We have all seen sci-fi movies and shit, but how will the world be like 50 years from now? Do YOU believe the world will have flying cars, teleportation devices, genetically advanced humans, robots, people walking around in spandex suits with huge brains in mere 50 years ? Personally I don't think the world will change that much, sure we will have much faster (maybe superfast) computers and pretty high tech cars, maybe even fridges that can talk. But i don't think we'll have household robots etc. What is your vision for the future ? |

You're quite the pessimist aren't you ? <_< To clarify: How more advanced do you think our technology be in 50 years? (if by some freak accident none of this : http://www.exitmundi.nl/blackholes_lab.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/oilcrash.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/graygoo.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/gmfood.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/Maya.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/vacuum.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/insanity.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/Aligment.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/borg.htm http://www.exitmundi.nl/Robots.htm happened) Edit: Including all the other Exit Mundi scenarios of doom. |

As far as I know, exotic expectations of the future never come true. I know a book from the 90's which predicts that everyone would have paintings on LCD screens hanging in their houses by 2001. It's 2007, and those things are there, but they're so expensive that hardly anyone can afford them to buy them, and those few who can prefer to have real paintings. That book also predicted that by 2005 the fish sector would collapse. Which is easily disproven by the fact that last time I had fish for dinner was less than a month ago and we didn't have to catch it ourselves. Basically, I think that the only things that would really change are faster computers, we'll have new car styling and globalism would cause many rich countries to merge, possibly meaning that Europe would become a recognized 51st state instead of a de facto one. EDIT: Oh, and we'll have had WW3 and oil will cost $300.- a barrel. |

Pro-Future: advances in medicine, physics, neurophysiology, you name it. Discoveries in space. More of a swing towards chemistry, astronomy, and away from biology (not a pro or a con, just my idea). Faster everything. Anti-Future: WW3. Prices. War. Diaspora during war. Run-down of great countries. Biological warfare. Genetic engineering. Plague. |

Ugh, there was a show on the TV about this a week or so ago, it was utter rubbish. I myself have a book from the 60's which said that in 2001 we'd have the first child born on the moon, and that we've be living in fancy space-domes and junk. Flying cars are illogical, the energy demand would be enormous and you can just as easily get to your destination using ordinary vechiles. Ambulances and busses could be a different matter, but then again, why not use helicopters? My opinion on the robots is a little blurry, I doubt AI will be achieved very soon, but robots will be doing more complex jobs of course. Artificial limbs will probably become a wee bit more common. The total amount of scientific knowledge and stuff will have increased quite a bit, but whether much of it is put in to practice is unlikely. The world ends in 2012 so who gives a damn anyway?

This may be a counter-argument against my first post, but what the hell: I think everything in/about/around IT will evolve fast, the computer and especially the internet. 50 years in IT is ALOT. Just look at computer games from the 90's vs. now. VR games in 20 years anyone ? |

Well, to be honest I don't see that much of a difference. Especially not in games for consoles. Various games for consoles from the 90s were in 3D. The only things that really changed are the graphics which have been refined and games for the PC superseding those for consoles. |

Yes, virtual reality games (not things like in The Matrix, simply ones with screen helmets, movement sensors, treadmills and the like) will be much more developed in the next few decades, but they will either be very expensive or they'll be banned due to student shootings and used only as a military rescourse. It would take far longer for them to become household items. |

Well what about Pong vs. Halo 3 ? I read somewhere that IT as a line of work (computer programmers ect.) is growing exponentially, and it should continue since computer games is a billion dollar industry. |

Pong and Halo 3 are still the same concept. They both use the same basis or a variation of it. It's all just refinement

Refinements is some heavy shit too! How much "refinement" does the games of today to become VR? With VR i mean VR like Myrrk suggested :

I think that with current technology it's already possible, it's just a matter of actually making such a system. However, it would probably only be used for army training and such for years because it would be way to expensive for any average citizen to afford. Not to mention the sheer power and space it would consume. |

Oh yes, there probably is one or two that are used for training in the present time. It's just the matter of making it affordable and good-lookin'. |

And the matter of then making it as unrealistic as possible, to stop it from being accused of sparking violence in the youth population. Such is progress. |
