Alyce kicks at a box absently, wrinkling her nose up at the small stack of boxes dropped off by the moving company before turning to look at Kaden with a small shrug “I don’t think I even want half of this….” She bends down flipping the open and pulls out a small red leather bound journal, turning it over in her hands, as she does so; a photograph slips out and lands on the floor.

Kaden picks it up turning it over in his hands to show a small blonde child, her long hair in pigtails, staring at the camera in an irritated way… She has grass stains on her knees and on her elbows, which stick out as she folds her arms over her chest… Alyce reaches out to grab it from him as he starts laughing, she turns slightly pink, making to grab it again as he pulls it away.

“Shut up.” She blushes before he can say anything…. As he looks at the picture again he notices a large, old building in the background; it doesn’t look like an apartment building or a school and there are bars on the tiny distant windows. As he is studying the photo she plucks it from his hand and pushes it back inside the journal with an embarrassed grin.

“Is this you babe?” He said with a laugh as he watched her. He noticed that she was a pink shade. He didn’t understand why she would be embarrassed. “Baby, you look so damn cute..” He laughs again, harder this time. “Where was this taken? You’re so freaking adorable..” He said as he looked over towards her.

She hesitates for a moment, before sliding the photograph back out of the book… Dropping the book into the open box she walks over to him, holding the photo out between them as she moves to stand beside him she stares at it for a long moment… “This is where I grew up.” She sighs, shaking her head a little before tapping the photo, right on the image of a man in the distance in a long overcoat… The photo is old and the image is blurry so you can’t really make out his face… “That’s my Grandfather, the one who raised me til I was 9…”

She turns the photo over, looking at the faded scrawled inscription on the back. “This was taken less than a year before…” She turns it back over, looking at it again… “Before I had to go and live with my Dad.” She swallows hard, not actually wanting to say the words. She turns slightly on the spot now, looking at Kaden with a long, unblinking glance…

“He was a state psychiatrist… We… Lived at the facility.” She swallows hard again, tilting her head to the side just a little to gauge his reaction.

He gets a confused look on to his face, “Not quite..understanding what you’re telling me babe..Now, I understand you lived with your Grandfather until the age of nine and this was taken at the age of eight..but you lost me where you said, you lived at the facility..” He swallows hard, “This isn’t going to be something I am going to like, is it..” He asked with a worrisome tone in his voice as he looked over his expression.

“Either way, going to love you and care about you regardless..and if you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine too. But..” He shakes his head as he looks down at the picture.. She places a hand on his cheek, staring into his eyes for a second before she shakes her head… “No.. I…” She glances back at the photograph letting out a shaky breath, before looking back into his eyes.

“My mother disappeared within… Hours of me being born and my grandfather was a live in at a state facility for…” She searched for the words, obviously trying to find something that would be less harsh than the cold reality.. “People not fit for unsupervised socialising…” She half shrugged hoping he got her point as she slid her hand down onto his shoulder, leaning into him slightly…

“The only option he had was to take me, or let me go into the system and..” She looks down for a second steadying her breath… “Maybe he should have just let me go but he didn’t and so - I had to live there too…” She looks back up at Kaden and bites her lip, laughing a small nervous laugh.

“I didn’t live with the residents or anything, we had a small little house on the outskirts of the facility.. I didn’t even SEE anyone else until I was five or six… It was only really when I went to school that I even realised anything was different about it…” Her cheeks flush with a violent shade of red as she looks down at her feet again…

“Of course… All the other kids and their parents knew it was different. Who wants to invite over the kid from the looney bin right?” She scoffed slightly and shook her head… “I lived there, til I was nine…” She glanced back up at Kaden, tears springing at the sides of her eyes as she waited for him to say something…

A smile forms over his face slowly, “Baby..I love you and I love you being a crazy woman..” He laughs some as he tries to lighten the mood some. “I wouldn’t have you any other way, fuck all them though for real. Look at you now..” He took her hands into his as he looks her in the eyes.

“That’s the past yes it’s apart of you..but this is now babe, and I’m here. I’m never going to let you feel like that ever again, I will kill someone before that would happen.” He smiles as he laughs some, “Kinda like the Dirty Dancing saying, ‘Nobody puts baby in a corner..’. No one’s going to hurt MY baby” He than smiles again, he really hopes that would crack a smile.

She smiles, looking up at him as her hand moves back to his cheek, stroking his cheekbone softly as she takes a moment just to look at him… “I love you too….” She smiles again, before taking a deep breath “And that’s why I need to tell you this… I need to tell you, because I have never… Never told anyone…” The photograph slips from her fingers as she places her other hand on his shoulder, the one from his cheek slipping to the opposing one as though she holds onto him for strength.

“I was there… I was in his office.” She swallows hard, a tear trickles down her cheek as she bites back on her jaw, forcing herself to say something she has never said aloud… “I heard him say it was MY fault…” She drops her voice to almost a whisper “That was the last thing I ever heard him say - that he was giving up… And it was all.. My fault.” She glances at the photograph on the floor, staring into the eyes of the Alyce in the picture for a long moment…

“And even though I know he was.. Drunk and Rambling and… Had lost it all in the end… I still, for a long time…” She looked back at Kaden, laughing slightly at the foolishness of her words “I believed it.”

“Sounds like he was an old man that was dying that didn’t want to die with the blame himself so he was passing it off onto someone else..” He sighs some as he looked at her, “I know that may sound fucked up or whatever. But I..You, We both know that you’re a great person. I know you, I know what’s inside of this..” He points to her heart. “I know you...NOTHING is your fault. I don’t care if it was your Grandfather or not..”

He pulls her close as he leans down into her pressing his lips softly against hers, he pulled away slowly looking into her eyes. “Anyone that knows you..should know this..” She pulls him back to her, kissing him intently as her hands clasp at the back of his neck, drawing him closer to her still as the kiss lingers for a moment before she breaks away, staring up into his eyes…

“I love you.” She smiles, tilting her head to the side slightly as she lets the warmth of her words replace the trembling in her fingers… “I love everything that you are and I just…” She sighs, with a smile this time, shaking her head a little.. “My only regret is not knowing you sooner..” She leans in closely again, kissing him a little softer this time, running her tongue across her bottom lip for a moment as the kiss ends…

“I was so, stupidly afraid for you to know - To see what I called home before the Gypsies and my Dad and all of that horribleness… There was already so much dark and cruel in my past that you accepted of me that…” she sighs, smiling again even wider now.. “And I should have known, that this wouldn’t be any different…” She leans in closer, resting her head against his chest, her cheek turned to him, as she slides her hands free and down to around his waist, tilting her head back just a little to look up at him from the embrace… “Thank you.”

He looks down as his hands fell to her waist wrapping his arms around her petite body as he pressed his body against hers. He leaned down towards her kissing the top of his head as his lips part her head he spoke, “You’re welcome babe..” He holds her close and tight as he looked down at her, “I accept your bad with your good. Any great relationship is based on this..and what we have is something not only great but special and wonderful..”

He just smiles as he looks down at her and smiles, “Is there anything else?” She peers up at him with a small smile, leaning into him a little more as she settles in his arm, she makes a soft, content noise. “For another day..” She half whispers the words as she closes her eyes, breathing in slowly and allowing his scent to fill her nose… “I want to focus on the right now…” She tightens her embrace a little more “And the very very very long, wonderful still to come.”
