[ See Long Trek North for previous segment.

After the trio left Xavier's School, the only home one of them had ever known and the closest thing to it for the other two, they traveled north per the plan. But being couped up in a truck with the same three people was hardly eventful. . .for the most part.]

Kaie screeched as she wheeled through the air over the cab of the truck. She'd needed some room to stretch out and use her muscles . . . And also a little space to herself. As much as that made her cringe to admit. And being. A shapeshifter had its uses. It allowed her to get out for short spans of time without irritating Logan. Her only usual regret was that she couldn't share the feeling with her boyfriend, and he had no way to do the same. But when she couldn't resist the urge anymore she put aside the small cringes and did it anyway. Usually as a bird since it was relatively easy for them to catch up to the truck. . . As long as Logan didn't drive super fast. Her hawks wings beat the air so she could gain altitude again before going into an easy glide. Sure it let the truck speed ahead for a moment but she was almost done. Space and excersize goals reached.

She pulled her wings in and dove, loving the feeling of the wind through her feathers as she plummeted like a fluffy missle towards the bed of the truck. It was a routine she had gotten rather good at during their drive. Land in the bed of the truck, work her way forward and tap on the glass of the back window to let the men know she was back. And that's just what she did, using her hooked beak to tap so she could look in and see if she could figure out what they had been up too while she was gone.

It had been a long couple of days. Logan had expected that it would take a while, and that it was going to feel long with two teenage kids stuck in a truck with him all the way to Canada. He didn't ever expect that he'd be betrayed by the elf the way he had, though. The energy drinks that had been turned over to Darren and Kaie had started a bout of loud singing, non-stop chattering, and all manners of excessive . . . noise.

Logan had been more than relieved when they'd run out and they'd quieted. Though with quiet came back a stuffy, stiff feeling . . . Uncomfortable, almost irritating. And Kaie's sudden absence didn't help much. He didn't need superhuman scent to sense how Darren got when it was just them. The fear was there, and while usually it would've been amusing, now it just got on Logan’s already frayed nerves. He began looking for somewhere to stop. Fokd, space, and a chance to stretch his legs.

Kaie's tap tap tap on the back window was a relief. Logan didn't even need to look around at Darren; he was already letting her in.

--------------------------

And rightly so. Kaie had been his only source of comfort and entertainment in theit trek and he appreciated her presence greatly. It was when she flew off that it got really bad. The silence stretched, he could feel Logan’s dislike . . . Whether it was actually for him, or for being stuck in a car with them, or both--- he didn't care. Either wouldn't lessen the uncomfortable feeling.

And if he wasn't thinking about the gigantic elephant in the truck, he was instead thinking about the home he'd left behind. He already missed it. He already missed everything about it. His room, his bed, the halls, his friends, the grounds. He was trying to avoid the thought of feeling regret, though. He didn't want to feel any kind of regret.

Darren had gone all the way up here to be with Kaie. So they didn't have to be separated. He couldn't regret that.

Her return was an absolute relief. He jerked open the window, ignoring a disapproving note from Logan, allowing her back in. "Logan says he's started to look for somewhere to stop for the night."

She hopped onto the window sill and clambered back into the back seat of the truck in a rather graceless manner compacred to her flight. The tension in the cab was so thick she doubted even the hawk's sharp could cut it and for a moment she contemplated going back outside to sit in the wind. It would be more comfortable at least...

But no. She couldn't do that to Darren again, for a little while, so she shifted back to her natural state then slid over to sit next to her poor neglected boyfriend so she could rest her head on his shoulder and entertained their touching arms so her hand rested him his lap. A bit of a snuggle and a kiss on his cheek were her way of apologizing to him as he spoke.

"I didn't see anything for a while" she answered back, though her gaze flicked up to meet Logan's in the rear view mirror.

