Refusing to believe her story about cave-dwelling monsters, the sole survivor of a spelunking exploration gone horribly wrong is forced to follow the authorities back into the caves where something awaits.

I saw this movie a few times and I was honestly bored with it. It doesn't even hold a crumb to the original (new saying?) and it was pretty bad in every departement minus the gory scenes which were actually pretty nasty. I have it on DVD though and I've only seen it two or three times. I don't think it's awful, but it's a very bad sequel to a fantastic and disturbing movie.

3/10

This is the real, OFFICIAL forum we moved to. No trolls, no drama, plenty of horror discussions.

Yeah this was definitely not what I wanted it to be, haha. It had a few great characters, a nice resolution to the Juno/Sarah plot, and some decent deaths, but the creatures were shown way too often, the ending was stupid as fuck and made Sarah's sacrifice pointless, the shit pit pales in comparison to the original film's blood lake, it was VERY suspenseful at times, but despite what the review quote on the back of the DVD case said, it failed to recapture the lightning in a bottle of the first film. I don't hate it but I don't love it either and I hardly even like it. I'd rather watch the making of the original film than watch this again tbh. 5/10

I actually thought the resolution to the Juno/Sarah plot was AWFUL! Especially considering how excellently the first film handled it.

As said, this film never happened IMO. It is an un-film

I liked that Juno ended up dying, with Sarah eventually sacrificing herself to save someone else. That ended up being totally ruined though...stupid old man with a shovel. Seriously, wtf?

Juno's death in Part 1 was FAR better and more fitting with Sarah leaving her to die. Not to mention Sarah's own descent into madness and acceptance of her fate is far more chilling and effective than the stupid sacrifice in Part 2.

I hate this film. I truly hate this film. It's one of the worst I have ever seen for reasons I'll detail below-

1. The fucking title. "The Descent 2." It misses EVERYTHING that made the original title work and turned it into "Random Horror Series Installment No. 2." Yeah, on FACE VALUE they remain the same. No surprise there. Group of people go into a cave. It's missing the soul behind the title though. The Descent (original's) title ISN'T meant to be taken literally! It's not JUST about the girls descending into a cave. It's about the descent into madness and despair, particularly of Sarah. She's on edge as is, and by the end of the film she has TRULY lost her mind. That's actually an alternate interpretation of the original. That there were no monsters. The deaths of the girls from the monsters? All in Sarah's mind. She snapped under the pressure of maybe never getting out of the cave alive, killed everyone else, then accepted her demise. Not my interpretation, but a good one. There's nothing like that in the sequel. It's skin deep whereas the title and plot of the original work on different levels.

2. They ignore the Director's cut ending. They go for the tacky, American only ending (and even then, American R-rated only ending) WTF? Do you know how many people who live in foreign countries/only saw unrated that you'll confuse?

3. The hopelessness is gone. I NEVER felt truly hopeless in Descent 2. It was just "Mk gonna just wait." One ofthe STRONGEST aspects of the original is that desperate bit of hope for another exit set against the doubt we all had that no, there really is no other way out. It was amazing and the sequel.. Just doesn't have it. And not only that, but the original had the layer that NO ONE knew where these girls were. It's incredibly likely they'd never be found. The characters in 2? LolEveryonesKnewWhwre

4. The cause of the cave in. There's no one to truly BLAME in the original. It just happened because a girl was unfortunate enough to get stuck. Now we have a loathsome, dumbass Sheriff causing deaths.
EEEW.

5. The characters. NONE of the new ones come close to being as good as the original ones. The Sheriff was just awful. Why the FUCK do we have a character to root for to die? That's not what The Descent is for! Would The Descent (original) have worked if Beth was an idiotic, self-serving bitch who was ready to fuck everyone over at any moment? Nope. Alongside this, we have Cath and her incredibly talent to act like a moron and cause deaths of others. Thanks Cath, glad you killed off one of the 2 likeable new characters. Poor Greg :(

6. The spotlighting of the monsters. They're clearly put on display for the world to see. No shadows or anything. It doesn't even have a scene that's CLOSE to being as suspenseful as the seemingly bottomless pit Juno crosses in the original. The monsters are meant to COMPLIMENT the rest of the film. They are not strong enough to be the main fucking focus.

7. Juno's send off reeks of disgustingness. So undignified. Sarah's is good if we don't count the alternate ending, but pales in comparison to the birthday cake end of the original.

8. Those last. 90. Seconds. What the fuck?

I'm sure there's more I forgot about as well. The main point is that they made a shallow, scareless, suspenseless sequel to a deep, intense, shocking film and threw in some dumb characters you're rooting for to die. At the very least have then magically learn where the girls REALLY went and have it just be the rescue squad. Don't RUIN the original's ending too!

I actually love this 8/10. But that lame shock ending sucked. The producers were trolling.
