Wealthy, yes but by no means the strongest. When war broke out the british empire was the largest the world had ever seen and it ruled over 1/4 of the world's population. This was when the empire was at it's very peak in power and influence and to protect its collosal over seas empire Britain had made the Largest and most powerful Navy on the Planet and its Airforce was second only to the Germans. France had its massive overseas empire as well and it had become very wealthy through its exploits of it colonies, due to their fear of the Germans the French had also built up their army and in 1939 their army was larger and better equipped than Americas. Germany had gone all out and made itself an armed forces that was probably over twice as powerful as the runner up and Japan had also been trying the same. America may have been rich but it wasn't the strongest country in the world by any means. America was not a superpower, it was less powerful than Britain and France and Germany at the time war broke out. and here is somthing you will all have to learn. Wealth does not neccesarily = power, America was Rich but it did not spend much of its new found wealth on its army, it has been a superpower from 1945 to the present day, before then it was just another country, not a superpower. Fact. and Nazi Germany and Japan could have defeated America, no question, with Japan attacking from the west and Germany from the East America would be forced to splity its army, airforce and Navy in half to fight both at the same time, leaving Germany to fight one half and japan to fight the other. America could not win such a war. |

I'm afraid that money does precisely equal power. It speaks volumes that the ENTIRE WORLD was reliant on the American economy being sound. If Britain were still the most powerful nation then it wouldn't have plunged into recession along with everyone else when the US stock market went under. Money = Power. Fact.

the worlds economies didn't crash because america's did, americas was just the first to go after all the major powers economies had been overheating for some time. stop being blindly patriotic, to claim that the entire world was completely reliant on the America economy is just plain stupid. in 1939 Britain was at its absoloute peak, the largest empire the world had ever seen, it was making massive amounts of money and it had massive amounts of world influence as it held many key strategic points such as the suez canal. heres a bit of info for ya, America wasn't even in the top 3 most powerful countries in the world and almost half of its population was under the poverty line. and money is just paper until you spend it on somthing. and your forgeting a key part of Americas History, at that time it was isolationist, meaning it didn't trade with other countries, meaning their is no possible way other countries could be reliant on America. |

Yep that's me, the guy who lives in Sussex and is blindly in love with America.... Uh...what? Fact is the Wall Street Crash did lead to the collapse of other industrialised economies. Britain was still powerful, yes, but WWII would finish that empire off, and France's too. WWI marked the onset of its decline. I'd say the UK was actually more powerful prior to WWI. And who said that wealth in America was evenly distributed? It wasn't then and it sure as hell isn't now. |

you are being far too pro-american, America was not a superpowr at that time, face it, WW1 marked the onset of the empires decline? is that why it peaked in 1939 then? and we are talking about pre-ww2 i already agreed that ww2 finished off the empires. and your forgeting a key part of Americas History, at that time it was isolationist, meaning it didn't trade with other countries, meaning their is no possible way other countries could be reliant on America. |

Trust me mate, I'm in no-way 'pro-American'. While the US didn't have an empire and the global reach of Britain, the UK was still reeling from the First World War, and America's economy was pivotal to the economic health of the world, as it is today. Don't forget the American boom-time of the '20s, when America had the industry and the gumption and its economy expanded ridiculously. America didn't need an empire to be powerful, although I'll agree it wasn't a 'superpower' per se until after WWII. |

WW2 was what gave America it's superpowerhood. its much easier to be a superpower when your main competition have just nearly destroyed themselves in a massive war. after WW2, Europe couldn't compete. Other countries couldn't have been so reliant on America , for the thrid time, it was isolationist. WW2 is the best thing that ever happened to America, it brought their country out of a Depression which had returned again even after roosevelts alphabet organisations and turned them into a superpower |

America was only 'isolationist' in terms of not getting involved in Europe's disputes and spats. It was still actively trading with them - just look at WW1, when they made a shitload of money from selling weapons to the allied nations. The inter-war years made America the most important economic power, while, yes, WW2 made it a true superpower. |

What?? So, the fact that Japan's only choice to go to war with the U.S. was due to the oil embargo placed on them doesn't count? Japan wasn't on some kind of "world conquest" like Hitler. Japan attacked the U.S. out of pure survival needs. Don't believe me? Check it out HERE. Japan was IN FACT very reliant on America....for it's very existance. |

You're right there Bee. While Japan had been on missions of conquest, they were pretty much limited to weak nations in their vicinity (i.e. China). For Japan to try and conquer the US would have been bonkers. It's something of a misconception that the infamous Pearl Harbo(u)r attack was entirely unprovoked. |

If it wasn't for the US Japan would have never even been in a position to attack the US. The Us industrialized that nation then tried to pull the carpet out from under them for doing the same things the US was doing. In Japan, in that time, no one was going to tell them how to do business (or genocide) or whatever. |

No. The Japenese did, in fact, think that war was inevitable. But, the reason why they thought this was because the U.S. had cut off their oil. They did it out of survival.....and a war with America was the ONLY way to survive. It had absolutley NOTHING to do with wanting to draw first blood. |

The Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor hoping to destroy the United States Pacific Fleet at anchor. Even though the Japanese knew that we had the potential to rebuild, they hoped that it would be fed the reinforcements in piecemeal and thus the Japanese Navy would be able to pick them apart in detail before it happened. It actually nearly happened during the Battle of Wake Island shortly after. Right, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because the U.S. enacted an embargo on all oil supplies to Japan. The reason for the embargo is because Japan was raping China. Our embargo cut-off the better part of Japan's resources, which crippled their economy and most importantly military. They didn't specifically want to go to war, they just wanted to cripple the United States so they could bring them to the bargaining table to negotiate expansion into Asia. Unfortunately, the Japanese didn't understand our way of thinking, which was "You bomb us, you declare war, and we pulverize you. Pheck negotiations." On the Japanese side of the equation, it was simply a misunderstanding about how to negotiate terms with the Americans. |

America is not the only country you canget oil from, yes it was a disaster when America stopped selling them oil but it wouldn't have caused their country to collapse. Another Thing your forgetting is that Japan had conquered Indonesia, Indonesia is an Opec Nation that is very rich in oil, the only trouble was it had very few oil stations or pumps built up which meant that japanese would have had to start building their own. claiming that japan relied on America for its very SURVIVAL is like saying that Italy was completely reliant on Britain for its very survival because Italy was powered by coal and it bought all of its coal from Britain. |
