The book's called Northern Lights and it's about a 12-year old girl who's travelled to the pole while living with gyptians, hiring armoured polar bears and escaping from her own mother.

Sounds crap? I thought so too, until I discovered the atheist part of it.

Go read/watch the book/film, I highly recommend it for its atheistic themes.

Awesome child propaganda for all children aged 13 and under.

I would see it because it looks good, I can care less about the "atheist propaganda."

The books are rather good - I remember reading them at the turn of the century (oh, for the novelty of saying that when it isn't really that long ago). Apparently the film is aesthetically-focused, stripping much of the depth from the tale. Shame they gave it the American name of The Golden Compass as well - I guess it makes sense given the other titles, but 'Northern Lights' just coveys so much more, y'know? Anyway, the movie's sub-Narnia apparently, so it must be pretty shite.

Actually Pullman (the author) was very anti-Narnia, because of the christian propaganda in it. So the "Dark Materials" (as the trilogy is called, the golden compass is only the first book) is the opposite of Narnia. I like the books because: there are parallel universes, very sharp knifes, evil church, evil god, evil priests, and ice bears with guns. But mostly because

SPOILER!!!!
tehy klil god in the end of book three :must pay troll to cross:

The anti-religion/catholicism theme is the only reason I read the book

I prefer the first Chronicles of Narnia movie in which the beavers were played by people in beaver costumes.

I want to see it solely because Daniel Craig plays some sort of hardass arctic explorer/scientist dude. Although I heard they cut the end of the book out of the movie because it would have been 'too bleak'.

lol so? it leads right into the next movie which everyone will be rearing to see....

in 2009.

See, it'll lose all of the audience by then. The kids would've grown up from 12 to 14, and in the movie the kid is still 12, so it would be a major flop.
