Heavy metal-soaking gel

To test how well their new aerogel filtered out heavy metals, the researchers soaked 10 milligrams of it in water contaminated with mercury at 645 parts per million. The aerogel removed almost all of the mercury, reducing levels to .04 parts per million.

This is pretty cool, but I have a question. Couldn't the fact that we've discovered a new more effective way to soak up heavy metals make some of the facilities which produce them less cautious about where and how they dump them?

Pfft, I doubt they can get "less cautius" as in just dumping it anywhere, since they do that already. I'm curius as to the effects of this gel on the human body, though, since it will have to be used in rivers and lakes etc where we get our food and water from

Really? I guess the following list of rules and regulations(geared mainly towards dumping of hazardous materials in the sea or Great Lakes) is just a figment of my e-imagination:

Quote:

In 1972, the U.S. Congress passed the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (Ocean Dumping Act) and the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments (Clean Water Act) that, among other goals, prohibited the disposal of waste materials into the ocean, and regulated the discharge of wastes through pipelines into the ocean. The Ocean Dumping Act requires the federal review of all proposed operations involving the transportation of waste materials for the purpose of ocean dumping, and calls for an assessment of the potential environmental and human health impacts. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency implement the permit programs associated with these laws.

Quote:

The Ocean Dumping Ban Act of 1988 significantly amended portions of the 1972 Ocean Dumping Act, and banned ocean dumping of municipal sewage sludge and industrial wastes (with limited exceptions) by phased target dates. The disposal of sewage sludge in waters off New York City was a major motivation for its enactment. Ocean disposal of sewage sludge and industrial waste was totally banned after 1991. Narrow exceptions were created for certain U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge materials that occasionally are deposited offshore. Dredging is necessary to maintain navigation routes for trade and national defense. Consequently, allowable ocean dumping in the United States since 1991 has essentially been limited to dredge material and fish wastes.

Quote:

As per the U.S. regulations, the dumping of industrial wastes, radioactive wastes, warfare agents (chemical or biological), sewage, and incineration at sea are directly prohibited. Moreover, the ocean disposal of other waste materials containing greater than trace amounts of certain chemicals is strictly prohibited. Allowed under strictly regulated conditions are the ocean disposal of relatively uncontaminated dredged material (harbor sediments), geologic material, and some fish waste; burial at sea; and ship disposal.

Now, with a discovery of this new material that has the ability to soak up heavy metals, will there continue to be concentrated efforts to keep laws in effect similar to these?

Which makes this stuff kind of pointless. What's next, throw regulations about dumping out and just fill the coastlines and Great Lakes with this gel to counter-effect contamination?

Well, not everyone obeys the law, and that's as far as I'm willing to go

I imagine with the EPA breathing down your throat, you'd go further than that... Does it stop illegal dumping? No, not always. But, imagine how bad our environment would be without these kinds of laws and regulations.

dude, the world is not america, you haven't been to any of these places, instead relying only on a few documents and texts which describe the law, which, in actual fact, doesn't tell you all that much about how they're being obeyed.

DUDE, 1) how do you know where I've been or what I've seen 2) where exactley have YOU been. I'm not debating you on the whole fucking world, just the little space I live in. And facts are facts.... Also, don't get bent out of shape at me for ruining your shit. Deal with it.

All I'm saying is that this new technology would most likely be used in areas all over the world, and that america is just a small part of it, and a lot of those areas are developing countries, which care little for the environment now anyway, and so even if this gel makes a law that says you can now dump mercury anywhere, it wouldn't make much of a difference for those countries, and for developed countries like america, they wouldn't do this because they have little need to, since they don't need to make so many new factories to pump out heavy metals.

Does Copper qualify as a heavy metal?

I'm not chemistry savvy. But I don't think a gel foam could possibly be as harmful as the stuff they found in my county's water supply last month.

Taken directly from my city water bill: All theses substances had a percentage behind it per x amount of water

Fecal coliform- enough for upset stomach-diarhea
Copper-16%
Flouride-.068%
A slew of chemicals including anything you can find in city run-off....anything. Most of which can cause anything from nausea to cancer
And six different carcinogens KNOWN to cause cancer.

So yes please, give me the fucking foam gel shit.

Well, copper is a (relatively) unreactive metal, although it forms oxides, it's probably not that harmful to your body compared to most other metals. But then, I don't think copper reacts to hydrochloric acid (I'm not sure, check it up somewhere), so in large enough amounts it will just stay in your stomach forever, unless it comes out the other end.

1. I don't have to know where the fuck you've been all those years but your quotations only tell me about america.

Hey, dipshit, this is what you said in an earlier post after I quoted some American regulations:

gay

you haven't been to any of these places,

So, don't get all bent out of shape for me calling you out. Besides, where the fuck were you talking about in the first place...

gay

2. where the fuck have I been? let's see, china, UK, italy, france to name a few, satisfied?

Oreally? No, not satisfied, because I really don't give a shit. I guess you want a cookie or something.

gay

facts are facts? don't give me your vague shit that doesn't mean anything

Again, this was your statement:

gay

Pfft, I doubt they can get "less cautius" as in just dumping it anywhere, since they do that already.

So, maybe YOU were being vague. Where the fuck were you talking about? I gave you links about laws and regulations that PROVED YOUR LITTLE BITTER ASS WRONG, no matter where they were from, since you never specified.

gay

Also, you're not ruining my "shit" as you call it

I pretty much did. Now, if you want to be serious about this and carry on a real debate, I'll do it. But, if you want to continue being angry and sarcastic, I'll do that too. The ball's in your hands.

Obviously before... and thanks for letting me know why people from the South are known for their bad dental health. It's the water!
