Yes, I'm going to open up my very first post with a debate! :D

First, I'll say I think revolvers/bolt-actions/semi-autos should be allowed. This includes pistols, shotguns, and rifles. Keep explosives and machine guns banned, though. Require background checks and severely punish people who use them for crime.

I'll open up with my take on the whole "oppose the evil government" thing.

First off, the people rebelling don't even have to beat the government in terms of raw force. A rebellion itself on a large enough scale, or even the threat of one, would be reason for the government to tread carefully.

Some reasons armed rebellion would be bad for a government:

-Reduced workforce.
-Overseas military weakened, because it's occupied fighting the rebels.
-Government would be forced to destroy its own buildings in the course of fighting the rebels.
-Barabecuing your own people = bad foreign reputation.

What are your thoughts on this?

First, welcome!

Secondly, flash-boiling your own people is not as bad as it seems. After all, we're still arguing over Darfur, aren't we?

Gun control is a flawed idea at best, due to basic human nature. Take something away, and we want to make it ours. This attracts NOT the majority, but worse - the insane minority.

Mind you, regulating medicinal items is much easier than regulating shells, but hey.

If the government wants to take away my guns, they'd have to stop paying me first.

Again, welcome to Exit Mundi! You will die soon.

Pffft. Just taking away this and that won't do enough. Either take all or take none. Whats to stop me from just modifying my guns into one uber gun?
To hell with that.

Better yet, you take away guns from law abiding citizens and what do you have? Criminals still robbing people with GUNS. It isn't the decent person that robs the gas station with a legal gun, it's the "thug" that has an illegal gun that does it. And how would gun control stop this? It wouldn't. Criminals would STILL have guns.

I'm going to sidestep the debate rather neatly and point out that, even with an armed citizenry (something we don't have in the U of K), you still don't stand a chance of a successful coup if the military remains on the government's side - at least in the modern-day USA. They are simply trained and equipped in a vastly superior way, so even a great number of ordinary citizens wouldn't stand much of a chance.

That is what the French said, as well as the English Colonies.

Well it depends on how much the gov wants to keep it's power. Do they want it badly enough to kill a large group of armed citizens? Can they keep their power intact after killing a large group of citizens? Do they even believe they can lose their power? Will huberis single-handedly bring the power down? Who wants it more? The armed citizens or the government?

That's why I was careful to specifically refer to modern-day America. I personally think weapons have advanced too far for any number of citizenry to take on the US armed forces. However, should soldiers indeed decide that they don't want to kill ordinary folk any more, then yes, the government would be rather doomed.

Of course, there is no way of really telling all this without a, well, test. Any of you fancy trying it out? ;)

Gun control can be a good idea but it can have its backlashes.

Personally, I strongly believe that rifles and shotguns should be legal because of hunting, handguns I still favor legalized but require heavy restrictions and I want a ban on automatic and other high powered weapons.

I kinda like fast guns.

I agree, though.
Though, keep the Assult rifle legal.
3 shots, then you gotta shoot again, hence, it's generally slower.
You gotta reload frequently, too.

That sounds like a sensible solution for you lot in the near future.
