I think it's time we revisit the future of teleportation. I recall reading an article where scientists had successfully teleported a pencil, the only reason why humans can't teleport is because it created a new pencil when the atoms rearranged themselves. And you wouldn't want to create a new you every time you teleported!
Has anyone read about this subject lately? It's always been an interesting topic. |

We have brushed upon this topic before- http://z13.invisionfree.com/Exit_Mundi_For...owtopic=434&hl= But no matter, it's always worth talking about it again. I would love it if teleportation was a reality. Instead of walking up the stairs, just teleport! |

A few articles on the matter Link to the pencil? I mean as far as I know right now that would be significant considering how much work it us for us to do a single particle, much less a complex structure of them. Anyways, interesting read, but I don't think teleportation will ever be failsafe enough to use by the common person. The military on the other foot... Well, not only structural issues, but what about disruptions? Light is currently used. The whole concept and current application seems very fragile. |

I searched for the link to the story I read with no avail...yet. And I know it's been discussed before, but a lot has happened between know and then. As for teleportation in daily life, it may be unhealthy (lost excersize), I would think it would takeover the airline business. |

I doubt teleportation will happen. There are simple too many atoms in the body to arrange into "us" in an efficient and time-saving manner. However, you could steer the conversation into whether or not the teleported "us" would still be "us." |

I would say no, because it is not only atoms that make up "us". Our personality, interestes, and skills, are not determined by a simple atom. If that were true, neurologists would be able to change someone's personality. |

Ah, but you have to recognize the complex task before them. They can't because we haven't deciphered all of the workings of the human mind. |

I think that the teleported us would still be us, the only thing that makes up our conscious existence is the complex interplay of neurons in the brain. Our personality is built upon years of observation, idolization, and mimicry of people around us. Therefore if you were able to teleport and reconstruct perfectly a person’s brain (perfectly note), memories and all, the person who started out would be the same person who arrived. This also implies that if you were able to just duplicate a person so there were two people with the exact same brain you would have two people with the same uninterrupted flow of consciousness from birth to the moment they saw the other standing in the lab. |

If you were copied exactly the same you would technically be exactly alike. We do not know how free will works so many things could happen but according to logic, we should be the same exact person. If our conscious mind actually did exist out of the physical realm of the universe than we would have major problems. |

I was implying that we are yet to realize how the mind works by saying it wasn't that simple. And would it be the same you, it could be argued either way, I wish I could find that article. I did find this: http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/05/danish-...-teleportation/ It's more about duplication than teleportation, but I learned a new word: doppelganger- (n) A ghostly double of a living person that haunts its living counterpart |

The greatest issue would be a "General 404 error" type of deal. Its like life saying tough luck but you dont exist anymore because the teleporter was stupid today. |

A teleported version of a person has to be considered the same person. They would be exactly alike. All their memories would be there. All their thoughts would be the same. |

That does raise an interesting issue though: If you would teleport yourself, would you die and is the teleported you actually a clone or is it really you? And would you still feel like being that person? -Dirk |

Depends on how you view conciousness. If free will is an illusion then it wouldn't matter since there is no permanent conciousness attached to your specific body and the new body would just pick up where the other left off. If there is free will and we do have some sort of permanent conciousness then we would probably would "die". |
