Moving forward is always a better option than moving backward. It’s sometimes a scary experience to step into the dark, uncharted unknown. It’s even scarier when you ask someone you care about to do it and you have literally no control over what happens from there. But if you’re not moving forward...you’re not moving at all… “Hey, Eddie.” Adrien Cochrane greets his manager with a firm handshake as soon as Eddie Walker greets him at the front door of the manager’s Slidell home. Eddie: “Thank you for driving all the way out to St. Tammany Parish for this. Nair just went over the legal parts of the contract and has greenlit the contract. Did you bring the subject?” Adrien: “In the car and has no idea what’s going on. We’ll summon when the time is right.” Eddie: “Perfect. Builds the suspense a little bit.” “UNCLE ADRIEN!!” As soon as the little voice shouts his name, Adrien feels the source of the voice clinging to his left leg. Adrien: “Hey, Jack! Look how big you’re getting, dude! Are you on Christmas break from school?” Adrien crouches down a little bit to address the seven-year-old. Jack: “Yeah! So is Mommy!” Eddie’s wife, Skye, is a teacher at a nearby elementary school. Around mid-December, all of the schools close for Christmas break and don’t return until after New Years. Eddie: “She’s in the kitchen making everyone lunch, including you two. You’ll see her in a moment. Come to the office.” Adrien: “I’m on your six. It was good seeing you, Jack. I’ll see you in a few minutes, okay, dude?” The son of Eddie Walker smiles before running back towards his room. Adrien follows the forty-one-year-old into his office, where most of Adrien’s contract signings take place. But this particular contract isn’t for Adrien… Eddie: “Well here it is, big #FSociety logo on the top and everything. Rookie wages of course due to the lack of name recognition. Gotta earn the dollars in this business.” Adrien: “We both know how I started from the bottom and worked to where I am. Anyone learning from me should understand that’s how it works. That big house of mine didn’t happen overnight.” Eddie: “Not to mention my house...but that’s not the point. Of course, I would expect the first few matches to be tag team matches.” Adrien: “Of course. I saw the transaction wire. The perfect tag team partner is definitely on the roster now.” Eddie: “Think it will be weird with them, given the circumstances going on today?” Adrien: “Oh definitely. But it’s not like we really need to find an excuse for that to eventually be the case when it comes to these two. Speaking of which, it looks like our subject is coming inside. I guess it’s time to get this thing signed.” “What exactly is going on in here?” Both men immediately look in the doorway. Adam Sanders, impatient from sitting in Adrien’s car for the past few minutes, keeps looking back at Adrien followed by Eddie until either one of them gives him a proper response. Adam: “I thought you said I was going to be needed for this trip. If you two are just doing your regular business, I could have just played Mario Kart with Becky while you were gone.” Adrien: “Actually, this does involve you. Take a seat.” Adam’s eyes widen. He has no idea what’s going on, and his facial expression made that painfully obvious. He straightens up his jeans as he takes a seat across the desk from Eddie. Adrien walks to the side of the desk opposite Adam as well but remains standing. Eddie: “Sign this.” Eddie pushes the #FSociety contract in front of Adam, already turned to the page that requires his signature. Adrien hands him the very pen he signed his #FSociety contract with. Adam scans the page presented to him. Adam: “What is this?” Eddie: “What do you think it is?” Adam: “Some sort of agreement that I haven’t read the terms and conditions for yet.” Adrien: “Does anybody really read those?” Eddie: “I’m willing to bet Nair does. That’s why he gets to go through all the boring language in these to make sure there’s no bad legal stuff in here. Adam, you going to sign this thing or what? Skye’s lunch smells like it’s nearly done and I’m starving.” Adam: “You didn’t tell me what it is yet.” Eddie: “It’s your lifelong dream coming true. Well, your dream since I’ve met you, anyway.” Adrien: “Look at the logo on the front page, Adam.” Adam flips to the front of the contract and sees the #FSociety insignia on the top. His seat slides back a couple of inches once he realizes what’s going on. Adam: “You mean I…” Adrien: “Yup.” Adam: “I’m going to be…” Adrien: “Wrestling in the ring against other people. And being paid to do it. Not being paid much, though.” Eddie: “About as much as Adrien’s AWA salary was.” Adrien: “I was still in an apartment back then and had to do music gigs around town just to afford it.” Eddie: “But you will be paid more than Becky’s Big Apple Wrestling contract nonetheless.” Adrien: “I’ve been watching you grow since you first wanted to learn how to wrestle under me and I think you’re ready to see how you stack up against people who aren’t just training partners. Adam felt like he was having an out of body experience with all of this. He couldn’t believe he was finally getting an opportunity to compete in the same ring that Adrien does every two weeks. He was going to have an opportunity to win championships like his mentor has if he can do well enough. But that’s a big if… Adrien: “Adam, it took a while for me to really get on my feet in this industry. I didn’t win a title until after I had been wrestling for five years. But I learned from every match I had prior to that, whether I won or lost, and whether I made a great showing or not. But you gotta get out there to move forward in your career and I think this is a good starting point. Sign there and just worry about winning that first match.” Eddie: “One step at a time. And you know who just recently joined the roster as well, right?” Adam has a feeling he knew what name was about to be mentioned but he didn’t really want to hear it. Adrien: “Kenzie. I know things are...complicated with you and her but you guys would make a really good tag team with all the experience you two have wrestling together.” Eddie: “Both in the ring in proper attire and in the bedroom without any…” Adrien: “Eddie! Dude! Not cool!” Eddie: “What? He’s already feeling awkward about this already. That’s not going to make it any worse at this point.” On the heels of his unpleasant conversation in New York with Becky, Adrien decided that Eddie may need to hear some harsh truth. Adrien: “You really need to work on not saying some things out loud.” Adrien turns back to Adam for the moment though Eddie knows he’s not off the hook for his unfiltered banter with the people in Adrien’s life. Adrien: “I really think you should do this, Adam.” Adam grabs the pen and starts writing his full name. Smiles come across the faces of Adrien and Eddie as he finishes the final S in Sanders. Adrien: “Well Adam, you’re officially a professional wrestler. Welcome to #FSociety, buddy.” |
