The biggest discrimination I face is something that I guessed I never thought I would: ageism. I've been on any number of interviews in the past and been told the reason I didn't get the job was that the company was looking for someone "more vibrant', "more able to relate to our market base", "more in tune with our customers". Push further, and the truth comes out...... someone younger. It's an issue I pray most of you never have to face, but I bet some of you have faced it and not even known about it. Have you ever felt like adults around you didn't respect your opinion because of how young you are? You've faced ageism. It's more prevalent than we care to admit. My views on race have changed a lot over the years. When I was little, my Grandpa used to listen to Cardinals baseball on the radio, and when Lou Brock would steal a base, he'd say, "That n***** sure can run. All them n****** are like that." I grew up thinking that blacks were different than me, superior in some ways, inferior in many ways. it took me years for my attitude to come around and realize just how terrible a person I had been to think those things, and just how much I needed to change to remove those thoughts from my mind and my actions. I've come a long way, and it can still be a struggle sometimes to remember that Grandad's views are not the way to think. I pray you never think like my Granddad did. |

I've seen a lot of homophobia, mainly from my school. My two closest friends are girls, and they are dating. They have never made out at school like almost every other couple does, and all they really do is hold hands and hug. Yet they keep getting horrible looks, and at times get called flat out DISGUSTING simply because they are holding hands. I don't see this happening when other couples full on MAKE OUT in the middle of the hallway and block your way. No. That is called adorable. But if it was my two friends, or any other gay couple doing that, they probably would of gotten yelled at. |

Our world has enough problems yet the human race is bent on destroying itself. I think everyone here and in the world (those of a conscious age) have dealt with or been exposed to some form or sexism ageism, racism, or homophobia. It's a sad, but true fact. I wish there was a way to end this, but unfortunately it's imbued into our society. I can't say much for other countries because I'm an American citizen who has never left the country, but I can only imagine it's the same everywhere else. Like Kibby, my father's family is quite racist and backwoods. (At least my uncles and grandfather is) While my mother, who was fostered by an African-American family has always spoke openly about equality and understanding. Even at a young age I could tell that what my dad's family believed was wrong and hateful, tis why I have nothing to do with them. We're all the same, yeah we may look or act differently but we're all the same inside. We all live, breathe, love, and die. I just cannot fathom how people believe that being a different color, race, gender, or sexuality is wrong or degrading. But these days is just a casual conversation piece to throw out words like (Faggot, Nigger, Spic, Chink, Dyke) like it's nothing at all. Then you have phrases like "Damn Mike, you throw like a girl/pussy. What's wrong with you?" Really? Is this phrase really necessary? I'm hearing eight year-olds say shit like this now. Words and phrases like these are why we cannot destroy this hate. We need to eradicate these words, because as long as they're around so will the discrimination. What I do know is that you can't change the past but the future is ours. When you hear someone call your friend or anyone for that matter, a Queer, Dyke, etc. take a stance. No you don't have to be physical, but stand up for them. Let them know that you support them and you're there. Don't turn a blind eye and walk away. Hate spreads like wildfire, so be the water to put it out. All we have is each other so spread the love and voice your opinion. I know it may seem futile at times, but there is always someone listening or taking your words to heart. If you take anything from this little rant of mine, please..please..please teach your children differently. Let them know it's okay if a boy's favorite color is pink or if a girl wants to play football. It's okay if your Caucasian daughter wants to date someone with a different ethnicity or someone who is the same sex. Teach them to avoid words with derogatory meanings or phrases that lessen a different group of people. Talk to them and tell them about love and understanding. We might not be able to change it now, but I can only hope that future generations learn from our past mistakes and act differently. Edited by degausser12, Feb 4 2013, 11:31 PM.
