I think I'm in the minority on this board when I say I don't like this movie. There are a few great scenes, but I'm just not a fan. I did appreciate that it was grittier than the remake, which I pretty much detest. |

It just boils down to my taste in films. It's a good movie, I just don't like it. I liked it the first times watched it when it first came out, but my tastes have changed considerably since then and I just don't find it appealing anymore. However, this movie did what the remake should have done, made a terrifying, gritty movie that appeals to modern sensibilities while still being retro. |

I LOVE that this one took the time to really set up characters we could care about and root for <3 |

Why are you shocked? Just curious. Different cinematography, different director, different writer and entirely different characters. It follows the same old plot but it's not a carbon copy of the remake so it shouldn't be that shocking haha. Having of recently rewatched the original my outlook on this film changed a lot. The Hewitts are pretty damn boring, I'll take the Sawyers any day thanks. Not to mention every remake of a classic's problem, humanizing PSYCHOPATHIC killers and making the audience feel a certain degree of sympathy for them. Thankfully all of the characters were likable especially the sexy as hell Bailey so we weren't in the position to root for the villain. Ah Diora... (wuv) Biel tops Brewster, I thought Brewster's character was lacking the brothers and Bailey were much better. Loved Bailey's chase/almost escape scene. A lot of good scenes in this. I'd rate it slightly below the remake. VERY slighlt under the remake but still doesn't come close to the sheer disturbingness of the original masterpiece. DINC- |

Many folks forget that the original, aside from the chainsaw chase and the dinner table scene onward, was gritty and sick but had lulls of intensity. Now, of course the original made up for that with the wildest dinner table scene of them all, IMHO, but TCM: TB could have even ramped up the intensity even more with regards to Bailey.
