serious possibility.

Right. So that means we dont supply oxygen to dead people, right?
