Maybe that is why they don't talk about their religion, and act like are just four women married to one man. |

http://news.yahoo.com/reality-tv-family-wont-face-bigamy-charges-utah-051634510.html About their court case with Utah. Utah was never going to prosecute, the LAST thing the Church wanted while they have a candidate for President is to have Polygamy in the news, they just successfully scared them away. Utah doesn't even call it "polygamy" in their laws, they call it "bigamy" and have a special phrase to cover the polygamist past. It's basically, "or anyone who SAYS they are married." They don't want even the word "polygamy" in their laws. I think Cody wants to be Bill from Big Love, some hero-type bringing this into the light. Hence the separate houses in suburbia for the wives now. He is such a joke. |

Just out of curiosity, Mariah, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but are you still practicing? (Mormonism not polygamy!) |

No. I gave it up when I found out black people couldn't hold the priesthood (still paying for Cain's sins, their skin was the mark of Cain) and neither could girls. I just couldn't imagine the God would care about skin color or lack of a penis, especially when God was choosing a prophet. I was 12. It was very traumatic, as the Church was a huge and comforting stability point in my somewhat chaotic life. My logical mind just couldn't believe that God would make a mistake that big, so if that was wrong, the rest must be wrong as well. I was 12, and had only met one black person in my life at that point. South Pacific (the movie) had made a huge impression on me when I was little though. It's messages about racism felt true to me, and right. Polygamy was explained to us in a completely bullshit way in Church. "Not enough men to go around because so many were murdered, the extra wives would have starved all alone in the world, they were mostly widows or orphans." It wasn't until Big Love came on and I found a long story in my mother's papers about polygamy (fictional characters, but the real deal) that I began investigating polygamy, which lead to The Mountain Meadows Massacre, and other history. So, for about two years I immersed myself in a clear-eyed look of the Church, through books, the web, and also genealogy of my family. I can't tell you how pleased I was when I found out that my 5 X great grandfather had tried to stop the Mountain Meadows Massacre, risking his own life to do so. (Mormons who talked about it, or opposed it were usually killed.) No one dared try to kill him, he was a tough old coot. John D Lee did try to kill his son, my 4 X Gr grandfather, but (I found this from various diary entries) he was expecting it, and when asked out for a buggy ride, was packing. JDL backed down. That Gr Grandfather called in sick. Between the two of them though, (my grandpa and his son) they talked most of the Indians out of participating, which is why it was mostly Mormons dressed as Indians who killed (butchered) all of the people on that wagon train, and stole their stuff. They both spoke all of the Indian languages of the area (several tribes and dialects.) So, more than you asked? Ha. It all started by trying to find out how these women felt (which is what my mom's story was about) sharing a husband. The modern day stories that have been published show that it's a mess and horrible for them. The man rules all. They disobey? No heaven for you. There is jealousy and favoritism, and it's incredibly difficult emotionally for the women. The ONLY reason they stay is that the "believe" in D & C 132, http://www.utlm.org/onlineresources/section132.htm Joseph Smith's revelation when his first and legal wife found out Joseph was "spiritually marrying" a bunch of hot young girls, and also a few friend's wives. He sent the friends off on "missions" far away, usually dangerous, if he felt the urge to marry one of them. Many mormons were not polygamists, many didn't believe in that, many wives wouldn't stand for it, and most were very poor and couldn't afford it. The bigger the shot in the Church though? The more wives they had. Oh, and it continued after 1890. Also, most of the European converts were not told about polygamy and were shocked when they finally arrived (most were the handcart pioneers, poorest of the poor) they were stuck. Huge country, no way out, so they made the best of things but never practiced polygamy. In a way, I side with the polygamists who, at great cost, kept to the commandments of Joseph. Abolishing polygamy was a political and economic move (war with the US, the threat of seizing all Church assets, and the Church owned EVERYTHING.) So they had a "revelation." Most current day polygamists (fundamentalists) are descended from the early pioneers that rejected that convenient revelation, and felt Church leaders were going against their scriptures. If you are going to believe, you have to believe it all. Also, many of those people couldn't bear turning their wives and children out. For one thing, they couldn't AFFORD to set them up in houses (unless they were very wealthy church leaders, the only ones who had money.) So that would have been letting their wives and kids starve and be without houses in the harsh Utah climate. BTW, D&C 132 has never been taken off the books. Current day Mormons (some know, most don't) still believe that D&C 132 will be restored in heaven. So, men will have many wives on their planet, and the women will be endlessly pregnant, giving birth to spirit babies to be born to the faithful on earth. Edited by Mariah, Jun 1 2012, 04:38 PM.

