The Boy Scouts of America are voting on whether to allow gays into scouting for the first time in the 100+ history of the Scouting movement. They are feeling pressure from those who want them to allow gays, and those who are strongly against it.

Nobody debates the fact that Scouting is like any other group, club or organization, and can set its own rules, unless it receives federal funding, in which case then it is subject to federal rules about discrimination and the like. The Scouts get no federal funds, so they are free to do as they see fit. The question is: SHOULD they allow gays?

Your thoughts?

Finally they're trying to move away from their anti-gay policies. Keep in mind that they also discriminate against the rest of the LGBT community and atheists. One's faith or sexual orientation shouldn't hinder them being in or not being part of the Scouts.

This.

I was in the organization until Webelos II and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was lucky and my scout leader was a really open-minded guy who avoided any religious/touchy topics.

The whole basis of scouts is to be a better person and help your community, if someone is gay/atheist and wants to contribute then why should their orientation/religion come into question?

The decision on whether or not to allow gays into scouting was delayed until May. The Scouts said they want "input from more troops".

Mormon Scout Masters immediately praised the decision, saying the pressure they are exerting on the decision-makers of the Scouting Council is working.
