Alright hey exit mundi! *waves* woot. Alright so I figured I'd share my idea on what I figured would be a pretty scary scenario. I've heard and seen a fungus on youtube and other stuff. It's called Cordyceps Fungus or whatever, and what it does is infects insects and controls their brains into going up to the highest place they can think of then holding on tight, as the fungus bursts out of their head and or back and explodes out more spores. Now it said that it helps the jungle because the Cordyceps Fungus controls the most successful species..well thats kind of us isn't it? So what if this fungus moved onto humans? What if there was infact a whole range of sub species of fungus that turned not only humans but turned the whole place into a veriable zombie apocalypse scenario? Now your going to ask yourself "well why the frick would it be a zombie apocalypse" and I'd awnser "because it's better then a non zombie apocalypse" See I figure if it did move onto humans I have the strange notion that the fungus would move up into the brain and take control of the body while it slowly grew mushroom caps out of the humans/hosts skin covering it in fungus and other mushroomy textures. The host would long die after the fungus takes complete control of the host and begine attacking other things to spread the spore. Now why would it go and attack other people? Well see it like this. Your the fungus and you've decided through your limited built in intellegence that if you keep the body you'll be able to spread spores in greater quantity and farther, also if you start to attack other humans well theres an opertunity to spread the spore into there blood stream and prolong your species and mabye get a quick snack out of the person since your host's body is running low on flesh. So there ya go. Theres my little statment on that. If it doesn't belong in science and nature then..please move it to where it's suppose to go. I figured I'd put it in science and nature since fungus be related to science. |

That could be possible. And what even makes this possibility more scary is it would be in control long before we even knew anything about it. |

I have seen a fungi that I think sucks the juice from you. 'Shrooms were all along the back of a grasshoper, and it said it was a parasite. Never heard of the Zombie Fungi though. |

When you say "controls their brain" what do you mean by that? Does the insect just become sick, so their brain doesn't work, or is the fungus actualy smart enough to know that it's an insect and that it needs to move and spread. |

The fungus literally begines to control the brain. There are also worms that can control bugs to commit suicide by going out into the open and being eaten by somthing. The fungus I'm talking about is breathed in by bugs. The spore gets in their bodies and up to brain where I guess it slowly takes over and grows. When the spore gets big enough or whatever it takes control of the ants brain and mind controls the ant to the tallest place the ant can think of (if the ant knows so does the spore) and then it makes the ant clamp down on the plant. The spore then ethire kills the ant or the ant dies and the fungus burst out of it releasing spores to continue the process. The fungus doesn't think like an insect it thinks like a fungus...it just controls the insect.. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordyceps I've eaten those as chinese medicine! very good for your immune system, but too expensive, even more expensive than sea cucumbers unfortunately (in china). I think the fungus you guys are looking for is the ergot, which could produce chemicals that could be made into LSD. |

Ergot in itself also has some psychoactive properties (together with lots of non-psychoactive ones), although not the ones you'd eat it for: Ergotism -Dirk |

Thanks for sharing that info with us Gopher, it seems like a pretty plausible scenario. The fungi will enventually evolve, and quite possibly into a form that affects humans. And it would be scary not knowing if you have it or not. |

Your welcome, I thought it up after I watched the clips on youtube about zombies and saw the clips on the bbc about the creepy fungus...also the worms that make snails commit suicide by being eaten by birds so they can spread the worm to the birds. Also to whom it may consern is there any chance we can get a mention of this in the zombie apocalypse scenario? |