Very interesting, Mariah! Hats off to you for taking a stand at 12... that is really young to break away from family beliefs that have been held for generations. I always thought it was "interesting" that Joseph Smith got the "revelation" about multiple wives when his wife found out about his wandering eye. I am kind of a nerd, and like to read about all different kinds of religion. Also, I'm a genealogy nerd and have traced my family quite far back. It's interesting what you find, and while you can be proud of them, they also did things that aren't considered honorable or PC now. (Founded towns in NEngland YAY! Killed the natives... not so proud of that. Therefore I feel when I make "donations" in the tribe run casinos, I am "making atonement" for some of the sins of my ancestors. ) I'm sure that others here, along with myself are fascinated with your story. I never cease to be amazed at the variety of stories here among us. Thanks for sharing! |

It's why I feel TLC is making a strange show here. In all of my reading, I rarely found a "happy" plural wife, at least not in this religion. Past, present, or future. They are supposed to "keep sweet" and defer to the husband, and there are many tales of absolute heartbreak as well. On the other hand, without the boot of a church forcing women to do this or not get to the highest kingdom, I would have NO problem with multiple married people living together. I just read Jewel of Medina (another I picked up at the dollar store having not much idea what it was about.) It was pretty good. About Mohammed and the creation of Islam, told from the point of view of one of his wives, married at 6, moved in at 9, consummation at 14 (though he tried at 9, he didn't force her.) It's fictional/historical, and the wives HATED each other, and were constantly jockeying for position. Did Mohammed remind me of Joseph? BIGTIME! LOL Edited by Mariah, Jun 1 2012, 06:25 PM.

The whole gym idea. I don't know if that is a good endeavor. I mean, really. If I want to join a gym, I would hope the person who owns it wouldn't be overweight. And I'm not talking just a little overweight, but morbidly obese. I feel like that is not a good selling point. I do like the idea of a gym where "normal" ppl can go to lose weight b/c those Bally's commercials scare the crap out of me - I feel like to join Ballys, you need to get in shape first and then join - so I can appreciate the normal gym idea. But still. And she is losing weight (allegedly), so she is to be commended for that. I am just saying if I go into a gym and the owner comes lumbering at me looking like Janelle, I may rethink my decision.. |

LOL...at the thought of Janelle lumbering over to a new customer. But I lost 18 inches! Isn't the name of the gym something related to their religion, too? And do they honestly think they'll get 1000 paying members? That seems like a lot. |

Right! I mean is Janelle came up to me and said, "Let me show you how to do this." I would probably run. Maybe she needs to lose afew more inches before the gym comes to life. 1000 members is alot, and a new religious gym with them running it - don't think so. |

So this was back on last night, and I watched about 30 mins. Apparently, they split the finances equally, which means that Meri, who has only one child, gets the same amount of monthly allowance as Christine who has lord knows how many kids. I thought that was beyond ridiculous, and, of course, Meri comes on all teary eyed, saying how if she could, she would fill all the empty rooms in her huge house with kids if she could. Come on. This, obviously, is one of the reasons, why they are scraping the bottom of the barrel regarding finances. And, apparently next week they vacation with another polygamous family who has three wives, and the creepy husband is pda-ing all of his wives. Oh, and let's not forget Robin who goes to the lawyer and asks that her credit score jump (probably) hundreds of points in two weeks. Yeah, I'm not sure that's the way it works. And she also said that as part of her divorce she decided to take on some of the debt. How brave of her. I remember reading that she had thousands of dollars on a Victoria's Secret credit card. Yes, I'm sure her husband racked that up all by himself. The only one I'm really rooting for is Janelle. I hope she does just run away. Christine lost me when she started bitching about doing actual finances, as if writing a check was just so taxing. Edited by oleander, Nov 26 2012, 05:28 PM.

Oleander was it a new episode or a repeat of an old one? I think Janelle is ready to bolt. Her kids seem like they are willing to explore normalness. Christine's daughter seems totally brainwashed. Victoria Secret debt? Lol. Modesty at all cost! |
