Ahoy hoy exit mundians...I'm doing my part and trying to foster some fucking community participation in this dieing forum. So here's my question: Will humanity ever get over the uncanny valley and create a stock of perfect looking androids for retale to humans? What kind of issues will this bring to humanity? Will it be around in our time? I see it sort of as the anime chobbit scenario; everyone prefers the company of androids who are beautiful and have MUCH better temperment then real people. Everyone ontop of that can own and buy an android as they're redibly available (like computers). But what do you guys think? |

Yes, I think that we will develope androids that interact with us to almost a perfect level. However, this is where we will cease to be a species. Perfection with interaction to us shouldn't be our ultimate goal. I'm thinking of an "I Robot" scenario. We make robots or androids that start to make decisions for us and ultimatley decide it's best for us if they end us. Sometimes, being human with all of our imperfections is what keeps us going as a species..... I don't think that this will happen in our lifetime, probably during our grandchildren's. |

Say you have three androids: pretty one, ugly one, and Stumpy one. Everyone's going to want the first and the last, no one is going to go towards the middle. Before we know it, everyone has these amazing androids that do everything for them. At this point, not only is our existence pointless but there's no motivation to do anything. We have doctor-bots, and nurse-bots, and God knows what. I think one's main goal in life should be to accomplish all of these chores while doing something that benefits society, and with these androids that would be near impossible, as Bee mentioned, because the androids would make the decisions for you. That's not too swell. Who wants to be a doctor when we've got doctor-bots? Look at I Robot as Bee stated. And The Shins mention androids in their song Australia, but it's not awfully relevant to the situation .Gopher I applaud you and hopefully some people will notice the thread

But if we don't have to take care of the boring stuff, wouldn't that make a society of artists, musicians and shit like that? |

Not really. Whether it's boring or not, we need to make day to day decisions for ourlelves. And we're talking about using androids for making medical decisions here. During surgery, an android could run across a problem which logically there may not be a solution for but a surgeon would think of something which may be a little outside the lines and it could save a life. If we don't have to use our brains or creativity for ourselves, how would we become great artists? |

Yes and no Yes they will make them, no I dont think they will have AI You cant program a computer to not listen to its programming so in the end all of its decisions have been pre-written. True AI means the robot can do something against all the principles it was designed with for no better reason then it can. Then again, humans might have been pre-programmed in their own way so maybe its impossible. |

Probably more chance of nanotechnology being able to replicate itself but not ending up as 'grey goo' covering the planet. |

Well I think that at least By 2014 we might have a clunky not perfected Android. We're already halfway There you know, with factory robots and things like that. |

We're already pretty close to actual cyborgs. Lost limbs are being replaced by robotic parts hooked up to our nervous system, and the Japanese are making huge progress in creating very life-like robots. It's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN. |

Yeah, but will we ever cross the uncanny valley? All those droids in Japan look like T-600s instead of T-800s which is what we want, amirite? |

Cyborgs are part human, part machine. So handicapped people can be "normal" again. This doesn't just have to apply to handicaps. Humans can "upgrade" themselves. A stronger mechanical arm rather than the weaker flesh one. Not that it would be for the better. Widespread of androids could put a lot of people out of jobs. People would prefer perfect androids over a faulty people. Maybe people would rather prefer mechanical partners, perfect in every physical aspect that they don't need other humans. But as longs as we don't create artificial intelligence, humans would still be in control. |

Humans are already treating many robots as living creatures. 6 Shocking Ways Robots Are Already Becoming Human Also: Sergeant bomb disposer Two interesting stories reveal that uncanny valley is not the issue. First robot is a bomb disposal unit, which stopped working on the field after which the replacement got blown to pieces. "It's like he shut down because he knew something bad would happen." Then that robot was given several - as in more than one - purple hearts and was promoted to rank of sergeant. That's right, a collection of metal and wires could technically give orders to flesh and blood human soldiers. It's operators actually took that robot on a fishing trip, because they thought it needed a vacation. Another story - and the one that is more interesting to me - is the story of a mine stomper robot. It was basically a centipede robot sent to clear a mine field. The idea was that robot stepped on a mine, got a leg blown off and then readjusted the remaining legs to keep moving ahead. The colonel that ordered the test cancelled the whole thing, when the robot was on its last leg, because he couldn't stand watching the burnt and ragged robot dragging itself pitifully forward on its last leg. According to him it was "inhuman" treatment. These two examples show that people have no trouble whatsoever at treating machines as living creatures. How many times you have yelled at your computer for losing a file you were just working on or freezing in the middle of a good game? I claim that it is a basic human nature to anthropomorphise things. I mean that's the whole reason Aesop made those animal fairy tales and the reason why people started worshiping spirits of various places where wind wailed loudly and so on. People treat naturally anything as living entity - and I think that's the default prosedure for them to act. So, uncanny valley (the area of humanlike appearance that creeps out people) is not going to be a problem, because humans can treat anything as people. The robots inside the actual uncanny valley will simply be treated as unpleasent people. And yes, we shall see robots that will cross the uncanny valley to the other side and be confused with real people. It just won't matter in regards to humanlike treatment, because it is already being done. |