"How much farther are we going? I only saw trees and occasionally the road for miles." Kaie reported. For the first time she was starting to wonder if Logan had a city in mind or if he was just going to keep driving till the truck broke down. her nose wrinkled instinctively at the thought. Her father might be fine roughing it in the wild, and building a cabin in the woods or wrestling a bear with his bare hands for fun.... but she required internet to survive.... internet, social interaction... and a store. Those were requirements for life.

Logan peered into the rearview mirror to look back at Kaie as she settled into the backseat and shifted into her human form once more. His eyes settled on the road again when she snuggled against her boyfriend. He planned on paying less attention and more on looking out for the next city, but instead was greeted by questions brought on by his daughter.

"Well," he started, readjusting his grip on the wheel, "not gonna lie, we still gotta while yet. But it ain't even half s' long as drivin' as yesterday. There's a town comin' up, little while out . . . It ain't big, but it'll be our last stop before we reach our final stop. It'll maybe be an hour or two of drivin' tomorrow. Tops."

He'd gotten them a cabin out somewhere by Fort Severn. It kind of mixed together what both sides would want . . . He got his remoteness, the terrain he felt the most secure in--- and she and her boyfriend got their . . . Internet, and . . . other shit. Stuff for studies, and the Skype. And they'd all need to be close to some kinda civilization, though it was more close to something he'd preferred rather than something they might've preferred. It wasn't a sprawling city. It had maybe one stoplight . . .

"Too late to drive now, though. We'd better stop at a motel in the first town. It's maybe ten minutes out."

-------------

Darren snuggled back against Kaie, resting his head over hers. He was too engrossed in having her back for a moment to really make sense out of the words that were going between Logan and Kaie, not until he heard 'an hour or two of driving, tops'.

Wait, what? He pulled himself out of his thoughts and looked between them. "Where are we heading . . . ?"

Oh. They were going to a hotel? "That actually sounds like a good idea."

Soft beds. Warm towels. . . . Space. Space sounded awesome. And maybe heat. Actual heat. But mostly just time for himself and Kaie and somewhere nice to stretch their legs rather than being trapped in a truck.

Kaietlyn sighed at Logan's answer. She was very certain that if she never took another road trip in her life it would be too soon. But it wouldn't do for griping really, though the relative high spirits from her flight faded into a sort of accepted disappointment. The red head snuggled a little closer to her boyfriend and was quiet for a while as her gaze drifted out the window over him.

As far as she cared they had come far enough as soon as they had crossed the border but the ten minutes passed quickly enough, and she had snuggled quiet comfortably against her lover. Though she was ready to stretch her legs again and maybe get some real food from a real restaurant. . . or other such luxuries as a long trip could have. Lazily her mind drifted to try and contemplate ways to ease Darren and Logan's discomfort. . . and her own if she was totally honest, for the last day. But she couldn't think of any overlapping interest that would make for good conversations in the time that she had had.

Though if she got really desperate she decided she would just ask them both for a story or some sort. . . Maybe some good memory from their past. She could share one of her own. Like the one time in early elementary when her best friend told a boy to kiss her because she liked him, a memory that made her smile. Or the time when she and her mom had just moved to New York and went to a breakfast diner to celebrate the last unpacked box from their move. And they hadn't even had kippers. That one made her giggle. Yeah. she would tell that one. Maybe she could even get a smile out of her father for it.

Even though things were okayish- mostly- between them he was still a rather morose grump. his personality did have the happy side effect of her extra appreciation for Darren's. and how he could find cheer in almost anything. And if they had their own hotel room. . . Her grin turned a little impish and she gave his fingers a small squeeze and ran her thumb over the back of his hand, admiring it wordlessly as she looked back to the window and tried to spot where they would be stopping.

Logan looked off to the left as their time was beginning to run out. The hotel in question wasn't that far off. He remembered it well enough. It should have been coming up right . . . Right about . . . Ahh. It appeared a little further down than he'd thought but Logan spotted it just a little over his estimate. It was a building conjoined with a small village-like cluster of other buildings, made around one stoplight, but it was still a good stop for one last branch of journey.

Logan looked over his shoulder after turning in, gesturing to the [WIP]
